I have to tell you, Hoselink changed my life. I am 75 yrs old and they (one on front of house, one on back) have made it so easy for me to keep taking care of my plants by myself. I wish I had started gardening at a younger age, but I am loving it even if I am a bit on the slow side.😆 I have also been a copy cat on my augers and drills. LOVE the ease of using them ❤🦋 Thank you Aaron and Laura for all of your inspiration.❤🦋

Specialist is so expensive nowadays that DIY seems like the only choice. I just fixed my houses wiring, irrigation and my car by watching a lot of videos and reading forums. I even helped an elderly lady to fix her electricity, no cost. I am a specialist in a different field (many a $$$ of certifications and CPE's) and observed the old conundrum. Money vs time vs quality. What and when is it good enough? How much knowledge?🤗🇿🇦

I grew up on Lake Michigan sailing with my dad and mom. I had a healthy respect of water where some kids, who hadn't had experience around water, did not understand that water needs respect to be around or they could get in trouble. As an adult, my kids were used to being outdoors near water - they understand the safety rules because of their experience. Some of their friends (and especially parents) couldn't understand the dangers of water or climbing on rocks out on Lake Michigan. Water safety and outdoor safety became part of my inner language bc of my parents.

"Children need to do dangerous things safely." I've heard this recently and I have decided that this is wise. You teach them to be near water and in water-which could be dangerous-safely. The same, really, with anything. You are right to not let them be in a bubble.

The question about keeping a garden journal caused me remember seeing a story of an old barn. The owner drew a basic map of his garden/yard on the wall of the barn. Drawings with Name, date planted and location of trees and major plants. I’m talking, about a hundred years ago! That wall now considered “folk art” and a family treasure! So wonderful for family to see❤❤

Roflol Laura!! Hahaha when my oldest daughter was about 3-4 years old. I was in my room putting fresh sheets on the bed. My daughter walks past my door, backs up a second and says "I don't have nothing" lol. I said what is it you don't have? She replied, "I don't have your stapler". lol. She also always told on herself hahahaha. Small children are a joy and a source of amusement! I just love being around their innocent perspectives on life.

Yes! 50 years ago parents raised their kids to be adults. Example: at a young age they had them doing farm chores, cleaning, cooking, ect. They taught them how to be grown up when they were still little. Included them in all the activities. Nowadays they say “well, kids need to be kids.” Or “they grow up fast enough, let them have fun” and I think that is a real disservice to young people. They get stuck in their room playing or with a babysitter while their parents tackle the projects. I think I prefer to raise them as adults so that they can see the successes and failures and learn early in life how to handle them. Hard work is a fact of life and I think people will always find time to play so to me it would be more beneficial to include them in the big projects.

I think it shouldn't be either or. It should be both and. I worked hard alongside my folks and learned a great deal about life, but I was also given time to be a carefree kid. It was during that "kid time" I developed my imagination and independence, bravery and curiosity.

@zormier2002 oh no offense taken. I think you are absolutely right. Too many parents shelter their children from real life work, pain, and joy. They do them and our society a terrible disservice. I just thought I'd add my experience. 🙂 Sometimes, as a parent, it's tough getting the balance right.

I learned a fun fact a year ago about water. When streams come down mountains and meander left and right, this affects the charge of the water, and helps with aeration of course. And by charge of the water, I mean if the stream is bending one direction, the water gets charged positively, and when the stream bends the opposite direction, the water gets charged negatively. And it all has a balance.

Self watering pots do have their place. I was the horticulturist for the City of Rosemount MN. We had 60+ hanging planters and 45 large planters placed downtown and at several buildings. Watering those every day took ALL day for 1 employee including weekends. By switching all of those to self watering we were able to water the hanging baskets 2 to 3 days a week and the pots 1 to 2 days a week depending on temperature and rain. What a difference! It was the best decision for labor costs! 😁

SPF info: I was a cosmetic chemist before I retired and I manufactured skin care products. I can tell you that any SPF above 30 does very little. SPF30 blocks 97% and a SPF 50 only blocks 98%, SPF100 99%, the difference is not worth the expense. Higher is not really better. It is a marketing ploy to charge more money. also buy store brands because often they are made by the same company. I know from experience.

Laura and Aron, you spoke of mosquitoes in the South Garden and you still have the pondless waterfall. After the pond was completed you saw how it attracted dragonflies and birds that eat mosquitoes. The pondless waterfall could do the same thing and both of the water features will also attract bats at night that help to eat those nasty bugs too! The South Garden may need the pondless waterfall.

Dragonflies, which eat insects as adults, are a great control on the mosquito population. A single dragonfly can eat 30 to hundreds of mosquitoes per day. 12 ) Hundreds of dragonflies of different species will gather in swarms, either for feeding or migration. According to an article in Smithsonian magazine, dragonflies can eat from 30 up to hundreds of mosquitoes in a day, along with other insects. And this spring when we've had so much rain, it's great to see such a nice influx of dragonflies.

Laura, I'm in northern Utah and my koi pond depth is at 2 feet. I don't use a pond heater in the winter. I leave the waterfall running all year long and that moving water helps create air pockets under the ice. My fish have survived in there for over 12 years. Of course you should consult the professionals but my pond has not needed the pond heater.

Funny story (to us, at least): my SIL in Austin bought some very expensive koi for a pre-existing koi pond at their new house, and a few days later saw a great blue heron standing out beside the pond, gulping them down one after another like a buffet smorgasboard!

As I was watching you read the questions, I wanted to tell you all the answers you were unsure of!! I'm in my 3rd year of "Living the Aquascape Lifestyle"!!! It's an amazing journey, and you will love it! My pond is a couple of feet off my front porch. I wouldn't doubt you'll want one closer!! A cup of coffee and throwing food off the porch is the way to go!!! ❤❤❤❤

People need to try out long sleeve sun shirts. They are so cool and you don’t need sunscreen all over your arms. So great.

Thank you for your comments about a pool vs a pond. I would love a pond for the exact same reasons Laura does. It's pretty year round. We have an inground pool & it's depressing 7 months out of the year seeing it covered. Thank you to Laura, Aaron, Greg & all the wonderful people who created this beautiful oasis. ❤

I can tell you by the amount of videos that are popping up my my feed concerning your pond build.... it was worth it to them. I have watched all of the videos that the team made while on your build and I can assure you that just have "Laura with GA" in their title got them clicks! 🙂

I'm the same way about remembering the names of plants. When you love them, you just remember them. If I don't, I stick the plant tag in an area you can't see.

Our kids have always been around water. We love water sports. I agree it’s better to have them around things so they understand the fun around it as well as the risks.

I agree with Laura 38:56 a about the stacked stone edge between the gravel and the berm , it would really add to the surrounding area , more naturalistic...it would look awesome ...love everything that Aaron and Laura have done to their property 😊😊
