Hey Ben, you said you know the basics of how rainbows appear. The light is reflected at exact 40° - 42° to yout eye, so you'll be always in the middle. Interesting fact: A rainbow is a full circle, although we are too low/ on sea/horizonlevel, we only are able to see the bow. It is possible if your above the sun, for example in a helicopter while sunrise. Have a great day :)

Ben. Here is some camping advice. The best camping that is close to Cape Town (close ish) is the richtersveld. My family and I go there a lot. It's awesome. And it's on the orange river!!

hey Ben brown. ... so rainbows.... each wavelenght of a light has a different index of refraction, meaning they "reflect" off at different angles. .. hence in the end, what you end up is whats called dispersion ( of continuous spectra; continuous in the sense all 7 frequencies/ colors are visible ) .... Now if you're unsure what REFRACTION is, it's when light trajectory changes merely due to the different media or materials it travels through! !! they're not perfectly connected but hopefully you get the idea! !!!

Here you go lol. Name: Nigel, Croydon Qualification: Degree in rainbow-ology Answer: You can't, because rainbows rely on a refraction of light when the light is coming from behind you. So if you were looking at the sun, you wouldn't see a rainbow, but you could see one if you turned round and looked away from the sun. The rainbow is caused when this light from behind you goes through droplets of water. A rainbow will keep moving, as it's from the observers point of view, so you can't run past it to the other side.

As per your question regarding rainbows, the short and simple answer is: You need 3 things to see a rainbow: water, sunlight, and an angle of 42 degrees. When sunlight coming from behind the observer (you) hits the water droplets it refracts and then reflects back at a precise angle of 42 degrees to your line of vision. Different colours are produced because light of different wavelengths reflect back at ever so slightly different angles. Further, each raindrop only reflects one colour and the spectrum we see is produced by many raindrops reflecting one unique wavelength of light. Since such a specific angle is required, you can never "approach" a rainbow. Even though someone in the distance may appear to be under the rainbow, they themselves actually have a different perspective.

The people on the other side of the rainbow wouldn't be able to see it. You see it because the sun in behind you. The light is bounced around inside the water droplets in a very particular way and when it comes out again it's been split up into its colours (which is what makes the rainbow). The people on the other side would just see clouds and the sun because the light can't bounce around inside the water droplets in just the right way and still make it to their eyes. Super simplified. Canon have a pretty good explanation on their website that's worth a google.

Ok Ben, so the rain is like a prism so the sun's light passes through the the rain which cause the colors to reflect.
