By nearly every measure, our children’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Investigative journalist Abigail Shrier is the author of Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up. Abigail and PragerU CEO Marissa Streit discuss how the mental health industry has put an entire generation of young people in distress by convincing them they have unresolved emotional trauma and need therapy and medication. She explains what parents should be aware of when they send their kids to school-or even the pediatrician.

Best advice I’ve been given as an adolescent: 1. My mom - You cannot control what others say and do, but you can control how you react to it. 2. My dad - You don’t ever use the words “I can’t”. You fall down, you get back up, dust yourself off and push forward. Only you can hold yourself back. 3. My grandma - God is good all the time, even when life isn’t. 4. My grandpa - Facts don’t care about your feelings. You adapt to survive; sink or swim. It’s your choice. 5. All of them - I will not always like you, but I will always love you.

I wish someone would do a study on the teachers and administrators. Even conservative ones. In my experience, these trainings the teachers are forced to endure are also changing their brains and giving them this savior complex. The teachers (especially in low income areas) feel like every kid isn't loved and they have to "save" them with love. I feel like these low income teachers have it the worst and are more brainwashed into thinking all of this stuff.

Most teachers I’ve had don’t care much about students so I don’t know where this misinformation is coming from. I’m going to assume you’re not in school which is why you are misinformed on this.

@jacklaker1939 My experience comes from teacher friends and family and having conversations with them. You are right, they say things that make me believe they don't care about their students much. But at the same time, they think of themselves as heroes. It's bizarre.

@@JessicaRJones24 yeah as a current student I can tell you the teachers absolutely do not have a savior complex. It’s kind of the opposite actually, a lot of teachers just give up on students and allow them to fail, which I do understand how frustrating it must be to teach when half the students are being disrespectful.

@@jacklaker1939she isn’t “misinformed”. I watched this go on while my daughter was in middle school with social emotional learning going full blast. We are in a school district in Ohio that gets free lunches for ALL students which means our schools are considered low income. The teachers literally felt like they were the ONLY ones giving time, love & emotional support to kids and that the only thing that mattered was what the teacher thought and parents were stupid. They basically were ALWAYS looking for a problem with a kid and then allowing those kids to feel like victims or unloved. Just because you may not have experienced this doesn’t mean it isn’t happening or that someone is misinformed.

This issue was warned about in the 90s. I remember reading an article that had the line "if Tom Sawyer was alive today he would be put on meds". That hit me so hard. My classmates were being therapized into losing childhood by academics who invent problems to solve. Sadly, I see no sign of this abating.

Was the pathologising of childhood behaviours not kind of inevitable when we all decided we didn't like all those old horrible ideas like "sin", or "being naughty", or "discipline"? We let ourselves off the hook with alcoholism and fornication as adults, privileging personal gratification over all other considerations. In removing "blame" we infantilised everyone - kind of hard to train children to exercise agency if children are now taught agency doesn't exist and that that they are no more than the helpless, innocent playthings of powerful societal and historical forces.

Let's go deeper. All children have the right to know who their birth parents are and their heritage. We need to know what our people went through to get us where we are.

A TEACHER. I saw for myself 300+ comments on reddit saying they will straight up lie and keep secrets from parents. The "reasons" were all kinds of imagined extreme scenarios that would make them saviors. It's horrifying.

I was struck by Abigail’s use of the term “we”. She says “we” did this to children. She shoulders the responsibility of the current trend in dealing with children’s emptional distress, rather than saying “they” are doing this to children. This is a mature person’s response to a societal problem, not to point an accusing finger at others, but accepting responsibility and discussing why this situation exists.

When the children need to exercise more. Children in Britain were taken off the drugs or the drugs were cut in half when children walked to school. Exercise. There is less exercise at schools. It’s seen as unnecessary and disruptive. Look it up.

37:49 great talk, but Parentification doesn’t mean “some responsibility” it means a real role reversal of all or most of the responsibility put on child and no power. Some responsibility is great. Like most words, they are loosing meaning.

Experts rose to prominence due to specializing. Specializing is skills developed in one small area. I prefer generalized knowledge. I would rather a jack of all trades but master of none, those folks know their limitations. The specialists start to believe they are experts at everything.

Part of the problem is that our government is like a giant fountain of money. The schools, the therapists, the doctors, the educational materials publishers (like Merrick Garland's son-in-law) and the pharmaceutical companies are all getting a lot of money for this from taxpayers money. Of course they will continue as long as the funds flow. It is the same with gender transitions. We need to cut back drastically on government spending and make government smaller.
