Chris Harris made a good point on his podcast a few weeks ago..... The sweetspot for buying a car in the UK was around 2016-2019 when the cars still had a decent sound (less emissions restrictions) and way less tech that just detracts, and distracts, from the actual driving experience.

I ran an E90 M3 for 3 years and 45k miles. What a car and what an incredible engine. It screamed all the way to the redline, click for an upshift and go again. I went all across Europe, over the Alps and track days at the ‘ring, Spar & Imola. That car was an all time great Machine. If BMW have given up on their weird design language I’d consider one. If it truly is a new E90 M3 I’ll be first in line at the dealers.

As a former F87 M2 owner and a brief owner of a G87 (before I sold it for a Porsche), I completely concur. The G87’s driving experience is best described as insanely proficient - which isn’t necessarily what I want from a raw sports car.

I recently drove an M2 G87 Auto (along with an M3 Manual & X5M) on a drive day. The Tech is a little frustrating when you only have a short period of time to explore the Car, but overall I enjoyed driving it (Tech would be easy to sort if you owned for a couple of weeks). The longer wheelbase / suspension was great on crappy roads compared to my 1M's shorter wheelbase and rock hard suspension (especially over sharp road imperfections). I was a little worried it would ruin the fun of my 1M, but fortunately it didn't, it actually made it more enjoyable, being a Manual and more analogue. I think they are both great Cars for a wide variety of reasons. Long story short, I have recently paid a deposit for the forthcoming M2 CS. Would prefer it if BMW offered this in Manual (very unlikely) but I'd happily live with the ZF 8 Speed Box.

Hi Rob you are correct about tech in cars when I bought my 7series you can book a two hour session so that things are explained to you at the end of the time even though it didn’t take two hours I had forgotten a lot of it An example of what I would never use 1 self driving 2 remote parking where you can stand outside your car 3 self closing doors 4 remote starting so that you can control the heating and when you get in it’s warm things that I have never even tried doing plus all the other bits and bobs some useful others not so

Thank you for this video. As a matter of fact, i personally decide where to spend my money and what car i drive. I will never ever buy a car with all this creepy, useless and stupid technology iniciated by people who have no clue of driving. So i do, and many of the people i talk to are too, do buy older cars. A few of them, older cars and let the car industry build cars no drivers guy ever wants to buy. What an annoying and insulting paternalism to must drive such cars... and a shame for the car industry who do not any more build cars the consumers want

I'm glad your big complaints about the M2 don't apply in the U.S. The speed-limit warning and lane assist are off by default and do not need to be defeated whenever you start the car. I assume that BimmerCodes could recode your U.K. car permanently (or at least until the next dealer service).

Hold SET on the steering wheel for a few seconds. Overides the Speed Limit warning on BMWs. Lane departure will be in the shortcut if you keep turning it off It is technically a detuned M3 because of the chassis and drivetrain.

My thoughts, this is meant as constructive criticism but personally I don't think the world needs another car reviewer who either only spends a day or two with the car, or feels qualified to pass judgement without researching things fully first, there's enough of that already on this platform. Great video in general, good camera presence and presenting style, loved the drone shots etc but the problems with the above are here already, all of your major complaints with the car are presented as dramatic issues (I don't know your personality, you could just be a dramatic person for show) but people who know the car well are telling you they're not big problems at all. And conversely, there are a number of things which are very irritating that you just won't see or appreciate unless you've lived with it for a few weeks or more. Example, the fuel tank is only 50 litres. I'm still in the break-in period so I can't go over 4k RPM or drive flat out, and even now I'm only getting 230 miles max from a full tank. That'll probably drop to 150-200 miles from a full tank once I've had the run in service done, which is pretty shocking even for a M car. The MPG is what it is, but the fuel tank really should have been bigger than 50 litres. I still can't quite wrap my head around only getting 150-200 miles from a full tank. The iDrive screen doesn't show the total number of miles which is frustrating when you want to quickly glance at it. The default HUD in road mode is awful, it doesn't even show what gear you're in. The centre console buttons around the gear lever are very poorly designed and positioned, they're flat gloss plastic with no tactile feel to them. This means you have to completely take your eyes off the road down towards your left hip to press one of the buttons, which is super dangerous for very obvious reasons. When you first get the car you assume you'll build muscle memory for it, but you'll never be able to just place your hand there and feel for the button you want to press because it's all one single flat surface. The leather used on the seats is awful, the door cards look and feel like Fisher Price made them, there's barely any storage for putting your wallet/keys somewhere. There's only 2 USB ports and they're poorly positioned. The brakes are good but the amount of brake dust they spew out onto the wheels is quite excessive. There's very little in the way of quality-of-life conveniences i.e no shopping bag hooks in the boot or USB ports/chargers in the rear... I could go on and on and on but these are the things which can irritate you more when you own this car than a bong for speeding. These are all minor complaints though and wouldn't put me off buying one, most of them come part and parcel with owning the 2 series platform. But I respectfully strongly disagree that this is a stealthed M3, the G87 is far off the 3 series platform and you're reminded every time you sit in there that you've chosen to buy a cheaper 2 series platform. Overall the car is outstanding though, and imo it's the second best car I've ever owned with the best being a F83 M4 convertible. That was in a different league to the M2.
@karolmaciejewski340Ай бұрын
Almost all (minus leather quality)of the cons you mentioned are valid also for M3 and M4 G8x, btw there are shopping bag hooks in the trunk of mine G87

I just sold my G87 M2 after 11 months. Picked up a Cayman GTS 4.0. The M2 was simply too aloof. No steering feel whatsoever, and worse yet, the steering felt artificial and video game like. The brakes were strong but soggy, the handling was great, but again, no feel. The engine was stonkingly strong, but had oodles of lag, and boring sounds. Overall, if I wanted a fast personal cruiser, the M2 is it. For an "M" product, it is lacking. Add to that, a tachometer you can't see, electronic gremlins and bugs, and a million ergonomic issues. I've owner all gens of the normally aspirated M3s, and this is a major letdown

I think you’ve nailed in in a sense, new cars are obviously amazing with all the tech, safety etc but, the soul has been ripped from them and that soul is from us, the driver, I also get before the eco minded have ago that they are cleaner, surely though manufactures must realise that we are buying older performance cars and spending huge amounts on restoration, general repairs, fuel etc, why can’t they have an option why the tech is not in the car, just basic equipment with a simple clutch, engine and display?

all new cars sold in the EU must have advanced emergency braking systems, intelligent speed assistance, emergency lane‐keeping systems, driver drowsiness alert and all sorts of other tech. but were not in the EU i hear you shout so although these laws may not apply in Britain car manufacture's will not make a special model just for us with this tech left out so welcome to the world of all new cars. where you have a shit load of very expensive tech that we struggle to turn of and don't want but we are made to pay for it in the cost of the car
@thegreat_cornholioАй бұрын
And there lies the problem. We are not "made" to pay for it. It's a choice. All the time punters are willing to splurge that kind of cash on 4 wheels, the manufacturers take that as a nod that the punters want all that tech. Stop buying and they will soon think again. You wouldn't keep going to the same restaurant if they kept on serving dishes you didn't want!

@f1shf1ngers24Ай бұрын
You’re missing the point. The M2 is a smaller and more rewarding sports car than a bigger chassis variant. All the models are aimed at what a particular customer is looking for. The F87 m2 is arguably the best m car to date harking back to the original smaller and raw m3 of the 2000s. New M3 is a saloon also. Just because the number infront of the “M” is a digit higher doesn’t mean the car is better. The 1M is also in the top of the m car classes. These newer G platform cars you are better with the smaller cars for fun and performance not an m3 or higher unless you want more practicality.
@johnstape4488Ай бұрын
@f1sh your point is smaller and lighter is better but that's WHY the new M2 sucks, it's literally a chopped down M4, it's huge and weighs 1800kg. The 1M you mention is the last good m car (f series M2 has epas)
