I really like the videos on the Kuiper Belt objects. They are the ones the public knows least about.

Indeed, as a college student of astronomy, back in 1971, our lab assignment was to calculate the MASS of the planet mars by using the orbits of its two moons. To do this we divided into two-person teams and were given, wonders of wonders!, electronic calculators to do so. They were small desk top models, 4 function and perhaps square root too. Our professor cautioned us to "be careful, as they cost almost 500 dollars apiece". (This was about 6 months before the first hand size calculators came out that everybody was buying up for 130 bucks). I learned an obscure fact that it is possible to be "too accurate" when calculating such things, that close approximations could be more accurate in some cases. A fact that served me well in my later Science career.

0:21 That's not what it looks like at all, it's actually a vast, almost entirely void place just like the main asteroid belt.

This obvious inaccuracy ruins the video for me. Objects that close would quickly clump together due to gravity.

Haumea and its two known moons to me are more than worthy of a visit from a space probe. I suspect there could be more, smaller moons closer in and Haumea is probably not just water ice on its frigid surface. The ring system and odd shape make it unique among the large dwarf planets found so far.

It's possible there could be smaller moons out there we haven't discovered yet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

In my opinion (which counts about zilch) if the body is massive enough to pull itself into spherical shape it's a planet. I don't care if it has cleared its orbit of other masses, orbits another planet or orbits with other masses. That said we can have various classes of planets. I wonder if there are any dwarf planets in the solar system that were stolen from other stars that may have made a close approach in the past.
@JoseManuelDark1310

@@mpetersen6Thanks for your opinion, it' has been useful. Yes, I'm wondering the same now that you mentioned it. I think is very probable having dwarf planets or other kinds of objects from other stars systems... In that case, we will have a chance to study them and know more about that kind of interaction with other stars.

I wonder if early in its history Huamea orbited another larger body in a fast orbit. If it w still warm enough it may have assumed its present shape then. Later gravitational iteractions may have seen it ejected from itsorbit around the parent body.
@InsaneCuriosity
@InsaneCuriosity 2 ай бұрын
It’s possible that Haumea had a close encounter with a larger body in the past, which could explain its unusual shape. Gravitational interactions over time could have definitely played a role in shaping its orbit and even ejecting it from around a parent body.

Insane Curiosity, since both perihelion and aphelion have 'helion' at the end, they need to be pronounced that way. Thus, it's ap-HEAL-ee-un, not uh-FEEL-ee-un. Woh,

Interesting topic but due to the copious amount of ads unwatchable video. As watching it on mobile ad blockers are out of the question sadly. Dislike from me, the uploader should refrain from putting too many ads in the middle section of the video.

I wonder just how much it would increase the cost of a program such as New Horizons to build multiple probes and keep them in storage for ready opportunities. Launching today with a Falcon Heavy would probably be cheaper than when New Horizons was launched.
