THE IDOL IS A DEPRAVED FASHION MESS

Hbo Max's The Idol has come and gone thankfully, but certainly not without controversy. The show was highly anticipated as it would showcase Lily-Rose Depp as the star Jocelyn, The Weeknd as the cult leader Tedros, and would be directed by Euphoria's Sam Levinson. But when a Rolling Stone article dropped earlier this year alleging chaos and pornographic-level sex scenes, it spelled the end for the show. But seeing as the hype had been there, I thought I would try to watch it through, and I honestly regret it.

Objecting and being uncomfortable with the exploitive sexuality in a Sam Levinson show doesn’t make you a prude. It makes you a normal, functioning human being.

I'm speaking from complete ignorance because I didn't watch the show, but I absolutely hate her wardrove. It's so oversexualized even in situations where it doesn make sense, I bet even Kim Kardashian dresses mostly comfortable in her own house. Given the nature of the show some nudity has to happen and that's fine, but the execution just feels gross, as if the theme was just a superficial excuse to show Lilly half naked as much as possible. I'm sure there are women out there who enjoy dresssing sexy all the time (no judgement) but this is not a real woman, this is a creation made by bunch of men, and she is not the one choosing her clothes, a costume designer who is obliged to follow the vision of these men is, and in that case I am fully judging the choice of constantly sexualizing their main actress in a story that's supposed to criticize objectification of female artists.

I REALLY hate it when people say “I’m not a prude, but this seems like a bit much”, or something along those lines. Not wanting to see a woman in shorts with her ass cheeks hanging out, while a camera is up skirting her, does not make you a prude. Not wanting to see that shouldn’t need defending. And even if it wasn’t “prude-ish” to say that, so what? I’d rather be a prude, what whatever the hell Sam Levinson wants society to be.

I totally see what you mean, usually I'd feel the same but I think he repeated that because he wanted to convey to us that the nudity and risqué outfits would not really warrant mentioning if he felt it served a purpose, if it *actually* provided social commentary or was to make a **fashion moment** happen. Rather, this movie was just an excuse to objectify a few of the gals.

while I agree with you, you know that legit criticism of such over-sexualisation will get dismissed with comments like "don't be so old-fashioned" or, of course, "don't be such a prude". so I think most pre-emptively say they're not a prude to take fodder away from people and comments who wish to derail the conversation.

I feel like Destiny is everything Jocelyn could have been. Her outfits were sexy but put together, showing that she was comfortable in her skin and knew her power. She wasn't being pushed around by the industry and instead was taking advantage of it. I wish we could've seen more of this kind of character arc from Jocelyn, considering that I feel as tho her outfits become more thought out and stylistic than nudity for nudity's sake, so it makes no sense stylistically for her to go back to tedros??? anyways we stan Destiny
@sxt4447
@sxt4447 11 ай бұрын
My qualm with the fashion choices for Jocelyn comes down to the source of inspiration- Britney. If Britney inspired the concept for the show, I’m not seeing it. Britney wore nothing but sweats and comfy clothes all the time everywhere she went off duty. What a breath of fresh air it would’ve been if we could’ve seen more of a contrast between Jocelyn’s on stage looks versus her pedestrian clothes when she wasn’t working or just lounging around the house. But do we expect Sam Levinson to consider adding some realism or depth to this character? Of course not….
@nevaminddd
@nevaminddd 11 ай бұрын
Shes supposed to be the ultimate popstar that would exist today. Britney is a comparison because her costumes were young, revealing at the time and made for dance/being bodycon. So they took inspiration of her impact and intention of dressing. And we dont see Jocelyn "off duty" much. Even when shes at home she wants to stay in character with Tedros clan living there. She still wants to look like a star compared to them whilst feeling/looking free.

I wish they had done a bit more with Jocelyn's hair. The limp beachy waves in almost every scene were just not doing it for me and I think a bit more variety to the hair would've added a lot more visual interest to these looks. I also feel like her makeup could have been a bit more bold and experimental for someone who is supposed to be a world-famous pop star and maybe it would even have been fun for her to continue to reference early Britney with her makeup.
@MariaGonzalez-mt3px
@MariaGonzalez-mt3px 11 ай бұрын
they don't look like beach waves, i think it's rather a worn out 90's blowout maybe? with the front pieces covering her forehead, i think they're trying to hide it... they used hella hairspray to keep it in place especially when she's in the car, it looks dirty and dry. it could have worked for some scenes but not the entire show. and i agree completely about the makeup. she looks AMAZING in red lips and it would def suit her character. a pop of color and shimmer would have helped considering how blue toned and dark some scenes look but i understand that's the director's style. even her big comeback stage look is... dry.

that and the same makeup in every episode shows that they didn’t want her to be “stylish in a sexy way” they just wanted to sexualize her and show as much skin as possible (which in my opinion is kind of a missed opportunity to show a little more depth to her character and why she wears what she wears) sure, as luke mentions, there could be some reasonings or inspo behind the outfit choices but the main idea wasn’t for fashion porpoises, at least that’s what i perceive

Some of the outfits weren't even realistic, just gratuitous for the sake of filming. No one, not even a celebrity, is walking into an important business meeting in an outfit that basically only covers what a thong and (maybe) pasties does. So many of the outfits just don't match the characters or are atrocious stereotypes. The only character that seemed to have both appropriate and interesting outfits was Destiny, but even there, it's not like they were rewriting the rule book or something, just towing the line. Clearly they did not get the memo that fashion is an important part of storytelling and characterization, but I guess that would require them to have a decent story to tell or realistic characters to introduce us to, which uh... they didn't.

As someone who takes part in bdsm nothing makes me more uncomfortable than how commonly the media has started depicting choking as "sexy". It's becoming more common in sex because of it, but it's insanely dangerous. There's no safe way to do it, and even people who've taken classes on it and done it with their partner consensually for years have accidentally killed their partners doing it. Shows like this just depicting it casually and without any sort of warning only lead to more inexperienced people thinking they understand how to do it and that kills people. The "right" way to do it is never to put something around someone's neck like a belt, and covering a partner's face so they can't easily express that there's an issue is super dangerous. There was no negotiation, no safe words established, and even if they had all those things it's still incredibly dangerous. That scene alone is enough for this show to be genuinely dangerous because people will recreate it and that will lead to deaths. And for anyone reading this, if your partner has started choking you without consent you are 750% more likely to be murdered by that partner. Without consent that's abuse. The show doesn't properly go over what consenting to this particular act should look like, and having a partner casually do this to you without regards for your safety is a huge red flag. Please, if you have a partner who thinks they can do that safely run far and fast because they can't and their overconfidence puts you at risk.

Lol although that is funny, it does make sense considering it is a cult. You have a lot of examples of cults (especially here where I live, cults are honestly so normalized) having their members sleep together in huge halls etc., to encourage the "family" vibe-- it's a genuine tactic used to increase conformity and take away people's privacy and ability to escape-- it's a very covert form of brainwashing. I doubt Sam really thought of that tho tbh, they were all probably always together for the sake of plot (what little there is of it at least) and nothing else.

I think thats why they’re cult members. Tedros calls them “my people “ (no names) and in the last episode Jocelyn says: “they’re my people now”. Both view them as pawns, almost property. A big theme seems to be paying attention to people (treating human beigns as such) only when they can be useful to you. Stars, staff, cult members, everyone experiences being treated and viewed as tools.

One of the main things that made this character so unrelatable and hard to watch was the wardrobe choices. Who is scantily dressed or near naked 90% of the time? I’m pretty sure even pop stars wear a tshirt a few times per week. Sam worked overtime to make sure every single scene her outfit gave sex pot…even when she was home on the couch. Although I loved the outfits that choices alone made it hard to relate to/empathize with the character

I'm late to the party. My problem is not the nudity, but the sexualization of that. As a dancer (not professionally) I would say some dancers are very comfortable with nudity, in a not sexual way. When u train and sweat many hours a day, wearing many clothes is not very hygienic. That's why fishnet tights got invented. And because showing leg while dancing could get you arrested, and cops couldn't tell they weren't actual tights from far away. You also have to see the body to know that you and others are doing the moves right. Some dances are sexual, some are sexualized, physical closeness is just part of dancing and training. So you get used to it in your daily life, but that doesn't mean not owning t-shirt. I wish the show wouldn't sexualize nudity like that

I completely support your decision to avoid a second season if it occurs. Regardless of the INTENT of the people involved, the show presents a lot of really manipulative abusive behavior as acceptable. It is glorifying a train wreck. Even if you walk away from a train wreck, it doesn't mean the crash was actually okay. People are still permanently harmed by it. The scars remain. Yeah, the show included some 'Fashion', but the trip wasn't worth it in the end.

Incredibly interesting perspective! Having heard the show's reviews and commentary takes, I think this fashion story is actually more compelling than the story itself. It is cool that many of the themes that The Idol seemed like it was going to have is shown in these celebrity fashion connections and history. Thanks for the video, much appreciated.

I appercaite this break down. I am far more interested in the fashion of than the content of the show. I actually like Joss's overly sexual style. And I adore all the looks the big girl turned. That is so rare on any show. I didnt even know some of these bands sold plus size clothing. That said, Joss's make-up is consitently atrocious. Maybe its intentional but I didnt realize how pretty the actress actually was untill I saw the old runway photos posted in this video.

Loved the fashion review so exciting to watch and hear your theories on the deeper decisions behind them. I think you missed some of the plot. Jocelyn is revealed to be the villain running the show at the end of episode 4. We see she has only been allowing Tedros to think he was controlling her because she was okay with it, until she wasn’t she turned it around. She didn’t let him torture Xander, she ordered him to. She orchestrated his exit in front of the execs to have the facade they got their girl back, knowing she could win Tedros back at the end and bring him out on stage to spite her label who had been controlling her prior to Tedros. Not that it matters but hope it helps to explain the ending

I heard the first version of the script was more of an actual commentary/satire, where Tedros was just the predatory villain and there was no twist ending where the leading lady was secretly evil the whole time and the guy who abused and manipulated her was secretly the real victim or whatever. but the first writer got 80% through and then either quit or was replaced, at which point almost the whole script was scrapped and redone by the new writer with input from The Weeknd. What we got was certainly trash and not even the funny sort, but it was maybe almost good, we’ll never know.

They toe the aesthetic line of burlesque for much of it- I really don’t think the style of this show was such a big jump. What REALLY got me was hearing Jennie say “was she a better fuck then me?” Idk why even…. It was shocking to hear her SAY it even though it’s honestly so similar to her lyrics like this is “both my body and my bank account good figure” Jennie Like…. It’s crazy how blackpink sexy sizes themselves in their lyrics all the damn time but as long as the members never actually **talk** about sex or sexuality we can somehow ignore it? Idk somehow that’s the kpop boundary for innocence or whatever

Luke!!! This show was so half baked and weird but I enjoyed this video honestly I’m so surprised and also really loving the fact that the stylist chose so much small LA brands as Jocelyn touched on the fact that she represents and feels home to LA as a local. Also when you said that one of the joeclyns lace dress looks like spider web, I immediately thought that Jocelyn was in fact the one that’s luring tedros into the exploitative industry. In the end he is in fact trapped in to this abusive relationship. She captures him and eats him up. Sort of makes sense as she was evidently so much more experienced and aware of her surroundings than him as a literal senior figure in the entertainment industry.
