I have ridden on a lot of monohulls and a handful of cats. The best riding boat I have ever been on was a 26 ft Glacier Bay. I went out of East Pass in Destin, Florida during the swell from Hurricane Katrina and it was an unbelievable ride. Hands down the best riding boat I have ever been on. There are three types of cat Hulls. A full displacement, semi-displacement, and planing hull. A Glacier Bay is a full displacement and is by far the best riding one in my opinion. I'm sure the different variations of swells will make a difference in different places, but this was just my experience.

Been out in all kinds of cats, Sharkcats, Allycats, Marckham Whalers, Marlin Broadbills, and they all kill any monos in any seas. (Divers point of view)

Was on a 50’ custom built cat while down in Louisiana in 2010 working the oil spill clean up for 6 months. Up and on the water every morning @ 0600 hrs. Wouldn’t see the dock until between 1800 - 2000 hrs. Ours was the “ambulance” boat. Would run 75-90 mph easy back in the bayou or as fast as you dared in open seas. Even with 6-10’ seas the boat would skip over the top of the waves due to the extra hydrofoil in the middle of the boat. Loved it down there and even got to get some fishing in if we got off early. Nothing like the sunrises or sunsets out on the water. Simply amazing.

Still, one of the best make of cats are the Australian Bruce Harris cats. They are the best for their size when it comes to offshore performance. The got raced back in the day, they were commercial abalone boats all for one good reason. They are the best!

Thank you for the video . Had my first ride on a cat I was interested in buying in September of this year . Really impressed with the stability . Can't remember if it was 20 or 21 feet long but it was 8'6'' wide from the stern to the bow . Looked like a shoe box but that little boat looked and felt like a like a 26 footer . I have never seen that amount of usable space in a boat that size . Also there was a ton of storage below deck in the pontoons . Because of the transom layout there was a nice dedicated boarding area / ladder between the motors which as a diver I really liked . The owner was running from side to side and that boat did not rock . I wish I had of bought it . SIGH

It amazes me how different the boats are compared to what I see on Lake Michigan. I know it's the ocean but there is nothing like these boats on the lake.

Most of these boats would be in peices after a month on the great lakes. It's not just a money thing either. There are plenty of 70' and up fancy ass yachts on the lakes... But you get a much smaller selection of tried and true designs. The big lake waves are steep, sharp, and stack up one after another. I've worked on the ocean, Ontario, Huron, and mainly Superior and Michigan and I'd feel safer in 40 footers on the ocean than in 14 footers on the lakes ANY day of the week. It's like my friend who's a life long salt water captain said "Fuck these lakes, they're fuckin nuts. Them pointy ass waves are like steaming head on into the teeth of a saw blade"... Some of these more "unique" designs with the super low transom and quad outboards mounted LOOOWWWW, can bob over ocean swell all day but would be swamped in a following sea in a minute on the lakes. The waves created here at this inlet being steep from the tide/current going out meeting the ocean coming in are actually similar to small great lakes waves, and you see how much trouble it causes for a lot of these people. Imagine 14-16 foot versions of those.. Sorry newly rich guy with a bad taste in boats, but your Azimut is 300 feet down on the bottom of the lake. Them 16 foot breakers smashed in the stupid hull windows. Lol

So I am a fisherman, but still respect performance boats I believe the cat at 1:01 enclosed cockpit is a DCB boat. I think they're based out of Havasu possibly. they do quite well in the lake of the Ozarks top speed shootout. That boat with twin 400R's will do 140mph or at least 135mph. DCB are super custom so please someone with money get a center console one!!!!!

Your close..it's actually a Doug wright not a DCB. Looks like the 32ft model they build. Very popular for offshore racing. However DCBs are bad ass boats they're based out of El cajon CA but Havasu is like their backyard hot spot. I go out there every year in April for the desert Storm event. It's incredible. It's worth the trip just to see the London bridge.

I’m land locked but I love em when on vacation. Been on a couple of charters and they are not so harsh riding as a v bottom. I am not used to their cornering yet. Only been on one 3 times for a few hours each time. Thanks for all these videos. I’m kinda addicted!

@@BoatZone I remember a vacation my wife and I took to Fort Jefferson off Key West. I had ridden in cats before so when I saw one for charter to the Fort I told my wife "don't worry this boat will ride very soft and smooth". We were in 1'-2' seas going out so the ride was decent but the cat sneezed constantly, getting everybody wet. Coming back the seas were 3'-5' and we were pitching rolling and slapping the water. Wife threw up and I almost did. Our reentry was brutal, slamming down on the hard benches. Needless to say, she was not a happy woman when we got back to the dock. She raised hell with the Capt and I didn't blame her. He kept the power on, not caring about our comfort, he just wanted to get back to the dock fast. She has never ridden in a cat(or a boat) since. My advice, if you want to charter a cat, do your homework about the boat before you go out in it. You might get in one like the one we rode in and you really don't want one of those...

'Livin' Off The Land"?? LOL your name should be 'Livin' On The Water'. As to cats and Vs, I like cats better b/c the air driving through the tunnel raises the boat and gives it more speed plus the ride is more stable and softer as well. I did see several cats rolling pitching and "sneezing" in that rough water though. However, you won't see a trimaran doing any of that. Their port and starboard sponsons prevent those motions. I especially like the larger cats like the Freemans which can hold two motors on each sponson, giving them more speed. Here is a multihull craft the US Navy has been testing. It's called a "Twin M" hull form which you can see in the head on shots in the video.
