Mahogany rush was ‘AHEAD’ because of their ability to play different styles in same way Joe satriani would.decade later. Frank marino would start playing Christmas carols, screaming the melody, piercing the ears, thick tone. Building up to climax, earth shattering meteorite bombardment.

Discovered him a few years ago. Such an inspiration. Funny story. Wife and I had tickets to see him at the Seattle Arena in the mid/late seventies (I am 67). We thought we were going to see Rush. We found out it wasn't Rush and so sold our tickets to a couple of people. Only a few years ago, when I discovered him on KZbin, I realized what I had missed. It would have changed my life. We went to a club that night and saw a great local band (in the seventies every weekend had amazing live local rock shows). But, oh how I regret not having been introduced to Frank's music that day. No wonder all the people in line were so excited to see him.

I spoke to him after one of the shows, the man has fairly small hands, I couldn't believe it. There's an youtube video of him playing Hendrix's version of Watch Tower that he absolutely nails. His back story is pretty wild. Don’t quote me directly but it was something along these lines: he took a massive dose of LSD when he was like 13 and blew his own mind apart to the point where the spirit of Hendrix visited him and bestowed otherworldly abilities upon him. Afterward he had to be temporarily committed to a psych ward, but he recovered never to touch drugs again and from that day forward he was an absolute monster (though always criminally underrated.) I’m pretty sure that’s how the story went.
@knightfall9394
@knightfall9394 Жыл бұрын
The LSD and psych ward visit is true, according to frank some journalist created the hendrix thing and it ended up getting blown out of proportion and in some ways he didn’t exactly help that with hendrix covers and the obvious hendrix influence. The guy is a great player, I personally happen to enjoy his early 80s output a lot more than his 70s stuff

I saw Frank two times in concerts back in the mid-to-late 70s. Always enjoyed his music. If you watch closely you will discover that, while he uses all his left hand fingers, his middle finger seems to dominate much of his G string bends, especially in his fast "flurries!" (At least that is how I remember it. My vison loss precludes my ability to watch his "finger work" on these videos, anymore.)

@knightfall9394

Its because his lack of songwriting skill, obviously the guy has some cool songs but the record companies really didnt know what to do with him and couldn’t exactly market his big epic stuff which is why he ended up being known for purple haze, johnny b goode, and all along the watchtower covers in the 70s. Im pretty sure he’s touched upon stuff in the 70s about how he was the odd man out and no one really spoke to him on tour or guys didnt want to play shows with him. That spirit of jimi hendrix story that a journalist created didnt exactly help him and neither did the hendrix covers. He’s always done his own thing and i dont think he ever was concerned with commercial success which in a way was a blessing and a curse. I honestly think what little commercial success he had with his own material came from the song strange dreams in the early 80s

The Johnny B. Goode is from his hometown of Montreal and that was in 79. It was great. But he got even better. By 83, 84 live he did it all. Ending with Juggernaut after 11 years of Lp-road-Lp. I was blessed to see him in 83 and 84 in Chicago. Lots of great stuff but among his fans I would say we debated most between What's Next and Juggernaut. Though starting on the 78 Live album that has a lot of covers is a good place to check out his work.

Yep. One of the best guitarists to ever come out of my country of Canada. 🇨🇦👍 Frank Marino is criminally underrated, underappreciated and under-mentioned in guitarist circles, or anywhere else for that matter. He was very popular in the 70s, and then quickly faded away soon after, simply because music was changing as it entered the 80s. But Frank was truly one of the best. As this video demonstrates, his breadth of guitar licks and phrasing, and his ability to improvise was almost endless. More people, and more guitarists need to know about him and just how good he was.

Johnny winter and alvin lee cranked up to warp speed, he’s got some really cool stuff on his early 80s solo albums too. I think i initially discovered him through a zakk wylde piece in a guitar magazine where zakk mentioned mahogany rush live

The song may have been "Somethings Coming Our Way." It got a bit of radio play. 1980 or a bit later.

Wasn't that Francesco da Vinci Marino? He was playing with some Baroque minstrels playing Napoli Grungii.
