The word "freaky" really best describes what I love about this franchise. I think the first movie is the freakiest, every movie after just riffs on the freakiness of that first one, like a remix only plus action, plus gothic themes, plus studio interference, plus dark comedy, plus other popular alien-monster franchise. One thing I respect and found captivating about Prometheus and Covenant is how they had their own fresh freaky elements, like existential and skin-crawling kinds of freaky, not like Resurrection's goofy levels of freaky. This movie kept evolving the freakiness of the Ridley Scott prequels while taking it back to the edge of your seat horror of the first film.

Fan service films hit or miss with me depending on one deciding factor: 1) Was it done out of love for the franchise and to just have a fun film? 2) Or was it done for fear of stepping out of the comfort zone and hoping to tug on sentimental strings for brownie points? Basically, if they just say nah we just wanted a fun movie to reminisce about, I can respect that.

I did appreciate that Fede kept it pretty quiet for the most part in space. But he didn't keep it purely silent. We could hear Rain breathing. We could hear the sounds inside her suit. And we could also hear the vacuum of space pulling the air from the ship towards her, which to me feel less like a sound thing, and more like a touch thing. She could FEEL the air being pulled out around her. As anyone who's ever placed their and on their heart before knows, physical sense is heavily associated with sound. And of course I'm not even mentioning the fact that you can be knocked down by a literal sound wave. Except now. I just mentioned it. And that is honestly my favorite use of film sound in a space scene. Using sounds we (or the character) would hear, but also simulating touch THROUGH sound. Which is very cool.

It’s not a bad place to draw inspiration from, at all. It’s the best thing to come out of this franchise since Aliens, and to be honest, the game made me scream a few times. Plus I love how the Xenomorph adapts as a hunter. *SPOILER* The Xenomorph grabs Kay by impaling her, but in doing so, causing her to lose blood, making her unsuitable for embryo implantation. This same Xenomorph grabs Rain in the elevator sequence, but notice how it doesn’t impale her, it learned from its mistake. It’s the depiction of the alien’s intelligence that I love.

Honestly just wished there were a couple more scenes with the characters before they went up e.g. 1) After Rain finds out her contract gets extended, we see her day-to-day before her ex, Tyler, calls (Instead, the call happens after she walks out and helps Andy from the bullies) 2) After the mission brief, Rain goes home to pack what she needs and/or they all have one last meal or something before they take off (Instead, they seem to leave immediately) Also, fun fact: they recorded all the audio on tape to emulate the sound quality (especially screams) in the 70-80s

Hello! Been lurking for a while, but, I just watched this movie on DVD and thought I'd swing by after watching your review. I feel that this movie is just the return to form the franchise really needed. I agree with you about the fan service nods to previous films, I really liked them. It was great to see the 79 designs carried over into the overall look of everything, it really made you feel at home. I also got real Alien Isolation vibes from the space station and thought the Xenomorph design borrowed a bit from there too. While Cailee Spaeny may not be Sigourney by any stretch, she was the final girl for this generation and I still really liked her character. Bringing back the A2 android in the shape of Rook was a nice touch to me and on my TV I didn't think the CGI was that jarring, perhaps it's different in 4K. Anyway, loving the channel, keep up the good work!

I saw it on the Monday after it dropped on IMAX and I plan on seeing it again on IMAX!! I also didn’t mind Alien 3. I know a lot of other hardcore fans don’t really care for it, I didn’t mind it. @@jordanjohnston655 Most criticism is legitimate when there is thought behind it, but in the Romulus case it felt very knee-jerk since it came hard and fast on day one. In regards to the Ian Holmes situation, not only did he serve a purpose in the story, as you said, but it was also his widow who okayed it. You know, someone who literally knows him better than anyone else? I think that's fine. I've seen some people respond to that fact saying that a great grandchild who didn't know them shouldn't be able to sign off on something like that for money, but... While I agree with that, it's also irrelevant, because it's not what happened. I'm not in a relationship currently. But I'd assume that if I ever got married, that I would think that my spouse would be able to speak for me after I died because they will have known me that well. Of course I'd also expect them to demand a higher quality of deepfake, or just use purely practical effects to replicate my face, because I wouldn't want to be artificially resurrected and be in the uncanny valley. Edit: I am pretty sure that they did use an animatronic as well, but they definitely deepfaked its entire face.

One of my siblings likes this series. Not that much of a fan myself, although I liked Prometheus, and the ideas explored in that series. Body horror really isn't my cup of tea. In any case, the visuals, especially the outer space stuff, those planet rings specifically, were...stellar. After thinking about the movie for a few days (it left an impression for sure), I realized that the movie was a testament to human ingenuity, as the others in series. And it was difficult to ignore the class dynamics of the movie. These characters, essentially everyday working people, got a glimpse behind the curtain, so to speak, and saw the machinations of a conspiracy. Nice review. Like hearing your thoughts. Hopefully, the channel covers the Salem's Lot show on cable?

I was thoroughly entertained as well. The chemistry between Raine and Andy was touching. Having said that, there is a difference in fan service. Deadpool & Wolverine gave the fans everything they wanted to see that the studio said, would never work. Example, 24 yrs ago the studio had no faith in Wolverine wearing his mask & costume. Deadpool & Wolviner finally did it and Hugh Jackman looked iconic in it. Alien Romulus paid homage to a lot of things we’ve seen and/ or dialogue we’ve heard before. 🤷♂️ Not a deal breaker but it didn’t take any risks.

I mean yeah I had fun with it but it’s a little safe and afraid to move out of the shadow it’s living under, namely the legacy of the first two films. It’s too reliant on fan service and thin characters to carry a story that’s already been done better decades before. It didn’t have much of a voice beyond nostalgia and I’m really getting tired of legacy films retreading instead of innovating. Still, I’m glad it’s doing well and I didn’t hate it for what it is. Omg you are so on point! I love the setup with alien romulus! There's good acting, expertly crafted props and CGI, virtually everything were created with a purpose/reason in mind and there's resolution to each of the setup. Though I would say there might have been some pacing/logic issues with it, for example, when the aliens close in, Rain and Andy even have time to talk about their old jokes... Which is a bit weird. Also, Rain told Kay to go back to the ship by herself.. That was a bit forced, I mean she was so badly injured and everything, at least send her back to the ship first.... But overall, it's still a great movie of the year that you can't miss!

Hey Kylie, Solid review as always glad to hear you enjoyed alien Romulus. The main reasons why I'd also like it we're because of Fede Alvarez direction relatively felt stoic, atmospheric and chilling, camera shots and the overall practical effects were amazing. Also the face huggers how they were able to do all these movements crawling, running, skipping & maneuvering on the ship was very creepy & eerie. Definitely agree with you, it was way less fan service than the other previous alien films. They're we're references, lines which directly intertwined with the first two. Also definitely feel at times the CGI did feel a bit distracting. The ending felt a bit too anticlimactic! Otherwise the film is definitely a recommended watch.

If you rewatch Alien 3, make sure it's the superior Assembly Cut, it's much more thoughtful than the theatrical version.

I agree with you, however, I just have to ask… what foundation are you using/skin care because you look flawless here!! The natural glow! 🔥🔥🔥

Literally still using tarte shape tape concealer lol. But I like the fenti foundation for the winter months when my skin gets more pale and unevenly toned

As a very long Alien fan, I thought it was excellent!

I'm in my forties and I really enjoyed it. Really curious to hear your take on Prometheus and Covenant once you get to see them.

I love the movie enough that I was forgiving of how Rook looked.

I just came back from it and you popped up on my feed lol! ...I enjoyed it for what it was and it should be noted that Ian Holm's family gave their blessing to use his likeness.
