There is also another legend about the doll island. Where the older man had found a doll where the little girl had drowned in the water. The shrine is the original doll that he found. After he found that, he began to keep collecting.

The story I heard is The man was heart broken so he moved to the island, and a dead girl floated near him and her doll washed up on shore. He felt haunted and hung her doll up to please her. The rest is history XD

So cool ! I have been to Xochimilco and taken a cruise on the trajineras (the boats). I was always so curious about doll island and i am glad you got the opportunity to go to it. If you are still in Mexico CIty , you should take a trip to Guanajuato, Guanajuato. I do not know if there are abandoned places there but i just think you would find Las Momias de Guanajuato (the Mummies, yes, real naturally mummified bodies) interesting :)
