Quick FYI. The opera pink is gorgeous but everyone needs to be aware it is a fugitive color and will fade, so is Moonglow. A UV protector can be sprayed on, as well as framing under UV protecting glass. If it's a sketchbook painting that stays closed in a book then of course it doesn't matter if it's rogue or not. I do love Daniel Smith and this set is super pretty! That granulation sings to me. I recently purchased a DS dot card and loved swatching every color on it.

Beautiful floral piece, Bettina! I’m so happy that you decided to get this DS set of tubes! I did some exhaustive research, looking for single pigment paints, and decided to upgrade to this set with some holiday $$…and so happy I did! I’ve added to my tubes when I get a little mad $$, and never looked back ;) I’ve put mine in palette’s, with one for the Primatek collection (LOVE!). My palette’s have large sections and the smaller tubes fill them twice. They remain super easy to reactivate with a squirt of water, and a little goes a long way. There’s no comparison to my “bargain” dry pans set! I cannot recommend them enough. I can’t wait to see more content of you exploring your’s! Congrats on moving up to a fabulous new experience with your DS tubes!!! I love your style and your art!!!

You should buy the dot cards so you can choose exactly which colours you like before investing. I always buy the half pan or 5ml first just to be sure and if I use it a lot I will then invest in the 15ml tube and I then squeeze into a half pan which gives me lots of space to get my brushes in there! I'm glad you are finding supplies which you love! This turned out beautiful as always ❤

Opera Pink is a fugitive color - meaning it is not lightfast. That being said it's a great color to mix with. I love Daniel Smith colors. Moon Glow is exclusive to his line. The Green Apatite Genuine is from his PrimaTek line made with mineral pigments. I got the Daniel Smith dot card. Great way to try a bunch of different colors so you can choose the ones you really want.🌸

I have some of those DS colors. I love working with them. Compared to the Winsor Newton Cotman set of metallics I just purchased, I'll pick DS colors all day every day.

I have most of those color that I've bought separately at one time or another, and since I really like granulating colors, the cascade green and lunar blue are big favorite of mine. I don't normally use bright, splashy colors, but I will put a dab of that pink in washes with blues, turquoise and purples, and it dries pretty light and adds a nice surprise. 😄 (Instead of the tube of pink, I got the Daniel Smith stick.) After you've played with it a bit, you might find that it's something you go back to time and again. Or not. lol

Awesome video. 👍 I've tried various brands of watercolor paint (not cheap craft brands) with different price ranges. The biggest difference, I've noticed, is the pigments and the amount of pigment they contain, obvious with how much lighter they dry. I bought one Daniel Smith and was impressed enough that last month I bought all the colors. I haven't even swatched all of them yet (there's a lot) but enough to be able to say they are incredible. Expensive perhaps for some, but a little goes a long way, so I expect they'll last a long time. Edit: I will still use other brands for not so important pieces, such as in art journals for example, and pieces I just want to scan.

I have only three DS colours and they're all in this set - Undersea Green, Green Apatite Genuine and Moon Glow. They are gorgeous colours. I like the look of Imperial Purple and may have to invest in that one after seeing it in your beautiful floral piece. Thanks for an informative video.

The only wasted painted is the painted left in the tube . (Not painted with) I have all these colors plus i have every green and blue . Blue greens are My favorite. I love DS. If you let them dry in half pan or palette but if your using them wet from them tube that is wasting them. Takes a day or two before they dry out and then you can use them . I use a tooth pick to help shape and get bubble out. Humid places may take two days to dry out. Arches paper to me if the best if you use a lot wet on wet, i buy it from Micheal’s w 30 coupon so wait and stock up and get for $15 a pad instead of 24 . My second favorite is the pad you’re using. I buy the 15ml tube because they cost twice as much but you get three as much. But the 5ml you typically get 3 half pans. So you dont need to buy the the 15. I like your swatch because you show the light a dark. Some people dont show contrast. Nickel azo yellow is supposed to be rare color that can cool and warm. Not sure is that watercolor myth ….great video !!!

If you gently squeeze the bottom sides of the tube the paint should go back into the tube.

pink is incrediblly useful for mixing with greens, to avoid straight up tube greens such as sap green. I learnt this from artist Yuliya P. Wish I could afford this box. I only have the DS essentials 6 tube.

You can use them! If you wind up with crumbs, maybe get some empty full pans so that the crumbs are easier to collect (easier than in half pans).

I think someone else said it. Squeeze some or all of each tube into a palette with a lid and let them dry, the re wet to use. I’ve had my tubes ( I use DS too) for over 2 years now and they are nowhere near finished.

If you are going to take your paper off the block to paint you might as well buy the pads instead. It’s cheaper and it won’t have the black edges.

For 5 ml tubes i know. Note that with 5ml tubes, you will fill 2 big half pans! I saw at DeSerres half pans kits in metallic tins of Daniel Smith at a very good price if you wish to start a DS collection. There is a 12 half pans and a 24 colors half pans. I think the 24 is 160$ CDN which I find quite reasonable. Personally, I bought them individually (5 or 15 ml tubes) over a period of time. I had the opera pink from Windsor and Newton. I just miss the undersea green but it is a mix I make with my WN Ultramarine Blue PB29 and their Quinacridone Gold PO48, PY150. This Jean Haines palette is awesome.
