Hatred in the Bible

What do we make of the apparent hatred in the Bible that is taught? In particular, is hatred in the Bible as found in the Gospels taught by Jesus really "hatred," or are we perhaps misreading the words of Jesus? Does the context lead to mean something else?
In this video, taken from the video series The Mass Readings Explained, Dr. Brant Pitre evaluates one of Jesus' hard sayings in Luke 14 where Jesus says that if one does not hate his father or mother, for example, he cannot be a disciple of Jesus. What did Jesus mean by this hatred? Are there parallels elsewhere in the Bible where we see alleged hatred in the Bible being spoken of that may shed light on what Jesus is talking about here, as well as the parallel story in another Gospel of this same event?
Check out this video where Dr. Pitre will shed light on what is often perceived to be a case of hatred in the Bible -- and even from the lips of Jesus -- but when read in the context of the canon of the Bible as whole (and even within Luke's gospel itself) can be properly understood.
Moreover, when understanding what Jesus is really saying when he asks us to "hate" family members, we discover the implications these demands have on the very identity of who he is.

The only possible fruit of His word is sin being planted into us; that is how it is clear-as-a-bell that it is *NOT* God speaking to us through the bible but the evil one, same with the Catechism at that. As the only possible way to take His words in this are to conclude that we've got to intend that all our neighbors wind up in Hell for all eternity if we are to hate our neighbors- and if He (Christ) said it, it has to be done- literally.

@@chissstardestroyer I don't know about your theory... that Bible is supposed to be from ...Satan? I give you that certainly there's unspeakable evils in the old testament that just cannot be accepted or explained for the better. God is telling the Israelites to destroy entire gentile cities, to steal their land and possessions, to kill everybody, not sparing any women or children. Now that is evil confirmed. The god of old testament tricks and deceives people, just like the god in the Qur'an. The All-mighty and All-knowing God shouldn't need to deceive anyone. Certainly not anyone of his own creations who's actions are known to him beforehand. The translation of Luke 14.26 seems to be wrong. In Finnish Bible, it says (translated): "If someone comes to me but is not ready to give up his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple." This is in perfect consistency with the following explanation in Luke 14:33: "In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have, cannot be my disciples."

@@attiylanen The old testament's wording is part of how we know the bible's false; in general therefore, *nothing* eternal is even remotely good, but the entire next life is inherently and completely evil; best odds, barring the immoral fruits: simply wall off the next life, live according to the Decalogue, but completely wall off any contact with eternity at all and you're best off. Due precisely to the wording of the old testament and the teachings of the apostles breeding evil in the hearts of men who're trying to abide by natural law and have completely walled off any contact with the evil one: the entire bible is basically to be considered forbidden for anyone trying to live a holy life, at all, ever. I'd not say that the bible is from the devil; rather, it is most definitely NOT God speaking through the bible, but the evil one in fact; for evil is the fruits of the bible, and it takes pride in the extreme to even consider reading it to begin with at that, ultimate hubris in the extreme is necessary to even *think* of reading that kind of a book of lies!

John Shelton how so? They were eating literal bread in the greater context of the writing. Also, how would that be a falsehood if the earliest church practiced this and explained this in ‘the Didache’ which was seen by many as a canonical book by many church fathers and the early church. Today it is just seen as a great historical work though on what the early church did and believed but the point still stands. Were the men taught by the 12 apostles heretics? The book was written and is dated to as early as 50AD an apostolic time and it’s called ‘The Twelve(Didache)’ it was likely written by the 12. It was like a church manual that established the priesthood and more.

Verse 33 is actually even stronger and encompasses family. It says you must renounce (reject, 'hate') all you have or you cannot be a disciple of Jesus. As a practical manner, however, hardly anyone pays any attention to this. It's always easy to rationalize it away by simply believing you would give all your good stuff away if need be. Catch is, there's just never any 'need be.'

I like your videos but I think that this is pretty straightforward. The issue is that is is a punch to the gut saying and people have a hard time tolerating it...you have to drop everything to be a true disciple. Remember, he also says, "whoever looks back while plowing is not fit for the kingdom of God". There are other examples; Lot's wife, let the dead bury their dead, etc. There is something to be said about the time period and context but the words haven't lost much of their power today. Most of us can't do it though.

I thought it was a kind of prophecy, an adumbration of what Jesus knew was to befall Him. Yes, various forms of a cross were used as symbols for ideas in other cultures prior to Christian use, Egypt for sure, and even in the yet-undiscovered New World, the indigenous people had a form of the cross, but the meaning assigned to it is unique to Christianity

Luke14 seems to distinguish the cost of discipleship from those that are saved. In other words you can be saved and still not be a disciple, a disciple it seems is someone who God has chosen specifically to understand him to a greater degree than other people do(Matthew16:17). The greater your knowledge of God the greater your hatred of evil is going to be amplified(2Peter2:8), and that includes the actions of those around you including family members. This also works both ways(Luke6:22-23, John15:18-25 etc etc). In that context it seems that it's possible to hate the actions of those around you, so that it may even be considered as having a certain kind hatred towards those people. That ofcourse doesn't mean that you still can't love them.

That was a good and needed teaching, though it would help to explain that this usage of hate meaning to 'love one more than another' was already an established hebrew idiom in the first century for cleaving close to your rabbi who was to guide you closer and closer to your God. As such, loving your rabbi was an act of loving and drawing closer to God as called for within the shema.

Dear Dr. Pitre, (or if any theologian who’s field is New testament see my post) I would really like to hear answers to my questions, I have some doubts. Please to consider that I don’t speak well english, if possibile use simple words so I can understand better. Thank you so much! 1. If we count that all evangelists were onley humans and they were facing objective truth through subjective lanses, (as we read in different view in the stories who saw an open tomb), why Luke couldn’t say it in own way, using his words to describe. 2. Matthew gave his version on story, so did Luke. How can we know if Jesus told that story once, ore more times? 3. If Jesus said it just once, and Luke has just written what he have heard, shouldn’t Matthew be more reliable source, since he listened what Jesus was saying? 4. If Matthew wasn’t onley Jesus’ disciple, but was also tax collector with whom Jesus spend evening talking to him before Matthew even understood, couldn’t Matthew’s understanding be better what was said? Although both of them agree that Jesus should be before of anyone, even family, Matthew makes much more sense to me, and here’s why; If Jesus was God, and God is Love that contains objective truth and objective morality, and those are embedded in all people, (all people have the sense for those) I understand if someone says (even family member) to kill a child for no reason (the sense deep in you is telling you that’s just wrong), you shouldn’t listen. If someone doesn’t listen the voice of objective truth and objective morality, but listen even family member to go against that sense, he can’t be the follower. Thanks for reply to anyone who find time and patience to explain!

It is a very difficult passage and taken literally seems outrageous. But I like Dr. Brant's explanation, it makes perfect sense if Jesus was God incarnate. I've also recently heard a Catholic priest say this was a call by Jesus for us to move from the imperfect and conflictual loves of this world, often based on material things, towards a higher spiritual love

I had paid up last year (worth it!) and if I recall, some extra content not shown in this video was about "not being tied to" earthly things (titles, relations, and so forth) when you're in the Church (part of Christ). _On second thought, that might have been the video about the rich man who had followed all the Law and the Prophets, but wouldn't sell all he had to follow Jesus._ (Still hope he changed his mind when the Church was started at Pentecost, with all the miracles and martyrdoms going on! But if he didn't, what is that to us?) You can't love earthly or carnal things. Stay focused on Jesus (seriously, as in read and meditate on Holy Writ), pray all the time (get that inner dialogue with the Holy Ghost going!), go and sin no more, ask for the virtues and gifts of the Holy Ghost BY NAME... we're just like "visitors" here, and we've got to keep that in mind. Sojourners. (It's not easy but ask for the Grace of Christ to accept the gifts, especially c. 2022). ✝

Problem is in the translation. Jesus pbuh is saying that your faith is not complete nor are you ready for trials and tribulations if you do not love me more than your father or mother. It's not about hating. As a Muslim we believe in Jesus pbuh as a messenger of God Almighty. So this is exactly what Prophet Muhammud pbuh told his followers and that is none of you are complete in belief if you do not love me more than even your own parents. This is to prepare the followers for the struggles ahead and keep their feet firm. This is not about not loving your parents, oits about having complete trust in God Almighty and his Messenger and no being swayed by emotions in matters of principles of belief.

Dr Pitre I like your quiet humility and sincerity unlike the foul mouthed pompous preachers on youtube ( yeah, empty vessels make the most noise.(lol). let me add too that Our Lord seemed to have good grasp on human psychology. the family bonds or blood ties are the greatest impediment for accepting new sets of beliefs, ideas, could be the reason he used extreme words to sear the relationships. Just like missionaries in non Christian world, Our Lord too was preaching to a non christian crowds and was met with skepticism , insults, verbal abuse and threats of physical harm. He was right, when he said this is an evil generation. Here am I, greater than Jonah, greater than Solomon and yet you'll don't believe me . Most them assumed due to His miracles that he was some prophet but not Jewish Messiah. the Jews still pining for.. and here we are in 21st century not even the little Jewish Messiah, if he ever appears, could have even come close to Our Lord's Triumphant achievements -- He subjugated the greatest Empire then without a shot being fired. and through this Empire, the western civilization still honors Our Lord - the civilization's true strength

I'll tell ye this, for while I deeply desire to pursue the moral perfection that should come out of His teachings; they are *poison* to me, so no, I shouldn't even try to *study* His ideas at all, but completely prohibit them from entering my mind, as the actual intent of sending my neighbors to Hell is the sole possible fruit of Him using the very word "hate" in His commands- as that's the inevitable fruit of His word choice... no being, no matter where they are, can correct this product of His teachings, nor would I ever ask for that correction... barring of course the deletion of the entire bible, as one cannot be morally sound if one omits or adds a single part of a character to a letter of its words, then the best option is to consider the only being speaking to man through the bible to be the devil., precisely due to the anti-holy fruits of the wording of the bible and of Sacred Tradition as well!

I HATE the way the Books of the Bible were so poorly translated. Language barriers have really misconstrued so much to where the original meaning is nearly lost. Thanks so much English. BTW, can I hate the English language too? Personally, I believe the writers of the NT were FAR from perfect.

God created humans in his image , male and female , and Matrimony between a male and female is a sacrament. Whereas other forms of civil unions are man made and won't serve any purpose other than momentous gratification of bodily , whimsical desires , that too won't give a lasting peace but will push a person to despair and void. Hence , anti gay is a normal stance as long as we don't hate them or try to harm them except willing for their return to Christ in Christian fraternity.

The speaker quoting scripture is not accurate, Jesus never said it was mandatory to hate! Your Father or Mother.. Jesus last words before crucifixion were behold your mother {meaning our Heavenly Mother Mary} who is the personification of the Holy Spirit... Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own household. John 19:27 Jesus came to save the lost and heal the broken... Matthew 19:12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. Jesus told us to keep the most essential of the first 10 commandments... Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Ex. 20:12.) Here we see Jesus when he said those who do not hate their father and their mother are not worthy to be my disciples, Jesus is saying those who hate God and his Spirit are who I've come to save and without these qualities cannot be my disciples because they are not in need of a teacher. And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your Father Matthew 23:9

I don't think Jesus said any of that. A truely loving "god" wouldn't care who you loved or hated and wouldn't care if you loved or hated the god and wouldn't require you to do anything. You missed the part where there is hatred on just about every page of the bible. Read the bible as a history/science textbook that has been changed via the game of telephone for 2000 years. It is easier to see it for what it is.

King Menahem of Israel destroyed Tiphsah (also called Tappuah) and the surrounding towns, killing all residents and ripping open pregnant women with the sword (2 Kings 15:16). Isaiah prophesied doom for Babylon, including the murder of unborn children: "They will have no pity on the fruit of the womb" (Isaiah 13:18). For worshiping idols, God declared that not one of his people would live, not a man, woman or child (not even babies in arms), again confuting assertions about the sanctity of life (Jeremiah 44:7-8). God will punish the Israelites by destroying their unborn children, who will die at birth, or perish in the womb, or never even be conceived (Hosea 9:10-16). For rebelling against God, Samaria's people will be killed, their babies will be dashed to death against the ground, and their pregnant women will be ripped open with a sword (Hosea 13:16). Jesus did not express any special concern for unborn children during the anticipated end times: "Woe to pregnant women and those who are nursing" (Matthew 24:19).

Our Lord and Savior has many names. Jesus is one of them. His Apostles called Him "my Lord and my God", but His mother didn't name Him "God"! What a silly thing to say.

False, he is a human being ... Period. 1 John 4:2 (GNT) 2 This is how you will be able to know whether it is God's Spirit: anyone who acknowledges *that Jesus Christ came as a human being* has the Spirit who comes from God.

Mental acrobatics..smh. "Hate is not hate. Jesus didn't mean what he said! He exaggerated! He used hyperbole!" Oh, come on! Why would God who's supposed to make even children understand him talk in such a hard to understand and missleading way? Certainly not! What if the word is remembered / translated wrong. In Finnish Bible, it says (translated): "If someone comes to me but is not ready to give up his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."

Jesus DID NOT TEACH ANYTHING. HE NEVER EXISTED. The gospels are ANONYMOUS, for the god freaks, that means NO ONE KNOWS WHO ACTUALLY WROTE THEM. What you think are the teachings of JC are MOST LIKELY the writings of Roman scribes who were directed by the Emperor Constantine to create a new religion for his Empire. STOP LYING.

There are a lot of contemporary sources that reference the early Church. I think it's great you're here on a Catholic channel, but if you're interested in truth you haven't found it yet. I'm talking about the surviving texts that were critical of the Christian movement, let alone the Church Fathers who, living as early as they did, never had any trouble with which texts were real nor who wrote them. We have a lot more evidence of Jesus' existence than we do of Pythagoras or Socrates, it is really not difficult to research the Roman and Judeo-Roman sourcez from the first century. Again, glad you're here and interested in what is real.
