Well presented - nice one but i think you should've presented some statistics so we can gauge if this is a problem or not. . Some key metrics needed here. Population % of people bitten by otters / annum. % of households with outside fish ponds and % of people with outside fish ponds attacked by otters / annum. Estimated number of otter growth in Singapore? I think you will find the above %'s so so negligible that it just isnt an issue. Versus % of population bitten by a dog on a leash vs % of people who lose their fish because their water pump failed (those fish need oxygen pumped into the water or they die). In Singapore if you can afford an outside fish pond then you certainly can afford a creative solution to protect your fish pond (without impacting the aesthetics too much). I see the otters almost daily on my runs / bike rides along the river and gardens by the bay area - they are such a great image for Singapore as it tries to rebalance nature. Is it really that hard for humans to adapt? or do we just remain self entitled at the expense of nature.
@123-h5i5y Жыл бұрын
Otters are meek creatures? Appearance cute and cuddly but they are vicious predators. They eat their prey alive and kill even when they had their fill .Thats why most of the fish ended up dead, half eaten and not eaten once they raid a fish pond or fish farm as there is no chance of escape.

There are many, many, many, many, best-practices and lessons-learned, world-wide, that address similar challenges (e.g. re-introducing predators into areas where there is animal agriculture), that one can adapt solutions from. Those lessons are useful notwithstanding the fact that (1) otters in were not deliberately re-introduced in Singapore, (2) the land-mass of Singapore is constrained in comparison to the many other examples around the world where these challenges involve more spatially extent areas. Human-wildlife conflicts are not new: they have been around for as long as the human population and expanded and evolved land-use. Let's not re-invent the wheel: learn from the NGOs (e.g. World Wildlife Fund, UN Global Environmental Facility, etc etc etc) that have sponsored many projects around the world, and adapt those solutions for the Singaporean context. Takes $$$, of course, but there's a inherent value of "ecosystem services" afforded by thriving human-natural systems that we ultimately need to pay for.

Sorry but the lady saying the otters are robbers is such a victim playing move. Like nah, the otters just doing what they do in the wild. Maybe you should consider putting up the fence as suggested or just get some other pet instead of fish that cost 20k. You have more than enough to flex on everyone else. 20k is literally the annual salary for lower income earners, some even lesser. There is no need for us to do anything drastic with the otters just because you want to have a fancy aquarium. It is not a necessity. 99% of the country does not have a problem with otters. No reason to deal with the otters for such a small fraction of society that are inconvenienced by them. Instead these people's mindset needs to be changed. If you want to own expensive fish then you take the necessary precautions. Going back to the robber analogy. If I had a 20k diamond necklace. I am certainly not going to put it out in the open with minimal security just because robbers are not suppose to rob. They are not suppose to but are going to if you make it so easy for them.

When people hurt the otters, they got punish by the law. When otters bite small children or joggers, they said people must learn how to live with otters, don't provoked them and so on. But for me, one must not forget, these are animals, they don't have rules to follow. They follow their instinct. They don't abide by territorial boundaries. They roam around anywhere as they want and marked them as their territories. And they attack you just because they feel threatened without you even knowing they are around. Unfortunately, while we love these animals and try to live with them, they are not capable of doing that. Face this reality!
@sleepyheadz Жыл бұрын
Yes you are right. We have to face reality. It is precisely people as human beings can self regulate that we do not descend into beasts. Beast only know to retaliate. Human beings is capable of much more. But when we refuse to become more, we are no different to beasts. Humans have the absolute power to kill and destroy any other creature. But do we do it just because we can? Being human means we are measured and considerate of our role in caring for people/creature/things around us. Something no other creature is capable of. Unfortunately, we are observing the degradation of human being-ness in the human race, especially in highly affluent urbanised colonies. The over consumption and disproportionate abuse of both people and environment has led to our increasingly dysfunctional state of being. That is perhaps, the inconvenient reality, we need to but refuse to face.

Education is key when it comes to co-existing with wildlife that is native to our shores. All of them are a part of the overall ecosystem. Funnily enough, the only component present in today's world that is not critically needed for the natural ecosystem to function is......humans. Moreover, we humans are the ones encroaching into their natural habitat when we develop land for urbanisation. It's only right that we should think about how our development plans would affect nature and wildlife that's dependent on that area and think of ways to protect and provide for them. For now, retroactive action needs to be taken to restore what we have already taken from our native wildlife. So that not only means the otters, but also includes any other native species that now roam free among us and have had incidents with humans.
@PP-vf1kx Жыл бұрын
🤔 nobody criticised human for breeding uncontrollably 😏
@sleepyheadz Жыл бұрын
You are right. Education is fundamental to understanding ecosystems. But perhaps there are too many uneducated educators? Maybe? How do we measure co-existence? Does co-existence mean zero conflict? How do we manage conflicts? Or do we even have the will to manage conflicts if it cost us inconvenience? Has our education taught us to believe that everything revolves around human beings as the center of the universe? Unfortunately, our education has perhaps not taught us how to think. Our education has taught us to produce perfect answers but has not taught us to ask good questions. If we don't know how to ask reasonable questions or even worse, ask bad questions, we will ultimately produce perfect solutions to terrible questions.

An eye for an eye. We are not animals anymore, this is how law and order come for humans. An eye for an eye. This is why a human mu*derer is put on d*eath role. Human k**** Human, the judge is Human the police is Human ... My point right now is we are evolve enough, and we are humans, we should have more understanding towards animals and nature, and not towards selfish acts

Good luck singaporeans living in a city but actually living in a zoo

That's a very good zoo. Cats dogs monkeys boars and otters. Let me know if u would actually pay money to visit such a zoo.

Not the otters, they are just doing what they do. Those out of control are those People managing them, allowing this to happen. Same logic with People with Pet dogs. Train the Owner (people) and the dogs will be in control.

It's all the Koi's fault! If they didn't ask to be kept in artificial ponds, then all these grievances would not have happened and everybody will live happy ever after!

Anybody else thinking that the otters are facilitating the passage of the koi prisoners to a better life? Fish🐠Heaven or reincarnation as free animals?
