I absolutely LOVE this movie. So many quotable lines, it's so hilarious. Christian Bale was born to play Patrick Bateman. I don't know how many times I have quoted the Huey Lewis scene to anyone who will listen.

I think I'll always be unsure about how I feel about the ending, but I never questioned if it was all in his head.. I just love how Mary and Bale had a vision and knew exactly what the film should be despite a million different road blocks.. I love how Bale passed on a bunch of roles for almost a year knowing DiCaprio would eventually pull out.. I love how the suits wouldn't even talk to Mary after she and Bale got their way, the final product is the ultimate "see I told you so!".. I understand not wanting to take a chance on an unknown actor, but still.. and yes Bale deserved all of the awards.. Patrick Bateman is a great character, obviously not one that should be idolized, but he's simply a riveting and captivating character.. the film is simply lightning in a bottle!

Awesome Deep Dive, K. I loved "American Psycho" when it came out in the movie theatre; I had just started grad school and remember all of the MBA-type douchebags around town turning into the next Patrick Bateman's LOL. Lots of quotable lines to this day. My sister-in-law lended me her copy of the novel, which was so much more violent and shocking! But the director Mary Harron made the film version her own; much more satirical in nature

I have to tell a story regarding the upstaging over trivial bullshit that men do. That scene when Bateman sweats is comical, but realistic. My brother-in-law always tries to reel me in to that competitive bullshit and the last time he did it he was trying to brag about going on vacation and smugly asked me if I've ever traveled. After I told him the furthest Ive been was the Bajamas he hot red and sweaty and angrily asked me how I got there. It was so fucking weird. This dude thinks Im an asshole because I stopped talking to him, but I stopped talking to him because every single conversation was a competition over stupid shit.

Awesome video!!! My ex and i first watched this late one night. We we're both sick in bed flipping around cable and fell in love with it. We probably watched it 10 times over a couple of weeks. Then every time we came across it on tv, we had to turn it on. One day we looked at each other, and basically at the same time said "is there something wrong with us"? Lol. We always viewed it as a black comedy. Bale is just amazing in it. Classic!

This movie was neither directed by nor produced by Michael Bay. And it really shows. In terms of the dream or reality debate, it never even occurred to me to interpret it as a dream until I heard people debating it. My first time watching it, I interpreted it as real. And re-watching it, I still can't agree with the dream interpretation. But it probably doesn't matter either way. The commentary, themes, and general message of the movie still remain the same.

However, seeing how the film has become popular among feminists and queer people has made me reevaluate it. A film with such a broad spectrum and discussion deserves to be seen.

Ok, I broke down and decided to view this deep dive before watching this movie again since it has been awhile. The first thing that struck me that I did not know is that it was directed by a woman. Oh now you’re thinking I’m going to make some comment about women in the work place, bah bah bah. No, damn a women directing a psycho male killing people. Interesting 🤔 Don’t get me wrong in two marriages I do have four sons 😊 such a keen prospective on so many things. Makes me feel I know so much about women. But let’s get real I’m just scratching the surface. 😉 Who directed the movie watching your channel and your deep dives has help me better to appreciate those that contributed to making a good movie and why. I always look at directors as the person looking through the lens of the camera and saying this is what I want people to see. Yes, I feel that watching this deep dive of the film will give me a greater insight when I watch it again real soon. Thanks, great job.

Best part is toward the end. He shoots a car (I think it's a cop car) and it immediately blows up. He looks at the gun with confusion. Comedy gold. When I was a kid I watched this as a serious serial killer flick. Even then though, I knew all the wallstreet culture and materialism in the movie was satire. Now I watch it as it's intended, fucking comedy. I read the book as well. And I can see how some people in the early 90's got the descriptive gore comedy of it wrong. Still I have to imagine a lot of these people read these things out of context. I was still on social media when I read it. And I would post little passages out of context intentionally. I'm sure there's still someone out there thinking about "fucking cardboard women." 😎

When it comes to American Psycho, the movie really is the way to go. The book, in my opinion, is way too unwieldy. It’s not bad by any means, but you’re spending 400 pages with Bateman as your narrator, and at a certain point you’re like, “Okay! I get it.” The movie is absolutely true to the spirit of book but feels like a tighter, more easily digestible edit of Bret Easton Ellis.

@@HauntedHippie I’d love to see a fan edit of the novel where only the parts of the book that correspond to the movie are included. great deep dive-- awesome clips and thorough research! i feel like fight club is comparable in that a lot of people romanticize the text and don't understand the subtext lol. and a lot of the greatest endings are ambiguous-- some people love to argue for closure, the sopranos has a classic ambiguous ending and people are still arguing about what it means haha. there's a great short story called the lady or the tiger with an ambiguous ending. ambiguous endings. subtext. media literacy is important! there's a great video from final girl studios called Why American Psycho is More Relevant Than Ever (And Why Women Love It), that's the only other video i feel like adds to the conversation in a not film-bro-y way haha.

I read the novel by Bret Easton Ellis years ago. Found it deeply disturbing. Bret Easton Ellis said it was a polemic against Reaganism. Ellis interviewed guys on Wall Street for the novel -- back in the late 80s. And I remember that Ellis talked about how these Wall St. traders were obsessed with Don the con Trump. And Ellis, as he points out in the interview, said they didn't want to talk about their jobs. But their status, their cars, their homes etc. These guys in the financial sector are very shallow, very superficial. Sociopathic, One could even point out that Patrick Bateman is Don the Con Trump.

It doesn't matter to me if Patrick Bateman killed people or not, either way he's still out of his freaking mind haha I recommend reading the book too. It has such a specific feel to it. In the book, Patrick Bateman is more of a concept than a character. The story is filtered through him even though there's not much to him on purpose. It's like he exists and doesn't exist at the same time. That's why I love the line, "I'm just not there" from the movie. It completely captures everything about him in one line.

Mary Harron is a brilliant director, I think she did a great job directing this film. It’s so fucked up, but also really hilarious. Then again, I have a very dark sense of humor, so I guess that has something to do with it. I think Patrick Bateman is the ultimate cautionary tale for men. The movie is practically screaming at the audience that you should never admire this guy. As hilarious as Christian Bale’s performance is, I have a really personal disgust for Patrick Bateman. I absolutely despise toxic masculinity, and Patrick is the poster boy for it. He’s an arrogant, pretentious, sadistic, and incredibly pathetic narcissist who struts around to hide how weak he really is. In other words, he’s the perfect example of a toxic masculinity fanboy.

I'm so glad you put in the Robert Downey Jr. clip and mentioning male validation cause what Rob says in the clip is exactly how I felt around a lot of the guys I knew. Difference between this video and the film bros videos is they don't have a cult, and they probably just talk about how they relate to Patrick Bateman and they're all alphas 🤢

WOW!! This might be your best deep dive yet Kylie! Its was funny, cute, and educational! I gotta say, I learned some background of making the movie that I never knew before! From death threats to hitler, what a crazy range of Insight! I actually saw that clip of 90s RDJ before and he’s not wrong lol but What I appreciate the most about this deep dive is that it provides a woman’s perspective on this film which is few and far between on KZbin. Even though you are a baby person hahaha you’re teaching! Some other women’s reviews I’ve seen before are from deepfocuslens and The Take and they’re great but you’ve made the most comprehensive video on this film I’ve seen and I’m not bullshitting you! Hahahah Plus, I’ve seen a few of those filmbro reviews and they were more like character studies on Patrick Bateman which could go either way 😬 one thing they did I’m glad you didn’t was a reenactment skit of the card scene lol cringe. Yet, you used to do skits… Nah, I’m glad you kept it focused even with your funny cute moments during this video! This is by far the best video I’ve seen on this movie on KZbin! But one last thing, I find it hilarious that in this movie, Batman finally killed the Joker… IYKYK You rock maggot mommy!

It's wild how Christian Bale was 25 when the movie was filmed. Imagine the amount of pressure of having to carry a role like that at such a young age. I've always thought that everything in his apartment actually happened (except for killing Paul Allen), while everything else outside of there was in his head. It comes across as a bit of a reach that all of the deaths in Paul Allen's building were covered up.

Imagine if Bale had lost his cerebral cortex? He’d have to take like a year off of acting, to get back in shape. He had to have lost an organ on the Machinist.

1 thing i see people overlook is that Patrick is the son of the company's owner, Patrick is in the upper upper echelon of society so if he kills a regular worker like paul he's still more worthy cause he's in line to take over his dad's company so he'll get away with it.
@HauntedHippie

I mentioned that he was the son of one of the company owners. That was like a major point of my video haha although he and Paul Allen were in the same rank of the company, both vice presidents as labeled on their business cards

@@HauntedHippie i feel like paul actually climbed his way up and put in the work to get to vice president while Bateman is just riding the nepotism train. i think deep down patrick hates paul because paul is the 1 thing Bateman can never be, authentic with himself.
