I saw the 1999 eclipse in Salzburg as a pre-teen, and to be perfectly honest what I got a much bigger lasting impression of was Salzburg itself, especially the historic garden we viewed the eclipse in front of, and the torrential rain that came at some point during the day. Not the eclipse itself. Most of what I remember of the eclipse is the faffing around with the viewing equipment. 😅

We still have the Planetarium of Eise Eisinga in the town of Franeker. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Because of all the superstition around the eclips of 1744, and vicars preaching doom and the end of the world, he felt inspired to built a planetarium in his living room and his wife let him ! Still more impressive than the eclipse in real life. Because it visualizes in beautifully painted wood all the movements around the earth. Still working and accurate ! Greetings from The Netherlands.

I’d point out that it’s standard procedure to put new batteries in each time you use a Holter or other long monitor, even if the batteries still have lots of energy left and it’s a surprisingly large expense because of volume - whilst it’s a small expense for each individual patient. So it is a simple way to save whilst having minimal impact on patients.
@GildedmuseАй бұрын
Yeah, but it's a strange, you have to admit. Like.... it would be cheaper for everyone getting a shot to bring their own needle, but if you're doctor asked you to do that you'd be majorly suspicious.
@willemm9356Ай бұрын
In that case, I assume those patients then get to take their still-mostly-full batteries back home?

Thanks for the weekly lift! If only American culture had the facility with the language and sparkling wit! We could really use a show with this degree of intelligence and fun. (I totally share the desire to see the extended versions along with the standard 30 minute ones. But this is way too delicious to postpone for even a single day!)
@GildedmuseАй бұрын
I mean, we have the Daily Show. It's more like the Mash Report minus it's more absurdist segments, but still. I have noticed that American producers seem interested in the panel show genre, they just do not seem to have figured out how to capture it and translate it for American audiences. Which is strange because one of the panel shows they tried to bring over was Taskmaster and as far as I can tell, the British version of Taskmaster works just fine for American fans (in fact, I think part of why it failed was simply that people who tend to watch a lot of overseas shows simply expect American versions to suck. Because when I watch it alongside other international versions, the biggest change they made was going from a longer program to a 30 minute slot. That definitely effects that show's pacing as well as how many tasks you get - and it just gives us less time to get familiar with the contestants which I think is an important aspect of the game - but otherwise, it wasn't THAT different, and yet you would think based on reviews that they took the took the title card and then the whole show is just someone taking a dump on screen for 20 minutes. They also tried Would I Lie To You which.... at least I can understand why they would want to make an American version of that, since a major element is knowing the celebs. It's not entirely necessary, but it definitely helps to clarify some of the jokes and stories. Again, they did a real middling job, like it wasn't horrible but it was no where near as enjoyable as the original. They shortened it again, I believe, and also changed the tone slightly (the tone in American TM was also somewhat different, however, every international version has a slightly different tone; I feel like the tone is really set by the Taskmaster even though he's the person with the least screentime.) I don't know if it could have been successful if they'd advertised more or made it more internet friendly, but it's a shame that yet another awesome program failed when brought over. Right now, America's best Panel Show is "After Midnight", a Panel Show that doesn't realize it's a panel show. Seriously, it keeps calling itself a game show with no prize meets a talk show without a point and I'm like "yes, you have described a panel show". Still, despite not knowing what they created, it does seem America is really trying to make this panel show thing happen.
@beth12svistАй бұрын
@@Gildedmuse I think a big part of the problem with American Taskmaster, and why Taskmaster fans almost universally hate it, is the exact nature of the different tone it picked. Or rather, I might say, the lack thereof, going hand in hand with the shorter runtime. There isn't that much of the banter in between, the more lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek feeling of "we're just being silly and the points don't really matter" that makes British panel shows work, and that makes Taskmaster work in different countries even with a slight tone shift. It kind of lacked cohesion in that department, so what came out most strongly to the viewer were the nasty bits and the competitiveness, and no one watches Taskmaster for true nastiness (one would hope). A good deal of the charm is also that very often at least some of the people involved know each other and how to riff off each other, and the American version was also rather lacking in that respect. P.S. And, to clarify further, I do think a good deal of the blame may lie in the choice to make it so short, and that maybe editing out too much is largely to blame. It doesn't flow smoothly, genuinely funny remarks that might be iconic in another version don't have enough build-up and just kind of sit in vacuum, the awkward moments of Alexisms don't get enough time to be actually funny, et cetera. It creates an overall awkward feeling that these people who agreed to do a silly show never let go enough to actually be silly.

To be honest, this is a unique combination that has become a cherished tradition. It only just survived, The BBC tried to kill it off 4 years ago. They almost succeded.
