I tried this also and the difference I saw with mine was after washing a few times. The shirts I did with sub paper definitely lasted longer then the one I did with copy paper. I didn’t try laser paper but the one that I used all purpose copy paper on wasn’t wore at all I just washed it over and over with my Reg laundry to test how the color would stay. But I’m glad you put this up for the world to see. It would be ok if your doing designs just for yourself not a business.

Your able to dye sublimation using dark t-shirt using hallmins copy paper?
@KaoticIntentions19725 жыл бұрын
@@jessicaspeakman3909 I think that's kind of an asinine question. Of course you can't directly sublimate a black shirt using copy paper. You also can't do it using anything that doesn't resemble printable vinyl like subli-flex 202. We've run hundreds of tests with just copy paper on white shirts and the copy paper actually does produce better images than sublimation paper.
@RibbonsPink5 жыл бұрын
@@jessicaspeakman3909 You can't just sublimate onto dark fabric without using some sort of transfer like EasySubli or something. Sublimation uses the fabric or light fabric for basically the base color. If you sublimate onto black, the black is the darkest color and you will not see anything other color because the rest will just fade into the back. If you sublimate onto a yellow shirt your colors will blend with the yellow, so you may end up with green instead of blue. Sublimation does not cover the color but goes into the shirt fabric.

sublimation printer or regular ol' inkjet printer?
@radicalrick95874 жыл бұрын
@@KaoticIntentions1972 Well, of course, it does because more heat can pass through the thin copy paper better than the thick Sublimation transfer paper and as we know Sublimation ink works better with more heat that turns it into its gases state and not only that but the thin paper will press closer to the fabric than a thick transfer paper would. Again making it a better way to transfer Sublimation ink into the fabrics. I can see the advantage right out of the gate. I'm glad I learned of this before I bought Sublimation papers by the crate load. Saving a small fortune.

I guessed the same after reading about the laser paper with Infusible Ink. I was wondering why laser and it was cause it stands up to the heat required for sublimation. You're absolutely right I learned this by mistake I left some plain paper in the printer and didn't realize until I pressed it and it came out just the same
@hugogeerdinck3255 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm a sublimation paper company guy, so not without prejudice. I know that it's all about the end result, and that in your case you don't see much difference. However, the copy paper was more permeable: the ink that you see on your protection paper, has eventually not landed on your substrate. For any easy blue design without much ink, the difference is hard to see. We see it in industrial sublimation for fashion industry as well: as long as you don't need a wide color gamut, and don't need sharp images, and only use low ink amounts, and don't try to do skin colors, an uncoated low grammage paper will give you the possibility to make your product. When you need HQ sharp lines, and deep colors, like cocacola red you definitely get better results with sublimation paper. If you print 20.000 tshirts and optimize your color profile while using the right paper you can eventually save more money. Ever calculated the inkprice per liter? What surprises me is the very long transfer time you use. You can at least go down to 30 sec. You will see that the sublimation paper only needs 30 sec, and a copypaper needs more time. If you both transfer them for 60 sec, you let another advantage of sublimation paper disappear. Time is also money! Sawgrass really calculated for you for each papertype and substrate the optimum ink amounts, for the right end-result in color. I hope you used for the different papers the same color profile in your driver to be sure there is the same ink amount on each paper. You can make a similar movie and show the big difference between sublimation papers and regular copy papers. Try buying a package of the new JETCOL DHS, and choose in the virtuoso print manager the matching profile. Choose a sharp test design with perhaps a nice tanned face in it and transfer it for 30 sec on a polyester shirt. Do the same for TexprintR, use the TexprintR profile in the VPM, and you will see that although both are dedicated sublimation papers, they already are showing a difference. The Jetcol paper is giving a deeper colored image, while your SG400 used 10% less ink, which you will see after printing a few dozen shirts. My comment is only to tell that your (simple) test shows an acceptable quality that fits your designs and products, and if you can work with copy paper, of course you should save yourself the money. But if you gonna do chromalux plates and need sharp images, matching skin colors, or tshirts with deep blue and red colors, you will need the right paper. We've NOT been lying to you. That's short sighted. Different coatings are developed for different kind of inks and printer/ink combinations, color calculations are made, drying speeds and transfer yield of ink is optimised, reproducability is tested and guaranteed... Copy paper is optimised for fast sheet feeding in copiers without static electricity jumping from the paper to your copier, whiteness, and toner-adhesion for durability of your prints. It is just a different paper for a different application, and yes, cheaper because it's not a specialty, but a commodity that is being produced in huge amounts.

hugo geerdinck I tried using copy paper. Yes, it works, my design was merely grey scale (pencils) and it did transfer well and has been washed a few times already and it still looks good. Here's the actual kicker. The copy paper is either too thin, or too permeable, so if you press the image, the image will attach itself to your press, and the next time you press something, a ghost image will be on your next job. If you use thicker paper or a top sheet, you are still spending more money, or wasting more paper, so it's a wash (no pun intended.) I had seen this video and wanted to try it, but it's really not worth it, unless you run out of sub paper and have an emergency.
@ransalex6775 жыл бұрын
I heard that you'll use much more ink by using a copy paper. Maybe that's why she had a lot of ink transferred to a protecting paper??🤷♀️If that's the case, than you lose money, because the sub ink isn't cheap.😊

Excellent post Hugo. I totally agree. You get what you pay for, no question. Back in the 90's comedian Chris Rock once said 'you can drive a car with your feet, doesn't make it a good idea'. Just cause it could be done, doesn't mean you should and one shouldn't expect the best results. What end product do you want in the hands of your customers a shop should ask themselves. If a shop can't afford the few extra cents to deliver a premium result they should re-evaluate their pricing strategies. If they don't the reputation on the quality of their work will take the hit soon enough. For in-house testing, sure use the cheapest products you can, but don't pass that to your customers.

Happy Birthday Betsy!!! Oh yes, I agree 100%! You can use copy paper and it works perfectly fine. I also agree that the copy paper test looks a bit more vibrant. I wanted to get into sublimation since the NBM Charlotte show of 2018 where I got to see the Sawgrass-400 printer in action and was awe-struck! By the time I got to the Conde' booth to see it, I had already overspent on equipment so my plan was to go back this year armed with knowledge from my research about sublimation. I did get the sublimation pens at that show that they told and showed me can be drawn onto plain copy paper. This made me think, 'why can't I use regular copy paper with the printer'? I didn't know it at the time but it was a blessing in disguise. My good friend had heard about the Epson WF-7710 being converted to a sublimation printer in one of her groups so she tested it. Well, it works GREAT and I started sublimation for $225.00! That is less than the Sawgrass-400 alone! The price I paid includes the WF-7710 printer, CISS system(continuous ink supply system), 400ml of ink, 500 sheets of 11x17 Hammermill copy paper, 110 sheets of sublimation paper, 4 rolls of heat tape, 200ft roll of butcher paper, sublimatable 10pk of keychains and 10pk of puzzles. Sawgrass uses a gel based ink. This test is going to be more successful with an SG printer. If you use an Epson you will have different results with the plain copy paper since much more of the ink is absorbed into the fibers of the paper. The Hammermill she uses is 24lb paper and will likely still work fairly well with an Epson. One more test worth doing is printing on all three papers and letting the prints sit for a week or more before pressing. One of the concepts of coated paper is that the ink is not absorbed into the paper but lays on top. Quality paper printed with quality inks should show no degradation over reasonable amount of time. I can't say for certain you will get better or worse results but I would like to see the results. And to the people saying this changes everything, in Sublimation if a $.30 sheet of paper is your sticking point on cost when you are spending about $1500 just to buy an A4 sawgrass setup not including a press, then you don't understand how to price your easily customized, simple to make work. If you are not gang printing and/or aggregating sales so that you can gang print then you need to take a closer look at what you are doing. Something that is large enough to take a full sheet of A4 paper should more than make up for the $.30 sheet of paper when you sell it. On the flip side, you can print 4 coaster prints on one sheet making your cost per print a HUGE and clearly unmanageable $.075 each. If you can't absorb that on a coaster, then you are simply doing it all wrong. You'll use more than that in tape and packaging material when you ship it.

Exactly on point with cost. Paper cost is the least of my concerns. I preprint a ton so stuff is ready to go. I also print and ship transfers for others. I have used prints a year out with no issues. I doubt the same could be said for copy paper.

DhSpaded do you have a video on this?

I was told it has to do about how many times you can wash the garment before you start to lose the image, it would be interesting to see just how many washes it does take. 😊

I spent a lot of money trying "sublimation" materials with a Ricoh printer and did not work. Still have the printer sitting on a corner. Better results with regular inkjet printer with heat transfer paper on cotton shirts.

Has to be at least 40% polyester material, 100% better. If you use 100% Cotton, you need the sublimation spray off Etsy for the colors to come out right.

Happy birthday! Wow! That is pretty cool. Makes wanting to get a sub printer more affordable when you don't have to get the sub paper.
