Huh, I didn't expect the Hat boiks riffing about boners and foreskin to teach me the word "skiffle" today, but here we are. In all the parts of the US I've been, we'd just call that a "tub bass". I've had the pleasure of hearing them played many times, including one especially memorable occasion (somewhat surprisingly considering the quantity of moonshine involved) when we joined up with a motorcycle club playing bluegrass in the parking lot of a motel in West Virginia around 1am. We had a real blast.
