1992. I remember the earth summit. We all had this weird feeling. What did we call it? Optimism? Hope? Whatever it was it disappeared faster than polar ice cap.

After many years of watching and enjoying present and historical episodes of this great show (especially those with Angus as host), I nowadays find it hard to endure more than few minutes because of Paul Merton's innane and trivial inputs. He is like an only child whose parents over-indulge him by letting him just speak up whenever he has some thought-bubble which will draw attention to himself and get a laugh for its immature wit. I am amazed that audiences and viewers find him funny at all. His shtick is sooooo tiresome, predictable, and self ingratiating-- not to mention unfunny. He has turned me off watching any more. Farewell HIGNFY.

Merton is exactly as you say, a petulant attention-seeking child of a man. He rarely laughs at other people's jokes, he is constantly wanting to outdo everyone else, he can often be seen nodding when other people are being funny, as if to make it look like he was also the instigator of the joke. He even takes the 'game' so seriously as to question who gets the points and is often looking for bonus points. His constant berating of Angus and anyone who might make a grammatical error is bloody annoying. I find myself fast-forwarding through his bits as he is unbearable.

@@Smudgie Fully agreed. But what puzzles me is WHY he is so popular; what sort of people like his style of shtick, that faux seriousness and emotional disengagement from the joy of others' humour. Yeah, I know, each to his own re comedic appreciation, but he spends soooo much time actually FACING AWAY from the focus of the game, ie other people, looking blankly at some invisible mirror of disinterest.

@@thedolphin5428 No idea sorry. I never understood why you would want to work with someone who you clearly despised. As Paul does Angus. Or why the Beeb would think it made good telly.

@@Smudgie because what he says is quite frequently quite funny. Why are we talking like medieval poets here? Oh yeah, the BBC thinks it does ok for quite a few decades now. here is a slim chance that they might be on to something.
