All due respect, Sherpa is getting on and where his legs will weaken his balance will change as will his eyesight. My pup who last until he was 17.5 years lost hist abilities like seniors do. He wants to please you. I recommend that you meet him where he is. He doesn’t seem stressed. He accepts where he is. He’s happy. Although sleeping on the damp in your yard can’t help his arthritis, but he loves it and why would you keep him from that. Hang in there. This is the hardest time for humans. Just remember he’s happy. He’s not noticing the changes like you are really he’s not. He has you. He has his favorite food. His best sleeping places. Animals live in the moment. They don’t wallow in the past. Hang in and just keep doing the wonderful things you do for him.

Yeah, we've certainly purchased ramps, steps, bedding of sorts food, etc to help elderly pets in the past. None of ours ever traveled as much as Sherpa does so that huge accommodation was never a forethought. I love that Jamie does that for his lovely Sherpster.🤗

@vinawaldren6888 I have a cart and lots of vitamins and medication and I gave her shots every month (I am a nurse)... she was the happiest at home. So I stayed also at home... but now she passed away, my male dog... an exploded rat... (chihuahua x chowchow.) He comes everywhere with me. And if we go somewhere where he can't come, I have a wonderful dogsitter... she comes 2 times a day. In the morning to pick him up and late in the evening to bring him home. In the meanwhile, she goes with him for long walks, to the beach, to the park, and at her place... he is having a wonderful time. It cost me 25 euros... but it is what it is. But most of the time he is coming with us...

Jamie I hope you’re not doing this because of the Trolls. They’re just miserable people with miserable lives. And no matter what you do, they’ll always be miserable and nasty. JAMIE I HAVE A SUGGESTION! HOW ABOUT GETTING A CHEAPER, HIGH TOP CAR AND THEN ADD A LIFT ON THE REAR? THEY ARE USED OFTEN FOR WHEELCHAIRS. SHERPA CAN JUST STEP ON IT AND BE RAISED UP AND WALK INTO THE VEHICLE. LATER ON, WAY DOWN THE LINE, YOU CAN ALSO SELL IT. YOUR THE BEST DAD ANY DOG COULD EVER HAVE AND IT'S GREAT TO SEE HOW MUCH YOU REALLY LOVE HIM. BEST OF EVERYTHING!

Jamie, try reaching out to auto shops that work on conversions for vehicles for those with physical disabilities. We all know you're a resourceful, genius handyman/Jack of All Trades. But, they're awesome at solving difficult issues and reconciling comfort and safety for all who ride in the vehicles. No doubt a shop would love the chance to help Lord Sherpa, and his peasant chauffeur, ride in comfort. 💜 Bit of unsolicited advice, mate. At least I didn't mention your hair...

Yes! I was thinking the same thing. And there are vans out there that are already configured to fit a person in a wheelchair, with a built in ramp and full length lowered floor. If the height of the windows is all right for Sherpa to look out of, it might be exactly what Jamie needs. They are called WAVs. There's a company called Jubilee Automotive Group that has several models available. I clicked on one model: 2017(17) Indium Grey Metallic, Rear Wheelchair Access Conversion, 3 Seats + Wheelchair Passenger, Full Length Lowered Floor, Fold Out; Store Flat Ramp, Powered Access Winch, Wheelchair Securing System, Air Conditioning, Bluetooth Telephone, Central Locking, Electric Windows, Overhead Storage, Rear Privacy Glass, Heated Front Windscreen, Multi Function Steering Wheel, Rear Parking Sensors, Tyre Pressure Monitor, 2 Year RAC Platinum Warranty with Nationwide Cover for private users, 12 Months RAC Roadside Assistance, totally immaculate throughout with exceptionally low mileage, UK delivery service, part exchange welcome, low rate finance. please call Jubilee Automotive Group 9am~6pm Monday to Friday and 9am~2pm Saturday on 0121 502 2252. The website also mentions that seats can be removed for additional space.

Jamie, sometimes there is no “answer.” Sherpa is changing and most of the time, he’s just going to go with the flow. The best thing you can do for him is accept that new flow and help keep his body and mind strong. You matter so much to him, so try not to stress too much. Easier said than done, I know. But he can sense your stress as much as you sense his contentment.

He loves your company. Am certain that he and you together will manage well with the car you eventually decide to buy. The Volvo, with two years servicing, sounds great. You should, I think, just be pleased at how hard you try, have confidence in yourself, and all will fall into place. Sherpa is happy; you must be too, otherwise the circle isn't complete! 💕 💕 🐾

Jamie, remember every day your darling old boy will deteriorate a little. We found with our old girl, in the end going out in the car was to her pointless. She told us (!) she liked the warm and coziness of her bed at home, all that jogging around in a car wasn’t her way of loving aching joints. The jumping up became a lifting up. I notice the difference too, in Sherp’s Librela injection. Don’t forget as the four weeks progress they slip back a little until the next injection. I don’t envy your quest in finding a car but what you’ve looked at are smart and pray it works for you.

I had a rescue Golden Carson always went with me except to work. I ditched my Honda Accord to buy a Toyota van. He was able to get into the back with a ramp. I took the middle and back seats out and put an orthopedic bed back there. He could see out of the windows and he was not in pain. I lost him when he was 15. I know what you are going through. Like Sherpa he was my best friend. ❤.

Listen I took my dog shopping I was buying a new car and needed a 4 wheel drive for work (I’m a nurse and need to get to work in all weather). I went thru everything online and my one neighbor suggested to bring the dog to see how he would fit between front and back seats. Well I went to the dealership left my dog in the car on the lot. I loved the car said I would buy it but needed just one more thing to check out-the space between front and back seats. Car saleswoman says yes I bring out my BamBam-a 210 pound Mastiff to see if he fit and he did quite comfortably. I bought the car and BamBam was thrilled. So I get where you’re coming from. 😂😂😂 Good Luck

I can speak from experience and HIGHLY recommend the XC 90. As you said the warranty and safety, you can't go wrong. I own an older XC 90 and just love it. Great road car. The running joke at my volunteer fire station is that if I am ever in an accident, I will be fine, sitting back drinking a cup of coffee telling them to cut this, pull that and remove the other. They are very well constructed, but because of all the safety features, they can't be opened with a can opener and it does take some effort, but I will be fine. Hang in there Sherpa.

Had some steps built and new railings, had the existing railings altered with another metal spindle and another gate lowered so she can't squeeze under. Never thought about how much it would cost because it needed doing. Thankfully I met a fabulous builder and iron monger who have done a great job at a reasonable price. It’s great seeing Sherpa up and going on walks. My Wife and I had two malamutes and three samoyeds and always in pairs over a 30 year period. We lost of lasts Sammy named Harry in 2018. We both love watching your videos and feel for you and what you are currently going through. As for vehicles, I don’t know if they are available in England but check out Toyota Sienna’s minivan. Our last malamute was born with orthopedic issues and needed help getting in and out of the vehicle. His size was an issue. He was a male giant malamute and weighed 130 pounds. We kept him on the lighter side due to him issues. The height of the floor in the van is 20 inches so lifting him in was easy. He could get his front legs in but couldn’t get his rear legs in just like Sherpa. All we had to do is lift his rear end up into the van. Also the van has a lot of space once you remove the removable seats. When you add another 95 pound male Samoyed and not overweight , he was just very big for his breed standards. They both took up a lot of room. Also there is no foot wells to step down into which help getting them out. Over all the van has been great for the dogs and us. Best of luck in your search for a vehicle and give Sherpa a big hug and kiss from the both of us.

Mr. Jamie, while watching I had the idea… could you perhaps purchase some very dense very firm memory foam to fill in the gaps between the front and back seats so it’s level with the bottom of the inner door frame. Something firm enough to hold him but soft enough he’ll be comfortable if his fluff hangs off the side of the seat a bit. Lol. I think it’s be a better fit than trying to make a wooden platform with a million curves to fit in that slot. Just set your seat where you like it and fill in the gap. 😁👍. That way he steps right in and it’s just a few inches up to the seat. Your doing great! Was very happy to see you learned the proper techniques to physically pick him up when needed 👍 that’s unfortunately going to be necessary moving forward. From a former single husky dad to another. And we didn’t have hydro 10 years ago so I just had to give her back legs stretches and support her back end on days the arthritis was real bad with a sad long harness that went around her belly for support. You haven’t mentioned it but If he’s not having too much trouble supporting himself while squatting to poo that’s a good sign that his sciatica isn’t in too bad of shape yet. If he’ll lay on his side and let you massage and gently slowly stretch his back legs without a fight.. there’s a lot of videos of techniques for older dogs joint relief. But I seem to remember he’s not the cuddliest of boys. That was s lot of words sorry. But yes fill in the gap in little red or whatever you replace it with and I think Sherpa will find it easier to step up an in. ✌️🍻

That's what I did for my German Shepherd/ Malamutes when they aged (mom dog made it to 17). Filling the footwell up to seat level and lifting her in solved the problem. Also using a long wide scarf under her belly just in front of her hind quarters allowed me to support her on our walks when her hips started getting wobbly.

You should consider making a platform over the seat, I did this on my last truck for my dog. No worrying about falling off the seat, and gave him a great platform to stick his head out the window. Just cut up some plywood and 2x4"s, it will cover up that deep footwell (you can also remove the rear seats entirely). I used the area under the platform for storage! win-win! He was soooo happy sticking his head out the window all the time.

He could store the ramp under the seats. I would suggest also removing the passenger's seat and putting down a platform where the seat used to be to make it level with the door, then no stepping down before having to step up to that new back platform.

Hey Jamie, my last dog was 50 kg, quite a bit larger than Sherpa. I had for years strapped him into the front passenger seat of my Honda, but he got stiff when old and couldn’t turn around and face forwards. I was driving around with this giant dog head in my face. I had to put him in the back seat in one door, open the opposite side window to let his head out, then get him out the other door. For Sherpa, have you considered a wheel chair lift for the van? You might have to redecorate the interior, but Sherpa can easily get in and out of Big Red this way. And I think it’s a lot cheaper than buying a new vehicle. Just a thought, I’m just a stranger in a different country and I love the old guy, so I understand what it’s like to take care of his needs.

Hi Jamie, you mentioned about the step down into the footwells behind the front seats. That is fixable, construct an infill and fix a piece of carpet on the top so it just raises the floor up to the level of the door sill. That would make it alot easier for sherpa to get in and out.

Jamie, consider the Honda CR-V . Room enough for Sherpa to sit on the seats (would recommend putting seats down) for more comfort with a cushy pet bed. Good gas mileage, good mechanically .Had one for 15 years, I maintained it well. There is one more option that could be added to back of CR-V, a handicapped lift, smallest they make. Seen one that folded up after use. Sherpa walks on lift, you push button and up he goes. (Might want to keep hand on Sherpa) , not sure what noise the lift makes. As Sherpa ages, handicap lift will benefit you too, less strain on your body. Easy to transport him to Vet if ill. What ever you do for a handicapped/elderly for transportation applies to Sherpa (Lift).

I take a deep breath, here. I had a corolla matrix 4 door. My little Cairn terrier mix loved it. It was HER car and i was just allowed to drive her about. When she past, i traded the car for a reg corolla. I couldn't take the memories. The only way to know what car works best is for Sherpa to try it on. If the dealership allows it. Here in the states, they dont care. Our used vehicles are called certified. Anyway, for someone who had a car just for her fur baby, my child, i say, im behind you 💯. I could barely afford it, did without, but Lilly was comfortable, could see everything. I was happy. Good fortune Jamie. And yes, curls need a trim, but you'll get around to it in time. Cheers.

Hi Jamie! My concern with the Volvo is that when the seats are down, there seems to be a lot of gaps and holes that Sherpa’s paws could get into. I’d hate to see your beautiful boy get injured because of this. If you go with the Volvo (or any car with the same situation), please consider some sort of mattress or liner to cover the gaps! Love, kisses, and belly rubs to Sherpa!❤

Jamie I understand your being concerned about the depth of the foot well for Sherpa. You could build or have someone build a platform that fits inside the foot well and brings it up to level with the lip of the foot well. That would make it easier for Sherpa to step inside and climb up into the boot. This would give you peace of mind and give you more options in the vehicle you purchase.

The Volvo XC90 is a big and lovely car as you said. I love it. I had thought about that brand before but as you mentioned that Sherpy enjoys to travel in the wind I thought that you only looked for a convertible. Moreover, I also thought that in the UK Land Rovers were not expensive as they are British cars. The X Trail is also very beautiful and looks comfortable. So both options would be suitable for Sherpy. On the other hand I'm glad that Sherpy is feeling better. Cute and sweet puppy.☺😘🐕❤❤

Our Mal, Jack, needed assists during his final year. We opted for a two-part harness for easier lifting. The top, front end can be used solo, like any regular harness with a handle. The rear end also with handle securely clipped to the front and was VERY useful the last couple of months. It was called “Help ‘Em Up” harness. Don’t know if available in UK, but very well made, easy on/off. He will be gone 2 years in July and I still feel his presence in the house. Took about a week to get him used to wearing it. Love and hugs from Newfoundland, Canada.

Just a suggestion from a woman in America who just became a senior. Im trying to think outside the box and wild. Lol. Sherpa in my opinion is popular and so loved and I myself have been watching his channel for years, So I am thinking there might be a Sherpa fan in your area who can agree to help come up with a creative idea to help Sherpa now and will help him as he gets older. Something that someone is willing to do in trade for advertising or time on the channel as they work on a one of a kind Sherpa approved apparatus. The outcome would be the creators get credit for making it and even making it cost effective, that others can possibly get for their fur family when they get up in years and wo be needing assistancetoo. So, in thinking from a human senior for a fur senior. This may be a start to an idea/creation that Sherpa can endorse to help with what he may need in the future with vet bills, medication bills and the overall cost of helping Sherpa live his best life in comfort. I know there must be things out there but I am sure they are way expensive and Sherpa may just be able to help create something people can afford for their pets. I have a Chihuahua and Yorkie who are easy to pick up but Sherpa is a big beautiful boy.

Jamie, have you considered a London taxi as an alternative choice. They have a spacious passenger compartment that has an easy entry height and very wide doors actually designed for wheelchair access but ideal for you to lead Sherpa aboard and make him comfortable. The only stumbling block I can think of would possibly be the height of the rear seat from the floor, but I’m sure that you would be able to install a sub floor and you could easily remove the partition screen so that you can easily reach around to Sherpa. Failing that would you consider a previously used car that has been adapted for a disabled passenger to use with a lowering floor.

You can get fillers or just fill the footwell behind the front seats and then cover the whole back seat area of the mini with a comfortable piece of orthopedic mattress for sherpy to lie on. Hell have more are,a, be more comfortable and still have the security of being able to lean against the back of the seat and not struggling to stay upright with the turning motion of the car. Like he would have in a large open boot area..... You would both just have to adjust to him being lifted into the car, front feet first then back...... Would this not work Jamie? I am a dog walker and have to make the most of the room available in my car. I fill the passenger seat footwell to extend the seat so that a can fit a dog there and I have 10cm thick mattresses in the boot to keep them confy 👍🏻👌🏻

I live in the mountains of Idaho & take my 8 yr. old Lab mix with me everywhere. I drive a Nissan Rogue AWD which has been great in snow & ice. I have left my back seats folded down which gives her from the back of the frt. seats to the rear hatchback. The rear seats on all cars are higher than the frt. seats. That's so that the rear seat passengers can see over the people in the frt. Thus it is harder for any dog to get into a car using the rear doors of a 4-dr. vehicle. My dog is a typical Lab & a little chunky with age. She has no trouble jumping into the driver's seat & then into the back seat area via the console/armrest. She usually prefers to ride in the frt. passenger seat where she can see better but can go back & lay down whenever she wants.

Sherpa loves who he is, who are we to say no for a car so that Sherpa will be more comfortable, but Sherpa is happy in what he does, but eventually time will take it’s toll on his body and there is nothing you can do to stop it, you might be able to prolong it but it is going to happen. Elantras might be good for Sherpa. My hubby had a heart attack in mine and passed away. The dealership was very kind and let me trade it for a Sonata. I loved both cars but as I am 73, the Sonata suits me (and its my favorite color.....Midnight Blue). My Ford Escape was nice but too big for a granny lady. It's windows would have been great for Sherpa and I slept in the back when hubby and I argued one night.

It has a big boot, fold down seats. And the windows were large as well. The only reason I sold it was because I can no longer drive. I traded it in for a wheelchair. As for the deep foot wells. Build a box to fit inside. Sherpa could then climb up onto the seat, hopefully. I know you will do what's best for his Lordship. Getting old really sucks wind.❤❤❤
