When there's no transparency with a money trail, (in any situation) the door is left open for waste, abuse, misuse and fraud. Plus, just knowing how the money is used (for good purposes) supports good will from those who are contributing.

Dennis you are very correct about our check off money. Big Offices and 3 piece suits never had mud on boots or dirty fingers. I myself am getting tired of the dollar here and dollar there. 😡🤢

Back in the 1980's I was the member information manager for the Land of Lincoln Soybean Association. I left after the 1988 soybean checkoff referendum (1/2 get to 2 cent increase) failed in late '88. That failure of the Illinois increase in the checkoff lead to the national soybean checkoff.. With that said, we published and broadcast as much information as possible to inform checkoff contributors of what, where and how the money was used. Prior to working for Land of Lincoln, I worked at the old American Soybean Association in its communication department. We published a lot of information back then. Today, I am in a different business, but I do own some farm ground and receive some information about the soybean checkoff, finding time to read it and learn more about where the money goes has become more difficult, but that is on me.

Yes, I agree, trim and ditch banks, a holes, the banks in the tree roots, but you should be using the chemical if you trim them is soaks in the cut branches and kills the trees. It won’t grow back.

I can't speak about soybeans, but I have previously been on the Idaho pea and lentil commission, in the case of pulses each state has a commission voted on by growers, the commission set the checkoff rate and then the checkoff moves thru the commission. The best way to understand how grower groups and commissions work is to get involved in your commodity groups! These are grower run groups, find out who your commissioners are and attend meetings! In most cases these growers are donating there time and if your a chairman it may be a huge amount of time!!!

I agree on accountability for where the money goes. Like you I’m sure it goes somewhere good….hopefully. I wonder why the standard for test weight on beans is 60lbs because here as long as I can remember if we have 58lb beans that’s bout good as we can do. We and all my neighbors never have 60lb beans. I would think the standard should be 57-58 or so. Getting paid on a bushel when you never have 60lb beans is a lot of beans in a lifetime. I don’t know just a small rant I guess. Great videos!

Yes Dennis, any organization like that should have to give a full Accounting of where the funds go, & if they pass any off to a State Organization they as well should have to disclose accounting from a independent Certified accounting firm. Full public disclosure

The Maryland Grain Producers Utilization Board provides an accounting of the check off dollars on their website and newsletters here. Not sure if your State does something similar.

Dennis, this is one you may not win. There may be a 77 member volunteer board, but they're a dog with no teeth. The USDA has and will continue to do with the money what they want or rather what the bureaucrats direct. You're right, it's a large of money. We need more people such as yourself asking these questions of the USDA!

I have been told you get that checkoff money back. I personally haven't worked that angle. But you may want too look into. Never been happy with any checkoff. We work hard for our money we need to keep it.

dennis i feel your pain, i own a production nursery ie wholesale plants to nurseries and we are charged 5% for all pots that we purchase , so for every $100 i spend on pots i am charged $105 ,it is of course a government charge called a pot levy ,where the money goes i have no idea ps im in australia

Ya checkoff accountability would be nice, but I’m guessing that if we saw how that money is actually getting spent you would be sick to your stomach. Checkoff is just a tax. If we cant opt out, it’s taxes.

We had a grinder and to slow and on a tractor can’t reach nearly far enough on ditches we usually go along ditches and mow as far as we can with a 20 mower, and side arms on tractors are to slow

In the beef industry we have beef check off. One dollar per head is collected at the sale barn. The money goes to the check off board and is supposedly controlled by the usda. Right. The beef boards payroll has swelled, they have their annual meeting in the most expensive places, most of the time the beef check off money goes against the producers in government half assed programs. It was originally designed to educate the public about the nutritional value of beef😂. Like the people who were buying meat didn't all ready know. In my humble opinion any check off is a scam. Just to put money in a very few pockets that couldn't make it in farming or ranching. Have never liked it never will like it. And will always be against any check off of any kind. It does nothing but provide more jobs at the producers expensive with absolutely no benefits at all.

Farm check offs (soybeans, corn, milk, etc) are like union dues and other "donations". Some voluntary and some not. Any organization collecting money should be required to make their financial information publicly available. At least to the people they collected the money from if not to the world. My Dad was a school teacher. He did not join the National Education Association because he knew that his money would go to support political candidates that he did not. If you knew where your check off money is going you might be very happy. Or not.

as an overview I feel the checkoff is robbery! But a couple try harder to service the farmer/rancher, than most. This will start a firestorm, but have been fighting this for 20 for I will tell you MY opinion. The beef checkoff is a global rip off. The money changes hand enough time that it ends up on projects and people that work against the rancher. We have tried multiple time to reform, but the beef states have politicians that are not going to bite the hand that feeds them. Most of the organisations that have their hand in the till, don't want us to know where the money goes. Good Luck

Sounds a whole heck of a lot like taxes! 30% of our income or MORE is forfeited to govt who not only can’t keep a budget but have made our great-great-great grandchildren debt slaves.

I remember when the soybean check off started. It was originally established to help promote the sale of US beans worldwide. I didn't know it was still being enforced. You would think there would have been a deadline for that project to end. I don't think (?) it was a Federal thing, I'm thinking is was some Soybean Growers Organization that was in charge.
