Wasn't expecting a Voltron made of Shiren the Wanderer, Parasite Eve, and Resident Evil, but it seems to work pretty decently.

For those of you who don't know, sliding puzzles are extremely easy. Just solve it top to bottom until there are only two rows left, then solve the last two rows simultaneously from left to right (assuming the blank spot is in the bottom right). You can solve any size puzzle extremely fast this way, as fast as you are able to move the pieces into place one at a time.

Instead of "easy", I'd say there's a heuristic (method) for solving them reliably. Once you know the heuristic (steps), they are easy. But before you know the steps, it's very difficult. Like a Rubik's cube.

The vhs tapes game is very interesting but I think the writing does veer away from being just weird into being Random Humor a bit too much for my tastes . Its very impressive to me how often it does something new and weird visually though, it seems like a lot of effort was put into it and its got me interested at the very least

I think it nails the sweet spot. It makes sense, but it's not right. This is the highest form of the comunication.

@@AllisonIsLivid looking into the author's work it checks out; they're korean and seem super invested in lots of western internet and computer culture, ranging from youtube poop to euro demoscene work. it's cool that these scenes seem to echo through their vocabulary, their creative vision, etc. just a really excellent and honest blend of inspiration.

the writing style in that game is giving me a headache. Every single line is "lol I'm so random and silly" which just doesn't work, it's like having a dessert that is 100% sugar, it's nice at first but you get sick of it very fast.

I'm not really sure what to think of that second demo. I really love the idea of looking into the player character's past through the use of videotapes, with certain things in the environment missing or blocked off because you never recorded them and/or can't remember. It just seems ironic how many of these ps1 type games use old vhs filters/aesthetics, but of course the one game were you literally go inside vhs tapes doesn't use that style

The language choices, sound design, and visuals in Baabosaangjaar coalesce into a real mesmerizing vibe.

@@IWantThatKey i wouldn't say heavily; it certainly rides the style's coattails far less than PRS originally rode cboyardee's; baabo is definitely a melting pot of many things and seems to largely pull from late 00s/early 10s YTP editing.

BAABOSAANGJAAR is 100% my alley. i know some folx on the chat were a bit frustrated at the lingo, but it's ... it gave me a really specific feeling of the awkwardness of google translate and trying to communicate across language boundaries. knowing the designer is south korean really made the pieces come together for me. it also reminds me of the kind of fragmentation and spaghetti-fication, i guess, that can come with trauma and brain stuff. it feels really familiar? especially how markedly strange the language is throughout these 'past memories', of things which likely aren't clearly remembered, but they are the best you can do.

OK I'm not crazy, BAABOSAANGJAAR was on the Haunted Advent Calendar collection of demos. I guess this is just another version that has a lot more improvement?

"Resident Evil, but it's a Roguelike" is a surprisingly good idea that I'm surprised we haven't seen. I'm not sure House of Necrosis is the right implementation, though.

Rouglike Tilebased Resident Evil is an interesting concept, but, Uncertain that it works here. It's like if Crypt of the Necrodancer was boring, or if Spooky's House wasn't tongue in cheek. I think it's a concept with merit, It just needs some polish. A lot of polish. Get this game some Keilbasa.

BAABOSAANGJAAR (A name which I had to copy-paste) feels like it's trying to be one of those 'weird' games like Space Funeral or Hylics but since it's doing it deliberately it doesn't work. It feels like it's just weird for weird's sake instead of actually trying to be something. SGF's dry commentary on the surealities was very funny though.

5:11 seeing that menu, this isnliterally.jupiter hell, but re style. Jupiter hell, btw, is a roguelime fashioned after doom 3, it has very similar mechanics and menu structure to this demo.

The middle game... did not like it. It seemed frustratingly "random" and "wacky" and it didn't really catch me. I got bored. I think they were trying to go with a slightly "off" translation thing, but I found it grating.
