Stone veneer felt intimidating at first, but by the end of it we felt like it wasn't much different from general carpentry. This was 300 square feet of area total, and took several days to cut and apply all the pieces - and we haven't started grouting yet :)

Three rules to stone. 1 - Stone laid so it's longer than it's height 2 - No more than 2 dry joints 3 - At least 1 yard between jumpers So, stones should always be horizontally longer than their height. The dry joint is where you have 2 vertical joints in a line, don't do a third. And a jumper is a large stone, keep them spaced away from each other. The closer you stick to those rules, the better your stonework looks. So if you see a good wall, look to see how it followed those rules.

Where you need to do a cold joint against dried mortar, keep a spray bottle of water. Spray the dried mortar before adding new.

That spider is a Western Spotted Orb Weaver. She is one of the best garden friends you can have. If you make them feel welcome, they will stay in the same spot in your garden all season ❤

Looking good! I really like the stone you selected. Going to leave my honest opinion; I personally would try to avoid cutting notches such as 24:55 in stone because it no longer looks natural. Regardless the whole project is looking great.

Thank you so much, we appreciate it! We found the stone by looking at new builds and contacting the home builder to figure out the name and brand. Turned out better than we were imagining!

To schools of thought, if your doing scratch coat you want scratch grab down so your spreading mortar up , but if your not doing scratch coat up

Seems minimal on wire fasteners. I am a retired brick block stone mason. As I said it seems minimal on the fastener pattern. Okay the I saw your statement about adding galvanized roof nails for more support and I think that was wise. Great job what I am seeing so far!!

Thank you! Yeah I talked about the spacing a bit at 20:03, I agree it's minimal but just trying to keep holes in the WRB at a minimum where possible. I'd be pretty surprised if it ever causes any issues but time will tell!

'A trowel of portland cement' I love it! I don't think I would have score high in my mix design class if that was my unit of measure. edit: Higher cement content will absolutely decrease porosity, and improve long term durability.

haha agreed, the older guys definitely like to do it by feel 😄 though for the grouting though they definitely knew it was important to measure exactly to prevent color differences!

Cold joint?? Sorry, you need to do the proper scratch coat behind the stone masonry. All you need to do after you apply the scratch coat you wet the surface, then you apply high strength thin set mortar before applying regular cement mortar and buttering the back of the stone veneer with the same high strength thinset mortar. It will be a proper bond and will there will be no “cold joint”.
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres 10 ай бұрын
It was pretty clear when applying how much stronger the bond was with all wet mortar versus the scratch and stick method. Different doesn't mean bad, it could mean better 😉

@@MasonDixonAcresNo, it does not mean better. Listen and learn, I know what I’m talking about. I saw the whole video. The workmanship of your stone masonry tells all. My comment is NOT intended as an insult.
