Do you think Ian knows where every morsel of food he puts in his mouth comes from? Do you think he knows where every scrap of fabric he wears is made? How many people being critical of Qatar can claim they've never benefited from the exploitation of labour?

@@tagcoriolis1029 That argument means flagrant violations of conscience are acceptable because no one is perfect. That doesn't work. I could say to you, 'So you have never criticized someone for something you do on a smaller scale?' It would be a silly way to try a silence you. You can still criticize their behavior and people can assess your criticism of them without regards to your behavior. If you think they are being hypocritical, that is an issue separate from their criticism of his participation in the World Cup for money.

Ian's got a history of calling people out. Not the least of which-- and most famously-- was Boris Johnson. He actually seemed somewhat less eager to do it this time around-- but then, "What the hell do we do about the Middle East" is a question for the ages. (You'd think "send them guns and bombs, sometimes active upon receipt" would have gotten checked off the list by now, but... apparently not.)

I thought this was quite a good episode. They've tended to use the same hosts over and over of late, but I always liked the crap-shoot of trying different people. Maisie Adam is someone I've previously found dull and annoying, but she was quite funny here. As for people commenting on Ian having a go at Gary: (1) That's what Ian does, get over it; and (2) I'm constantly amazed at people being all for human rights as long as it doesn't affect their iPhones, shoes or sports. The Qatari's know that all they have to do is throw money at people and they'll cast their morals aside. Everyone goes on about slavery that ended 150+ years ago, yet get strangely quiet when talking about slavery that is happening right now. You just know some idiots are going to get arrested during the World Cup, either for inappropriate behavior or protesting, and the Qatari rulers will eventually pardon them and all the idiots will go "aw, look, these slave-trading, slave-holding, anti-democratic despots aren't that bad." because yay money.

Got to hand it to Neville, there’s no way he didn’t know he was going to get shredded and he came on anyway. He has a point, his reach is orders of magnitude higher as a commentator than it would be if he stays in the UK and criticises Qatar. Yes, he’s doing it for the money, but maybe we should see whether he actually uses his platform as he’s promised here to do before we slap the hypocrisy label on his forehead. Hislop never spares people who deserve it, as Neville does, but it’s not out of malice. It seemed to me more a warning to Neville not to forget what’s expected of him when he gets to the World Cup as a famous person who’s spoken out on these topics before…. Not to squander his opportunity. [Edit: magnitude, not multitude!]

If these people had lived and worked in Qatar for a year they'd have a much different viewpoint, or at least a nuanced one. Foreign workers bring 100's of millions of dollars a year to their home countries in S. Asia, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. People who'd have no chance of earning almost any money at home At least 1.8 million of the pop. of Qatar (about 2.3 million) are foreign workers, mostly from developing nations, many of whom raise families. You'd be more advantaged to speak Hindi than Arabic in much of Doha, since a sort of 500 word English is the most common language. The deaths of foreign workers are a scandal and easily avoided if the Qataris wold simply put A/C into the trailers they sleep in, where they often get their heart attacks.

Not sure what Neville would achieve calling out Qatari human rights abuses on a broadcast for foreign audiences, other than a shallow exercise in virtue signaling undercut by his own complicity. The Qatari government probably wouldn't much care, because domestic audiences will just see the prestige and vindication of international participation.

Was this guest host invited on merely as a set up - knowing Ian would more than likely go for him? I agree with Ian's stance but it this the right venue? Pretty shitty treatment in my book even if good for click bait. Not exactly a level playing field - was it!

From what I recall the show has a 30 year history of doing that. Those guest can expect it when they sign up. It's part of what they have to do to promote whatever they are selling or to get their appreance fee. Kind of like Nevermind the Buzzcocks, they would often book someone just to get shreddered for "fun".

Gotta say I think Ian is barking up the wrong tree here. The Qatari regime has been using slave labour for decades, yet all western regimes invest heavily in doing business with them. Nothing will change if Gary Neville goes there, he’s there to do a job, and he’s been very critical of FIFA allowing this, which in his situation most definitely requires more guts than sitting in a panel show and ask someone to follow one’s own morals. The questions should be asked to leading politicians instead: why is doing business with these regimes something that’s encouraged? Why can these regimes use English football clubs and other business in England to wash their names? Why is it ok that the UK buys huge amounts of gas from Qatar? In the last couple of years none of these regimes or our endeavours with them have been questioned by anyone but a bunch of leftists and football fans who might be jealous of Newcastle and Manchester City. You absolutely can go there to do a job and still be critical of the regime. We have to be able to keep two separate thoughts simultaneously.

Being critical of the regime is all well and good, but if Gary is going to take their money he needs to either shut up or accept being called a hypocrite whose principles are for sale. Politicians take heat for dealing with Qatar all the time, even though they have to deal with the Qatari government as part of their duties, while old soccer players do not often find themselves in the same position. Ian had a chance to call out a hypocrite and he took it.

@@missingsig what happens to gary neville doesn't matter to me the least. But it bothers me that when it's football, it's fair game to blame everyone who cares, but nobody cares about the underlying issues. The problem is our trade and other mechanisms that normalie these countries. It's a much bigger issue that most western countries pension funds have huge ammounts of money there than the fact that football is being played there for a couple of weeks. As far as i'm aware Gary Neville has been speaking about these issues for a pretty long time now. As far as I know, nobody else on the panel has, especially Ian. But the one who's at least spoken about it is the one who's getting hanged. And sure, Garys response isn't great, but i think this focus on blaming just the world cup and the people involved with it while not caring about the other issues is ignorant at best, but at worst, (and more likely at that) dishonest.

6,500 migrant workers died working on this freak show. Or does that not bother you? And that`s just the start of this money grab on an international sporting event by a corrupt FIFA who do buisness with the devil himself and tell the football fans to turn a blind eye and not bring politics into sport. Human rights is at the forefront of every football fan all over the world and this non event that starts next week will be pissed on by real football fans and all those who would normally tune into or even get on board such a huge global event, but this is not a normal World Cup. FIFA need to be completley dismantled and reinvented with a dose of intregty and decency who are tuned into the heart and soul of the beautiful game, proper football heads.
