San Francisco was always a middle class neighborhood. Parque Omar, named after General Omar Torrijos, was the old golf club a very long time ago. As a teenager, it was mostly single family homes, before the era of the high rises. The main thoroughfare was Via Porras. Glad you enjoy the city of my youth!

Hi yes we thought that was formerly a golf course. It’s certainly big enough. As a park I love the mystical walkways with fairy benches and the gorgeous massive trees. I’ll bet you have great memories of Parque Omar.

I don't go to any of the malls in the Chicago area, and I didn't fly nearly six hours to visit a mall in Panama City. I've already made plans to head back in August 2025. I'll make it a point to go then since I plan to rent an Airbnb in the San Francisco district.

Reading about why expats leave retirement locations around the world and return home, reliable infrastructure & services are top of the list. In Panama you're either urban in the city or very rural (anywhere outside the city). Panama City is possibly a good place to start and spend a year venturing to other locations to see if it provides the necessities one is looking for before setting roots in other western areas.

Guys again with little technicalities. Paitilla Hospital is in Paitilla, not in PUNTA Paitilla, that’s the tip, the hospital isn’t at the tip, it’s just in paitilla (paitilla mainland), but almost… 😊 Love your videos ❤ Porque Omar, it used to be a golf club back in the day👍

UGH...sorry John. Never even heard of an area just called Paitilla by anyone. Thanks.
@juanluiscarbonepicard-ami53795 ай бұрын
It becomes punta paitilla when you go into the streets that go towards the tip of the peninsula. But the inner part where Plaza Paitilla , and Hospital Paitilla are, that’s not on the tip. So that’s just Paitilla. The name comes from a place in Peru called Payta,,, back then during the Spanish colonization, so Paitilla (a mini Payta) comes from over there when there were no countries established yet.

Hey Laptop Seniors, Bill from Boquete here! Love your videos, especially on Panama. Just a note...if I am not mistaken, you can only get the pensionado discount if you are a woman 55+ or a man 60+ AND you are a citizen or legal resident of Panama, so you are clearly both too young for the discount. 😂 I do believe you lived in Panama. Have you maintained your residency? If so, you should have been given the discount. That's really strange that they would turn you down.

We have cedulas. Just got them that morning but didn't really know how to ask for the discount etc. . When we did they kept arguing it was too late. They already made the bill. As for age, I'm in my upper 70's, Viv hits 70 next year. Age definitely wasn't an issue. 😀

How do you deal with the heat and humidity? It doesn’t look like it ever cools off there. Is there a large lap swimming pool?
@burtonknows92014 ай бұрын
LOL! I quickly learned to get out and about at 8 a.m. By noon, I'm looking for a covered outdoor cafe (I found one that also had large ceiling fans) for a quick lunch and a smoothie. I kept a small face towel in my back pocket to wipe away the sweat. What got me was the men working in the banking district who wore blue or black suits, with the women professionally dressed with makeup. Not a bead of perspiration. Where I stayed, there was a large pool on the building's roof.

Hi Burton. It’s our experience that locals receive the discount rather automatically but expats need to ask and provide visas or cédulas when asking for the bill. Thanks for following us 😁

Really like what you guys do on here..... but I just can't do the Spanish speaking countries. Much too 'uncomfortable' - for me. I'm old and would like to just be "comfortable" in my remaining days - as opposed to challenged isolated and frustrated. --?-- Surely I'm not the only US (wanna be) expat (?) that feels this way ? Belize or the Philippines - maybe even Malaysia (?) -- there seemingly aren't as many choices ? - - - I'll be watching.
@anniesshenanigans38155 ай бұрын
I get what you are saying. I spent 10 days there (Panama) and although it was very chill, I was with a group. when I ventured out it was uncomfortable. I work in SWFL right now, and we get a lot of Spanish only patients and it can be very uncomfortable trying to talk to them. I am thinking about visiting for a few months again to see how it feels long term. Stay in the expat areas. Then maybe travel over to the areas you speak of. Belize has only HOT climate, which is not ideal. And Malaysia is SO SO far to go!! Not sure if I am up for a 20 plus hour flight. I might cruise over.
@James-uk8dx5 ай бұрын
Respectfully, you may need to recalibrate your lense if considering the expat life. Language and cultural challenges will always be present, which is an exciting component in my opinion. The options you suggest, especially Indonesia, will be more difficult. Boquete may be an option to consider in Panama. High concentrations of expats bring the higher cost of living and other baggage along. The comfort level you require is probably in your current neighborhood. Good luck.
@laptopseniors5 ай бұрын
You know I totally get that but so much depends on where you go in a country. We found that out when we first moved to Uruguay. It was way easier than we figured and we had a minuscule amount of Spanish knowledge. We're putting together a video on exactly this. As an reference, we stayed a couple weeks in a condo in Coronado with other ExPats also living there permanently....for years. None of them spoke Spanish. Not a lick. They were fine. For what little they needed Spanish for, they somehow worked around it. Point being depending on the area you're in, it can be a non-issue....almost. Our sense was that Boquete is similar and probably Panama City too for the most part.

Wouldn't recommend Panama long term, given the current inside job breaking up the USA/dedollarisation, and with a BRICS/China MPNWO taking over, China is gonna want control of the canal. Add to that, Colombia reckon (with much justification) that Panama is theirs, was part of Colombia before the US stepped in/took it away for the canal. You could find yourself in a war zone within 10 years.
@laptopseniors5 ай бұрын
Very interesting take. Thanks. Not sure of all the points you make here but I would think that the US, under no circumstances, would let the canal fall into the hands of Colombia or any other country other than Panama. At least not until Mexico's canal is finished and running. Even then I doubt it. It'd be way too big of a political football.
@guillermogouldburn7635 ай бұрын
@@laptopseniors Exactly! The treaty turning over the canal to Panama states very clearly that the USA has the right to defend the canal militarily if necessary. If world war breaks out. Panama would be under the protection of the US Army thanks to the canal being there. No war zone to worry about.
