Hauling 6000 lbs with Tacoma....(Can it Handle it?)

I have a 2017 tacoma SR5 v6, 2 wheel drive. Installed a Tekonsha P3 electronic brake control, Curt 17601 weight distribution hitch with sway control and Sumo springs for the rear leafs. Have a 24 ft travel trailer with dry weight of 5,600 lbs. Towed about 1,500 miles on a road trip with elevations of up to 8,000 ft sometimes. Felt my truck getting a good workout sometimes but it was able to handle well. Very proud of it.

we have a 2017 TRD offroad 4x4 tacoma and we pull a 28' travel trailer. installed the e brake and use the weight distribution with sway control bar. probably at about 6200 pounds with our stuff and all, it pulls it very well with no issues. by the way, it is a 2019 jayco jayfeather 24rl at 28'5""..

We just pulled a Feather Light with our 2009 Tacoma..5000 lbs. ...used a Takonsha Brake contoller, sway bar etc. No issues except in Canada..start looking for fuel before 1/4 tank...drive slower and the fuel stops give you and your pasdengers frequent rest stops..perfect for 5 yo!

2019 Tacoma TRD Offroad (manual transmission) here that's been towing a 16ft GeoPro 15TB and fully loaded probably around 4,000lbs. We utilize a weight distribution hitch, trailer brakes, Supersprings and an Overland Torque Tune and there's no way I'd tow anything bigger. Love the truck but it's just barely adequate to tow anything. We average after several thousand miles of towing about 12mpg. The OTT is by far the best thing to improve the towing experience. I'm glad to hear you say can but should you? I get it on individual choice for sure. If I knew I'd be towing our TT as much as we do, I would have bought the Tundra. I have a TRD sport too, well a 2wd. I have 285' tires on 17" wheels, tuned for 91 octanes, and re-geared to 5.29. That said when I tow an Auto detailer trailer of about 1300lbs I get from 19-22mpg. The tuning and gears really Help your performance in take-offs, tow capability, and mpg. I recommend it. I do plan in purchasing a travel trailer but was looking for an off-grid or convert my auto detailer trailer to an off-road rig. I will look into all the mods you have made when that time comes. Pulled a 6300 pound 21 foot toy hauler 600 miles 8 mpg going around 55 mph to 60 if lucky and first get up the passes really steep ground just take it slow this truck can do anything if it’s a Manuel Automatic will probably burn out doing to many steep up hills in the passes like Idaho exit 1 look out pass

I have a 2020 trd offroad with a manual shift I was towing a larger popup camper did ok until it was time to backup into campsite it would only backup maybe 10ft although it was Muddy tried all the toys the truck had diff lock 4wd truck has decent off road tires it just wouldn't back it up. Anybody else had this problem?

We’re you able to get the total weight of the travel trailer (all your stuff any fluids) when you towed it? Distance towed, towing specs for your specific Tacoma, weight distribution setup, and specific model of travel trailer? I’m looking at a travel trailer to tow with my midsize which is rated for 6500lbs, so would like some info on your setup?

my 2021 TRD gass milage is not bad for hauling 5000 lb trailer ,my problem is susspension is to light ,I need to do something like extra leave spring or air sholk curious if you beef up suspention & what you did ?

No I didn’t do anything with the suspension, it’s just the factory suspension

Sumo springs helps out a lot. I installed them on my Tacoma

Regear it and see if the towing improves, 4.88 gears. Might boost mpg also.

Re gearing improves MPG while towing but lowers what you would get when not towing. Not worth it.

What was the third party transmission cooler you used in addition to the radiator and stock transmission cooler?

Yes the transmission cooler is just a 3rd party addition so essentially 3 different coolers for the transmission fluid
