Haunted Long Beach Sunnyside Cemetery

From headless roller-coaster riders to doomed brides, Long Beach has a long history of gruesome tales. In the spirit of Halloween, the Long Beach Post has compiled a series of videos looking at the city’s scariest stories.
The Haunted Long Beach series begins Sunday, Oct. 28, with a stroll down Igor’s Alley in Los Cerritos, the setting of a grisly high school urban legend.
In the next video on Monday, Oct. 29, we tell some of the tales behind numerous ghosts seen roaming among the tombs at Sunnyside Cemetery.
On Tuesday, Oct. 30, we will take you on a tour of the stories Breakers Hotel in Downtown Long Beach, where visitors came for luxurious amenities, but found something much more sinister.
And, finally, on Halloween, Wednesday, Oct. 31, we visit the most haunted place in Long Beach: The Queen Mary hotel, where ghosts abound from the propeller shaft to the first-class pool.

That cemetery was my stomping grounds as a baby goth in the 80's. It's most definitely haunted.

I use to live across the street from this cemetery and lived on Lemon street back in 94 and use to passed by there all the time riding the city bus to school. I hate coming home late at night and knowing I have to get off at the cemetery. One of the bus driver claimed to witness giving a ghost a ride and the person never gets off. Never open your window at night, if you live next to a cemetery, which we do and my parents felt and like different spirits pushing them down. My neighbor after coming back from dropping a relative at north Long Beach and saw a lady in white. I think it might be the ghost of lady Bessie Braxter waiting near the bus stop.

This is going to sound strange, but as a child, my mom says every time we drove by (which was a lot because we used to drive that way to get to Long Beach Ballet), I would stare at the cemetery longingly. She knew this was odd, hence why she never let me go.

One random night myself & 3 others are walking through this particular cemetery. Half way through the path in the cemetery there’s almost what looks like a white figure in the distance. Could’ve just been the reflection of someone’s headlights of a passing car. But what makes this interesting is not only did I see it but also one of the other people seen it too. And we described what we seen was a woman in a white wedding dress. Without any knowledge of who Bessie Baxter was my cousin and I immediately knew who and what we saw. Describing her exactly the way others do. And exactly how she was laid to rest in her casket. The next day I look up stories on the cemetery and I come to find people have experienced the exact same thing. It’s definitely interesting….. some say spirits are not real but it’s hard to deny clear proof. Life is very interesting. RIP to Bessie Baxter. She definitely deserved to live her life 😢🙏💔

Haunted Long Beach for sure… and sunny side cemetery has some type of energy I didn’t see anything while I was there but what I got was a voice on my way home… a lady’s voice followed me half way home I don’t recall hearing it. But the next day when I was sober and I saw the video with friends and family we all heard the same thing. I lost that video because no one cares anyway. I don’t recommend going out late on your own. Be safe y’all ✌️ while I was there and I walked in I slowly started losing track of were i was going. I was recording and it was dark out so it was hard to keep track of my path I felt confused more sketched out so I quickly turned back. Thank you Bessie and Vern lol… this was 2020 btw the Colorado lagoon and the naval base at seal beach have some strong activity there and I was 100% sober
