How to Grout Stone Veneer

Жыл бұрын

The masons started grouting the stone on the house we’re building- it’s amazing what a difference it makes.
We used one part Type N charcoal-dyed mortar with two parts Type S to get the color we wanted.
They use a trowel to fill their grout bag, then twist and squeeze to get the grout to come out.
These guys make it look easy. I’ve done it myself and it’s a lot harder than it looks.
Once the grout starts to set-up, they use a striker or slicker tool to push the grout back into any voids and to shape it.
Next, they use a stiff paint brush to smooth it out and clean it up.
Finally, they go over everything with a big brush to clean off the stone and get rid of the crumbs.
We used a lighter color grout on the capstones because we didn’t want to draw attention to these joints.
They grouted this flat rather than concave so that no water would sit in the joint.
Here the column bases are all finished up. ‪@hausplans‬

If you know anything about stone masonry they broke many rules. These aren’t Masons, these are more like tile guys because this is all fake stone. I’m 3rd generation Mason please do not call these guys Masters !!!! This kind of work won’t even last a single generation, and they don’t even attempt to follow stone rules because none of them even know what they are. Just look at some of those long vertical joints running more than 2 stone. What a joke .

Yeah as a youngster I help build my fathers 10x24 garage. Which is normal brick work here. Then the grouter came. One man! And I asked him if I could help. So he actually kinda teaches me how to grout with a float and trowel. By the time he did one wall. I was just a quarter away on the other wall. I did a good job. And speed would build up he said. But it gave me a new found respect for these men. Cause my arms where killing me and he finished the garage in a day. If you want to learn and have respect. You’ve gotta try things like this. There is always someone that’s willing to teach you. Even if it’s just to show what their job is.

for any doubters, not only is Plateauman correct, but competent masons will repeatedly wet freshly pointed mortar allowing a longer, better cure especially on hot or windy days. the faster the water goes away, the worse the cure is. you can slow it down by wetting it. wetting the space to be mortared allows the mortar to form a better bond where it is needed most.
