RE: The indentations.. We have those in the subway tunnels in town here also... they're meant as retreat spots for workers in the tunnel if a traiun happens to go by, they have a spot to duck off the track and wait for it to pass, if I am not much mistaken.

Ohhh would love to go bike riding on that trail. That bridge is beautiful. What a great back drop for photographers. Wheeling looks like an old and interesting place. Though I don't want to live in a city, I find them interesting to visit and explore. I especially like the very old ones.

There is a tremendous amount of history in this area. I really enjoy exploring and discovering it.

The No. 1 refers to the first tunnel heading east on the B&O pike line that went to Pittsburgh.

The night trip sounds fun. But what about the other tunnel off of 70 right around the car tunnel. That one might still be for rail use. I've always heard that one is haunted, and longer.

I found the Chapline Hill Tunnel. Don't know if that is the one you're talking about. It's over a half mile long lol. Gotta get someone with a light to go with me lol

Theres a grave yard right above it... and actually the grave yard was dug up to build the interstate

There's still headstones up at the top and above the tunnel that date back to the mid-1800's. Back in the 1800's, an individual that was tasked to exume the bodies and move them, got most but not all of them.
