I think her style is pretty accessible to the larger, mainstream audience. (Especially young people, like you said!) That being said, I do think the conversation of “is it fashion or is she just skinny?” is also a good conversation to be had! Personally, I like Emma’s style, however I doubt it would have been considered as “influencial” if it weren’t on a thin, white woman. But again, I don’t think Emma ever claims to be a revolutionary style icon-she dresses in a way she thinks fits her best and crosses her fingers people don’t think she’s crazy. Lol, I dunno. Lots of food for thought.

thank you for bringing up “is it fashion or are you just skinny?” it’s an important conversation as a lot of current trends do not work on the majority of body types. I like Emma, so no hate whatsoever, and her style really works on her. but what looks like “effortless chic” on a thin petite person might look like frumpy or nothing on anyone else.

Usually people who are thinner look better in majority of the things. Having said that some clothes work better on more curvier women and might not look good on thinner women. I often think about the fashion vs skinny question when I see people doing yoga pants and sweatpants in these videos as fashion because when you’re fat if you wear things like leggings out of the house there’s a subconscious association with laziness and slovenliness. That work look is something you have to be skinny to call fashion.
@a_man_dine3 жыл бұрын
This explains it perfectly. I literally never wear sweats anywhere but home, because of the fear of looking not put together.
@dinacharlayne19123 жыл бұрын
it doesn't seem like pants. they're really for under a t- shirt or tunic or skirt or working out. it's not fashion. if it is naked it's not fashion or if it's like underwear. it's like underwear or something. you have to wear stuff clothes it seems like you get a chance to and they just wear under pants.
@wasisabi74393 жыл бұрын
Also the oversized pants with oversized shirt, when you're a bigger person it's way harder to pull that off
@C.ara3803 жыл бұрын
I think that in this situation(wearing leggings and sweats outside) it's more about comfort, rather than fashion. I mean I personally don't consider it fashion even if Kendall Jenner is wearing it. (who is a model and she is considered a fashion icon for many.)
@sarkataification3 жыл бұрын
@@C.ara380 sure, but if I wear that out of the house I get treated like crap and the associations are with laziness and unkemptness. If Kylie Jenner or a skinny person does it, it’s athleisure and lounge style, you know? It’s a fascinating dichotomy

On the note of "is it fashion or is she just skinny"...as a curvy girl I can attest that Levi's 501 jeans are only accessable to skinny people. They are cut very narrow and very straight. For reference, I'm a US size 10-12 (so roughly average) and I maxed out their size range trying to find a pair that would fit over my thighs and butt. Whether it's actually fashionable or not, I think we really have to acknowledge that a lot of these trends we're seeing from models and influencers are only accessable to skinny people. I think we also have to consider that with the 90s and early 2000s fashion coming back around, we will likely see (and already have) a return of the Uber thin body type in popularity and with that the rise of more clothing made specifically for that body type (looking at you low rise jeans). I think sometimes it's less of "is it fashion or she just skinny" and it's actually "she's allowed fashion because she's skinny". Just food for though. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
@bums0093 жыл бұрын
Yeah I tried them when I was the same size and tried them again now that I'm a UK 10 which is a US 6 to 8 I think? Even if the waist is the correct measurement, they never go over my thighs. It's not made for people with hips and thighs apparently lol
@chrystheo8083 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried these on but I'm also size 10 and I struggle with finding a straight pair of jeans that doesn't look distorted on me. Also, most of the jeans fit my thighs OR my waist. Since I'm on the taller side, most jeans aren't as high-waisted on me and crop tops are shorter, so I avoid wearing them since I'd have to expose more skin than I want to. I've seen some brands making tall fit jeans, but I wish they made those for dresses and skirts too. The curvy jeans they make actually fit worse than the regular ones. I HOPE people don't get obsessed with being skinny again because for most bodies, that's not a healthy weight. So many women were skinny back then because they were abusing substances and going on extreme diets. I'm not saying ALL of them who were skinny did.
@RachaelTheRed3 жыл бұрын
@@chrystheo808 oh my gosh, I had the same experience with the curvy fit! The only ones I could actually fit were the 721 but then I gained a little quarantine weight and they didn't have larger sizes in any of the stores for me to try on and didn't offer the larger size in the shorter length either. I mean, I could have gotten them hemmed but I was already frustrated and didn't want to deal with the hassle. I ended up switching brands completely because I felt like at a size 10 my body type wasn't a priority for them anymore. Skinny privilege is a thing. I'm really hoping that we have evolved enough as a culture to recognize that the skinny ideal that's starting to come back around is unhealthy for most but I'm not holding my breath.
@Ottilie173 жыл бұрын
Not in my opinion. i have W30 and in my country that is considered curvy and i have 3 pairs op 501 levi’s. They’re my fave and i have received a lot of compliments when wearing them. What youre saying about fashion in general i completely agree on. I really try to wear what fits my body best and only buy what i feel most confident in. Not really following the trends but i will buy something trending if i really like it. I would follow more trends because a lot of the time i really like them but its just not suitable for my bodytype so i have to be more ‘timeless’ (not really the right word but i cant put it into words any better) with the clothes im spending my money on.
@chrystheo8083 жыл бұрын
@@RachaelTheRed I don't shop from levi's or any pair of jeans that costs more than 20 euro really haha but yeah, in those teenager-and-20sth-targeted shops the sizes are until 44 european (so 14 US?) and... cmon, there are so many people who need bigger sizes than that. Imagine being fifteen and going there only to find you don't fit in their clothes. They used to carry up until US 12 before. When I had put on weight and realized that I'm wearing the biggest size in there I felt SO bad. Also, I was frustrated because I like some jeans to be more slouchy, but then I couldn't size up.

@Jury usually that's not what ppl mean when they say 'is it fashion or are they skinny?'. it's not saying the outfit isn't fashionable, but being skinny is unfortunately seen as an accessory that adds to the outfit. I think when most ppl look at what's fashionable, they are looking at the body being worn by the clothes, instead of the actual clothes. it's not that skinny ppl don't have fashion sense [cos emma does imo], it's that being skinny is fashionable. i think it all comes down to the objectification of female bodies tbh.

Ok, Luke. Am I missing some vid where you talked about this? Why don’t you like the Van Gogh LV bags? I thought they were cute, (and I’m kind of loving it as someone with an appreciation for art history) and tbh I would just love to hear your opinion on those bags and why you aren’t a fan :)

5:10 "The collaboration wasn't really necessary. Jeff made the bags but not the [painter name] or the Van Gogh" He said this so I think his reason is something along the lines of it being lazy design to slap something famous on a purse that otherwise has no meaning to this designer or the house
@BuilderBobda3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the idea of having an artist’s painting on your bag is cute, but well known paintings (such as Starry Night) can make it look cheap. They like to slap that painting onto everything for 50¢ lol It’s different when the artist does a piece specifically for the brand or individual bag. That’s a true collaboration whereas the Van Gogh one is not really. Gives off similar vibes as having mickey mouse on your bag; overdone, tacky, and cheap looking :/

I think she's following a trend which has been on the rise for years (which is fine) and has the resources to do it better than everyone else. So ppl look to her for her style but they already have it, they just don't have her budget etc. No shade on her but I think we give celebs a lot of credit for being "fashionable" when there's no reason for them not to be

I actually was very ready to judge because I don’t really care for Emma but I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty cool, not as basic as I thought it would be. Definitely a different vibe like Luke was saying and I appreciate that.

I live in Japan (Yokohama), and "a little bit Grandpa" is definitely a thing here with teens/young adults. It's cute on the right person, but it might be one of those "is it fashion, or are you just skinny?" moments.
@MissGourmandefr3 жыл бұрын
My stand on the is it fashion or ur just skinny thing: Your body line IS part of your appearance as much as your clothes. An outfit doesn’t have to fit every body type to be valid as « real fashion ». When you chose and wear your clothes, you need to take into account your body type. A same outfit could look amazing on a skinny girl = be a great outfit, and not fit a chubby girl and be a bad outfit…and VICE VERSA ! I sometimes see outfits that work sooo well on curvy girls but are underwhelming on skinny girls too!! The clothes can be simple - it doesn’t mean that the outfit is bad, it just doesn’t work on this girl and does on that girl,we’re all different !!! *A good outfit is one that fits and sublimate your body line and charisma, THAT’s ITTTT*

I completely agree, I think a part of fashion is wearing and finding clothes that are flattering to your body type and height.

Yess I see it this way too to an extent
@tunabarrett73843 жыл бұрын
I think you're missing the point a little bit. Nobody is saying that everything has to flatter every body type, and you're completely correct that different styles suit different body shapes. The problem is that thin people can "get away with" much more in regards to fashion than fat people can, and that's what sets the trend and gets praised. A thin woman wearing a baggy t-shirt and jean shorts is effortlessly cool, but a fat woman wearing the same thing is gross or lazy or inappropriate. A fat woman wearing the same things wouldn't get the same praise as Emma does.

What also plays into the equation is outfits on skinny women usually appear into mainstream fashion. They become incredibly popular and therefore stores stock these items because they will sell EVEN THOUGH they don't compliment and flatter plus size women, supply and demand baby. The fashion industry is built on skinny white women bc they are favoured as the 'ideal' body type, which is all fuelled by misogyny and the male gaze. A whole other conversation but ultimately is still very relevant.

Part of the thing with gen z fashion (like the platform boots w/ mini dress) is to embody the spirit of punk. Not necessarily the style, but that vibe of ‘yeah I’m wearing this with this. Yeah it throws you off.’ It’s a lil bit of wanting to balance out pretty femme and soft things with brute, masc and edgy things. That’s honestly what a lot of our generation considers a balanced look. It’s not even if it visually matches, we just like to have a little something ✨Extra✨
