the red bugs are a super common harvest in latin america. They're actually a pest that kill the cactus. They're very pale to look at, but you can crush them in between your fingers and the colour is really strong. The indigenous peoples there have used it in their clothing for... a loooong time!

Yup! And they're still used today. Using them as a natural dye is incredibly easy and has beautiful results. I've used it for dying fabric before and it was by far my favorite natural dye to use. It produces beatific shades of pinks and purples depending on mordants used.
