Here we go with the EASTER SPECIAL!
Customer was on the way to my shop in his 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe for a P0018 timing diagnosis, but didn't quite make it to the shop...
Car started running very poorly and blowing massive clouds of blue smoke!! WOW.
I drove to town to check out the car and things look pretty bad.
Turns out this Hyundai is hiding more Easter Eggs than you might expect :)

Bank 2 intake CVVT has either sheared or pushed the locating pin between it and the camshaft. Now the CVVT is slipping on the cam and has bound in an out of time position. This is why when you energize the oil control valve you still get a reaction but base time on that cam is still off. When you pull the valve cover off you will see your timing marks on the CVVTs and crank line up great but the cam is off. Looking forward to part 2!

Happy Easter. It's crazy I had one of these engines in my shop this week. It was 09 without direct injection and in a Kia. Previous ship spent 3k of customers dough and told them it had a broken wire to send it to me because I'm better with wires. He had missed setup of base timing and bank 1 intake cam was off timing. It's a car lot car. This is same shop that did timing in a traverse 2 times then the engine blew up. Car lot bought engine and new timing stuff and post repair they called me to install crank sensor. Instead of installing it I did cam crank and they also had set timing wrong on that one. I still don't understand why they car lot still sends engine work to them.

If I took pictures on Tuesday of one of these I could show you exactly what you will find on the CVVT on the intake side and the cam. Pop that valve cover off, it only takes a few minutes and put a wrench on the cam while holding the chain and you will be able to turn it where the pin sheared. Read the TSB and order the updated CVVT and chain tensioner. Hint, that engine will come out the front in about an hour and it is a lot easier to do it that way than to fight the limited room in there to get the timing cover out.

Bert, basically, Ivan is checking the pressure in the cylinder for all 4 strokes of the piston. The cam is retarded (turned backwards) and leaving the intake valve open too long. The piston starts up on compression but the valve is still closing. This lets the pressure out so instead of 150 pounds in the cylinder, it is only 35. The same thing would be true even with a model T engine.

Typical intake valve close is about 600*(40-60ABDC) so the intake isn’t too far out. But in any case intake valve timing has no way to cause the fuel flooding condition. The injectors are over feeding that bank. The hydrolock would indicate the injector is stuck open.

Maybe I missed something here. But it seems like there are 2 problems here. The injector for the cylinder you're testing on is acting like a failed injector. A timing issue won't usually cause the cylinder to hydrolock from fuel. When you cranked the engine over with the hose adapter fuel came spraying out. Also wouldn't the pressure waveforms be severely skewed from cylinder wash? The waveforms look erratic as if the fuel is not only skewing them but also causing the low compression.
@calholli
@calholli 2 жыл бұрын
The fuel can't "cause low compression" ---- IN order for there to be good compression, the intake valve has to CLOSE while the piston is at the very bottom--- so then you get that full length of the stroke to squeeze the volume of the cylinder down to a pancake...... If your timing is off--- then the piston will be coming up higher and higher, but the compression never builds-- because the valve is still open, which just lets the air vent back out of the cylinder. The reason the compression is so low (only 25psi or so, when it should be 150psi)--- is because the valve timing is so far off that by the time the valve finally closes, the piston is already near the top-- so it only catches the last moments of compression happening. (ironically, this is exactly how an "atkinson cycle" engine works-- but that's irrelevant)........... The reason there's so much fuel, is because since there is no compression, the cylinder never fires and never burns. This thing is only running on 3 cylinders. The other 3 are just dumping fuel in there over and over, and never burning-- so it adds up fairly quickly................ Point being, he has to pull the chain and re-set the timing with a new chain- there's no way around it.
@kipamore
@kipamore 2 жыл бұрын
Novice here; isnt the hydrolock caused by the pressure transducer being in the cylinder, rather than a spark plug?
@edwinlomonaco6754
@edwinlomonaco6754 2 жыл бұрын
@@calholli I agree with everything you stated here. With the exception of fuel NOT causing low compression. Excess fuel in the combustion chamber can absolutely cause low compression as it washes down the piston rings and thus you lose compression. And the amount of fuel coming out of that engine is pretty extreme. With that said I'm sure we'll find out what the root cause is. And I trust Ivan's work and skills. I'm in no way stating I think he's wrong. Just an observation. As this is also my career and I'm always learning. Thus asking questions is definitely part of it. So if it were me, which it isn't, I would want to make sure excess fuel is not causing all the readings to be off. I.E. perform the same tests on a neighboring cylinder. Disable fuel. Clear cylinders out. Add oil to cylinders to restore compression. And retest. Again this is going by what I'm seeing. At no point in the video did he state the vehicle is only running on 3 cylinders. There were codes for multiple cylinder misfires. But those aren't always accurate. Just giving my perspective. And pushing back a little on the fuel related low compression.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 2 жыл бұрын
@@edwinlomonaco6754 Great point Edwin! Have started many "fuel washed" engines by holding the pedal to the floor and cranking it. You are spot-on, the excess fuel was likely causing the extremely low peak compression numbers!
@calholli
@calholli 2 жыл бұрын
@@edwinlomonaco6754 I was just deducing that myself... With the timing being so far off on that bank, that it was causing the compression to be that low-- and how they are getting flooded with fuel--- I just assumed that the entire bank isn't running at all/ and that's what is causing the excess fuel to build up. I mean, that's three lines of evidence pointing towards those cylinders not running at all-- and the engine has a terrible miss. But, that is me jumping to conclusions, I'll admit............... So If I'm hearing what you're saying: The timing may not be off by that much really-- so it should still be running somewhat-- but the compression is low because of excess fuel-------- SO are you saying that maybe there's a leaky injector dumping fuel in one of the cylinders? and that's why there is excess fuel-- and that's causing the low compression? I can see your point: It could be either way I guess. I didnt' really pay attention to how far off the timing was retarded............. My point was, if it's still running, then where is that excess fuel actually coming from?

I'm surprised a 2016 car was specc'ed for 5W-30 oil according to the time mark at 22:37. This generation of Santa Fe came out in 2013 when most, if not all, Asian vehicles all went to 0W-20. News just came out of a class action lawsuit again Hyundai for excessive oil consumption. Probably why Hyundai called for heavier oil because they knew their engine would consume oil even worse if specc'ed for 0W-20.

Watching video now had same issue on a 14 these engines have a bulletin and warranty long block replacement free. These engines are notoriously bad.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics the connector rods cast are defective, burrs break loose and mess up timing and bad chain and guides. They are replacing engines on them almost daily. It’s supposed to be up to 125k but I’ve seen them do up to 200k these are on the 4 cylinders not sure on the 6 I’m curious as to what you found

@Jonathan A I know I said that, the 3.3 have same issues however they didn’t put them in the bulletin’s. Doesn’t change the fact they have issues. Twisted cams infieror parts Jonathan.

Scope for the win......again. That engine sounds bad and yes I know the high pressure fuel pump does make noise.

The high pressure pump is so noisy on a cold start on my Kia 3.3 V6 that the service manual I bought actually has a note in it that the tapping noise is normal behavior. Sure takes some getting used to!

You're messing with the timing, what is the chance all these timing parts go bad. Something or someone messed with the timing and maybe continues to mess with it. The something mechanical guess would be the timing chain or gears have an issue, was the engine rebuilt and are other timing parts like cams correct. You just bought the car, unless the engine is totaled you have it towed to the shop and get it fixed.
