Nice thing about the military trucks is they are weight rated for offroad. so 2.5 ton is fine hauling 5 tons on road. If you ever need just a little bit more traction, remember there is a little axle lever you can flip to engauge the front axle drive. I never found it usefull to skip gears in these things except, skipping first and starting in 2nd makes it a lot nicer for taking off. 1st gear is only really needed for offroad, crawling, or parades.

A cord of firewood weighs between 2,000 and 3,000 lbs depending on wood type and moisture content. Your Deuce is rated for 5,000 lbs cross-country and 10,000 lbs on roads. You are fine. As a side note: these trucks were never intended to split shift. There is no benefit from doing so and many potential hazards when you do. Driving in very rough conditions should be done in low range but on pavement and within the rated weight limits there is no need to use low range.

You should split when heavy, shift all 5 in L then go H and do 4 & 5.

You should get the external brake fluid reservoir kit from Big Mike. I put one on mine, great for keeping an eye on the level and super easy for adding fluid if need be.

Not sure of any vids out there but it is fairly easy to install, especially if you got the kit from Mike because everything needed is included. I'm not much of a video maker but if I remember this weekend i will take a vid of how I did it.

Your video popped up on my feed today and I’m always in the mood for some deuce action! I have a 68 and come summer, it’s my daily driver. Yours sure seems to shift better than mine. I think an untrained driver sat in my seat and repeatedly downshifted hard on the synchros prior to my ownership as 1,2, and 3 require RPM matching and double clutching. it is; however, pretty much theft proof! If you drive yours all the time like me, don’t be afraid to bump that fuel up. You’ll read everywhere on steel soldiers that you’ll melt a piston down but as long as you run the RPMs up to the governor on every gear and you don’t get crazy pulling a long grade rolling coal like a freight train, you’ll keep enough boost to keep those EGTs down. I turned mine up years ago; and I mean ALL THE WAY UP! I also re-popped the injectors to 3500 psi which offset the total fuel volume injected while shortening the injection event. That also helps atomize the fuel a bit better. All in all, she’s not slow. I can drift a dirt corner in 2nd gear and pass cars on the highway. I have no clue what kind of HP I’m making but the seat of my pants suggests that the power may have doubled. Awesome trucks and awesome video!

Glad that u enjoyed it man . I love driving mine aswell ! I've put tons of miles on mine. Mine does shift pretty good .. I've learned that low range third gear is the ticket. Makes it way easier to pull out because it between 1st and 2nd high range , and then u dont have to go into 2nd gear because all of these have a 2nd gear that's a little wonky to get in sometimes lol

You’re right. That first to second is about a mile and 2 big turns on the way. Lol. I actually never use first at all. I start in 2nd 99% of the time. 👍 I’ve never split shifted but with the power, I’ve never needed to yet. The biggest issue I’ve encountered is the massive RPM drop between gears. Really could use a 6speed with a normal 1st gear. We pretty much have a 4 speed with a granny gear. Lol.

@ShitPoster??? Hey there. I generally use waste oil 90% of the time. It settles in tanks for a while and then I run it through a centrifuge before putting it into the truck. I get an unlimited supply from the shop that I work for. To improve the cleanliness, I also have a coolant heated pre filter on the way up to the FDC. That works very well :)

Great video. I had little doubt the truck would handle the load. I stacked 1.75 cords of firewood (seasoned hardwood) in the back of an M105A2 and pulled it with my M1078. I was worried about the tires on the trailer as they were over their rated limit, but I was only going a few miles. Everything worked out fine. The truck did not even know the load was back there up and down hills, and my wife said the trailer towed fine (she was following me). I had intended to replace the 900 NDCCs with Goodyear G177 1100s before I hauled the wood home, but I could not get that done before the firewood was ready. The G177s are rated for that kind of weight.

G177 are definitely a good choice. I'm waiting on my tires are shot and that's what I'm putting on my duece. The truck definitely wasn't overloaded lol. If I stacked it it could probably hold 3 cords. The only real concern is stopping safety.

A good friend of my dad owns a deuce&1/2 similar to yours and he will take it out to the local truck&tractor pulls and he has to just stop because that sled can’t stop that truck haha id love to own a old military vehicle. My grandpa had a WWII jeep and we would take it all over his cattle ranch

We used to stack pallets of plywood and bales of concertina that high. Both of which should be heavier than that. And then we would drive it cross country through the swamps of Louisiana. Load? You're fine. If you were stacked to the tops of the wood rails by my calculations (12' x 7'6" x 3'6") you should have been carrying 2 1/2 cords. And if it was also stacked higher in the middle then probably closer to 3 cords. Good job.

Those old Hercules multi fuel engines were gutless but as reliable as your favorite hammer and sound fantastic they sound better then any Cummins or Caterpillar out there imo

Yes definitely has little power for the size of truck lol. Mine is a white not a Hercules but they are identical it's just who put it together that's all. Allot of people like the whisler c turbo they sound good but have less flow than the d turbo . Mine has the d which is less whistle but more go lol

The 7.8L multi-fuel was made by Continental,Hercules,and White.All three of them made the LDT-465,LT-465,and LDS-465 for the 1966-1988 M35A2-M756A2. The M35A1 with the LDT-427 was also built by the same three for 1961-1966.They're all the same engine regardless of who built them,but the multi-fuels in the A1 and A2 aren't the same.

I agree man. Honestly I feel like starting out in low range 3rd is easier on the truck .. if u use high range 1st is too low and 2nd is too high. The ratio of 3rd low seems perfect to me. Some people say you'll wear out the transfer case synchro but anything can be fixed and honestly I dont feel like it's doing damage. Thanks again for the comment!!

that's not an air line it's the vent for the master cylinder only, the air pack works like a vacuum booster on an old truck except instead of vacuum it's 120 psi of air that assist in braking.

That hose is just a vent to the reservoir

@@chevyman35089 thanks man! I see that there is a grease point on the resivor part of the brake system. I missed that when greasing... who knows how long its been since that thing has had grease. Mine probably hasnt has the brake fluids changed in 20 years at least... or any oil in the air pack. Always something i want to fix or upgrade but itll still get you around. "They dont make em like they used to"
