On some of the films of vintage loco running. You see the fireman breaking up the large bits of coal, before loading it into the fire.

Hi Richard, thats what I'd recommend - using a number of the smaller sizes is the way to go in OO - Dave

Why don't you just dump the coal to the tender?

I want a true coal burning/propelled ho scale locomotive. I know it would require constant replenishing and be messy....but how cool would it be to have a true identical working scale replica of an old locomotive? Thats what i want. And if i get rich i will make it real.

I got a couple of lumps of coal just by cadging it from the guy who was shovelling some at a narrow gauge railway in Norfolk. Just ask.

how do you add steam
@martinpattison15674 жыл бұрын
You put some PVA on top of the foam and then sprinkled on some coal. I understand the coal will stick to the foam, but what about what was on top. A very small amount of diluted PVA? Martin. (Thailand)
@HattonsModelRailways4 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, if you wish you can use diluted PVA or Ballast Magic to held bond the top layer - I left it off in this instance to create just a single layer of coal on top of the foam - Dave

Sometimes there's no substitution for the real thing, and you can get a great effect with real coal in your locos - plus it adds an authentic aroma too - Dave

Dave you’re a very nice bloke but watching you coaling an engine is like watching a drunken man running around with a Ming vase... You have a slight tremor no doubt due to being live. There’s no reason putting in a false foam bottom it’s a tiny space just fill it up all the way through. Invariably engines were fueled with a mix of coal grades and sizes so using a mix is a good idea. I would always add diluted pva at the end or half will fall out when handling the loco at a later stage.

Thanks for the feedback - sometimes the closeup camera can get a little too close and pick up every move on a larger screen which magnifies any shaking or nudges. Using a mix is definitely recommended and our Hattons Constructor coal comes with slight variety of grades in each bottle to help achieve this effect.
