The turning point for AJ was the Klitchko fight. It was a fight that he won but it changed him. He fought timid after that as he didn't want to feel a big shot again. Punch resistance isn't really something you can train for. Its something you either have or you don't have.

The most telling thing he said is AJ needs to go and be around more fighters in the gym and have more competition. He's never had that. It's always a comfy setting where everyone around him swoons over him. He needs to train in the US.

Agreed. He doesn’t need to train in the US because they are better fighters but rather because he is scared to do it. He needs to face some adversity in his training. He has so much he can literally take away everything and make himself battle hardened again and it won’t effect him monetarily…if he was a real fighter that’s what he would do. Stop coddling himself like a toddler.

People just accept that no matter what trainer AJ in had in his corner or amount of confidence booster fights, or therapy sessions he would never beat usyk. His only chance of ever beating Usyk if he gets into his mid 40's ,is washed up and loses all punch resistance. Or if AJ waits for his son Mikhail Usyk to grow up and start boxing and fight him as soon as he gets into college. Time to stop blaming trainers, ''haters''' 'the 'pressure'' ''the wrong game plan'' ''confidence issues'' and accept AJ is just mediocre euro level fighter and was and never will be on the level of Lewis or Mike Tyson. Lewis lost to guys by one punch by hit hard punchers who were in shape, not beaten to a beaten by a guy who feasted on snickers to train. It doesn't matter who would have trained AJ, you can't blame Robert Garcia for his loss he did what he could working with a limited fighter who is afraid of getting hit after Ruiz broke him in. If it wasn't Ruiz it would have been someone else. You can't train a poor gas tank, you can't train a lack of heart, this isn't the wizard of the oz and you can't train a dodgy chin. Elite level guys either have a rechargeable battery gas tank, heart, or special equaliser such as skills/ring iq or insane power or all those ingridients. Aj does not posses any of them Before Robert took the paycheck, he went on record, admitting AJ can't be fixed. He did his damnedest trying to correct ingrained bad habits that were programmed into AJ but he only wanted to be praised for the things he was doing right. There's unspoken rule inside ABJ's gym where no one is allowed to criticise him. he's accustomed to having cheerleaders around him to build up his confidence. Thats the reason why his trainers are inclined to kept telling him he's winning fights he's losing, and giving motivational speeches instead of telling how much of a limited one dimensional still fighter he is, due to AJs attitude. And that's why Angel Fernandez is still around, a guy with no credentials besides completing a personal trainer course with ineffective gimmick work outs that impress low IQ meatheads. One thing you can't take away from Fernandez, is that he is a p4p hall of fame cheerleader. What AJ needed was someone like Mickey Goldmill or teddy atlas and sit his ass down and give him that 'you got civilised'' speech from rocky 3 to remind him all the opponents he ran through early on in his career were more or less handpicked carefully selected by Matchroom which were tailor made for his style and let him know he will never be a champ again.

Beating 2 paper champions with a combined total of 0 defences to their name, doesn't make you a real champion. Charles Martin, Breazealle, Molina, Takum, Cornish, a one armed Dillian Whyte, a wlad that didn't train for 2 years after losing to Fury, a washed up 40 year old Povetkin, and washed up Pulev is not some great resume to shout home about. I personally don't think AJ ever believed his own hype, I actually wonder if AJ has always lacked in self confidence and its just taken until now to show. He's never been particularly charismatic and I always got the sense he was hiding who he truly was and some fighters do that in different ways but with AJ I just wonder if he was mentally compartmentalising himself from what was going on, all this underdog stay humble nonsense, I saw it as a way to take pressure off himself and to devalue himself so he didn't feel like he had perform as well. AJ should have had his first title fight in late 2019 early 2020.

People are over complicating things. Even at his best he cant beat usyk. Every fighter has one or two boogeymen who would beat them the majority of the time. Good management avoids the fighters from that scenario. I believe in reverse psychology in getting the best out of people especially weak minded people. When i was young my old man hated weakness. He saw it as an embarassment for a man to have this. When i was at school i was always fighting as we all do. When i got battered i would come home dejected turning up at the doorstep like a man whos spunked all his money in the bookies. My dad would get the belt out and tell me go back 2 moro and settle it. If u dont make sure you dont come back in my house. It would get me mad to the point that i wanted to kill my dad and bury him in suburbia, but it worked and now as an older man i respect what he did. Imagine my dad said dnt worry son ill take care of it or he said take a break from school for a day or two. I would have turned into a soft ass punk. Aj needs the harsh truth.

I caught that same demeanor when I was hearing Robert Garcia's interviews. Didn't sound really confident, sounded like it depended on AJ. I think any trainer would have a similar response because clearly AJ has some issues that have nothing to do with who his trainer is. I know no trainer is training their fighter to just stand in the ring and not throw his or her hands. So that has to be something the fighter is seeing or feeling once they get in the ring. The couple of times that AJ was really throwing his hands, Usyk could only cover up because it was too much. So I questioned why AJ didn't do that more. I don't know if it's confidence or his gas tank, but Garcia obviously saw something and didn't want to throw his fighter under the bus in these interviews

There's absolutely NO chance AJ will be allowed to come back against Journeymen. DAZN won't let that happen with the deal he signed and the money he commands won't allow it to happen. Using Lewis is a false equivalent because at that time he wasn't the main man in the division and wasn't making the same kinda money so it was easier to step down the levels for the rebuild. The psychological decline of Anthony Joshua also highlights how he's been viewed by (Re)Matchroom from the beginning - a marketing dream up there with Jordan, Beckham, Tiger Woods etc. Joshua was a wider project and this is a massive factor people seem to overlook when evaluating his career. It all has that ( obviously I dont know but...) tone of "You know how much this is worth Anthony??" but when the payday started meaning less, what can it actually mean to him? You've got him surrounded and managed by people who it meant everything, which is tragic since Anthony Joshua is actually a human being, let's not forget that. It goes beyond saying he's the cash cow. Theres a few who need to look themselves in the mirror and Anthony Joshua isn't actually one of them

As for Hearn, it's clear that he wanted AJ right in there again because he had a dream of promoting an undisputed fight and cashing in that big dough but in the process he has damaged AJ further and now he is trying to milk the man and not really caring about the boys mental health. I believe that AJ chose the wrong trainers in garcia, garcia is a tremendous trainer but I don't believe he fits AJ's style as a fighter. Sugar Hill would've been perfect for him and had AJ listened to Lennox in the first place when Lennox suggested a change in trainer. He could've had him in his corner before fury got him and things could be looking very different today.

A well-structured analysis that's pregnant will a lot of truth and food for thought. However, I draw the line in terms of retaining Robert Garcia. AJ should get rid of him forthwith. The strategy you laid out to build back AJ's confidence makes a lot of sense, and it has to be done in a step-by-step way. I have always said that Joshua should bury the hatchet and take on Lennox Lewis who is experience and has learned so much from the late Emanuel "Manny" Steward. AJ should take a leaf out of Wilder's book and take on a few no-hopers but don't specialize in them as he has. Joshua is capable but he must be prepared to listen and co-operate with his new trainer which will give believability and confidence and enhance his competitiveness to be champion again.

I was gutted after the Lionel Butler fight, I thought Lewis was finished. But by the time he beat Morrison who was WBO champion 2 years previous, I could see the confidence coming back into his game. This period was crucial to his future success and should serve as a lesson of how to rehabilitate fighters after crushing defeats

I also agree with what Teddy atlas said. When you are a fighter and get money you need to find something else to motivate you other than money. AJ secured the bag a long time ago. I agree that AJ hasn't got the right mindset and lacks the self belief and confidence to fully realise his full potential, but the issue is I don't think AJ truly knows what he wants, he is too easily influenced by everyone else in his corner, including Eddie hearn who is probably just interested more so in the money. I feel AJ is young enough still? To improve on his skill set and mindset, yes he should take the time out to recuperate, recharge and most importantly go inwards to work on himself, either way I wish him the best for his career.

I think Joey Gamache is a decent trainer for AJ as he seems to improve every fighter he trains and give him 4-5 fights with AJ and a lot of his basic mistakes would get eradicated and he has the power and dedication to turn it around but there needs to be a slow steady rebuild.

AJ is such a natural talent that I’m halfway tempted to think he can come-back just thru talent alone…but he is beaten. He is defeated. He is scared. "...the fighters who go on to be the greatest and the most successful tend to be the ones who are tethering on the brink of delusion..."--- HatmanStrikesBack. Hmmnn, interesting, Mr.Psychologist. "Fighters" like who? Joe Louis? Jack Johnson? Muhammad Ali? Mike Tyson? Max Baer? George Foreman? Lennox Lewis? Wladimir Klitschko? Because all these fighters (minus Louis and Lewis) tasted more defeats than Anthony Joshua, even though Joshua reached the pinnacle of the Heavyweight division FASTER than all the afore mentioned names. So, no matter how great they thought themselves to be (according to you) ---in their “delusion of grandeur"--- they all tasted the canvas multiple times. What makes a man is not how many times he falls, but how many times he can pick himself up and achieve greatness again.

If García thinks they were on the verge of winning the fight in R9, he needs to replay it in slo-mo and watch more closely. I thought the same until I did that. Hardly any of AJ’s punches landed on target, Usyk slipped nearly all of them or took them on his glove. It looked good because Joshua was laying into him and Usyk unusually stayed in front of him against the ropes, and AJ probably deserved the round for his aggression, but he didn’t really put a dent in Usyk. In fact, watching it back, you could almost think it was a role-a-dope tactic, especially considering what followed immediately afterwards in round 10. And about that meltdown… actually I agree with Simon Jordan for once, I believe AJ’s bubble burst in that fight. The difference with Ruiz is that he knew he’d made an obvious mistake, that he was the better boxer, and knew exactly what to do in the rematch against a slow-footed opponent with short arms and no movement. In this case, it WAS the rematch, his career was at stake, there was no prospect of putting it right in a third fight, and even if there was, there was no obvious mistake to put right; after two defeats it had become clear that he had finally met his match.

If he can get his mental game situated -- stay with Robert Garcia who is going to give it to him straight. Could actually be the start of an exciting new chapter in AJ's career !! People forget that Lennox Lewis v Lionel Butler was a WBC final eliminator. Butler was the number 1 contender. He was coming off a winning streak of 17 straight KO’s. Including a 1 round KO of Tony Tubbs, who only the year before many felt got robbed v Riddick Bowe. Straight after the Butler loss he beat Bruce Seldon. Butler was considered to be an EXTREMELY dangerous threat to Lewis. Unfortunately he had substance abuse issues and wasn’t very disciplined. He showed up overweight v Lewis and only had three rounds in him. Lewis took him out in the 5th. Yes Lewis did look gunshy though. I saw the confidence returning in the Morrison fight. Especially in the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds. Lewis started showboating and started dominating Morrison on the inside. Then of course he had the confidence to go to war v Mercer. The McCall rematch completely restored him. It was unusual and bizarre but before McCall started behaving strangely, Lewis was hitting him with some great punches.
