Some may have been friends, but I think when they said actors, they meant the Gmod tool which allows you make NPCs carry out a selected number of actions Essentially a scripted event tool. It can be used to make a combine soldier npc sit in cover, then pop out, take a shot, and then move in towards the camera. The addon is called something along the lines of “npc actors”

This is a very impressive and unexpected piece of machinima. You have managed to cleverly introduce the roster of characters and work them around in a story. I thoroughly enjoyed the dark atmosphere that seems to be used so rarely in movies these days; it works really well with the theme of revolution and brings memories from first playthroughs of Half-Life 2. Really loved the wide shots such as sewers view on the city, sometimes I wish you used wider focal lenght than 50mm, for some moments it was disorienting to see closeups 98% of the time. Anyway it was a great surprise after all those years. A lot of people moved on and forgot about half-life but perhaps that might ignite the interest once again and we will see some great movies once more :)

8:05 Is that a scoped SVT-40? Pretty accurate model. It makes sense lore-wise too, since city 17 is in Eastern Europe and there would still be a lot of surplus SVT-40s there, due to WW2. Realistically, a lot of the rebels would be using cold war era Soviet equipment tbh, and I think it fits the aesthetic of the game well.
@scudb55095 жыл бұрын
I think the reason why many people are English/Western there is because combine just gathered all the survivors and created a melting pot in the last remaining urban centre. What I don’t understand is why don’t we have Soviet Weapons in the actual game. Like AK-47s (that survived till the year billion trillion according to Doctor Who). Instead we get a not very popular MP-7. And that weird rocket launcher, they could’ve added an RPG-7 instead or additionally,
@volkolol5 жыл бұрын
@@scudb5509 Just because the game is set in Eastern Europe doesn't mean everything would be Russian. AK-47s (Or more appropriately, AKM) were actually planned in the beta, they were simply cut for simplicity or time. Though, aside from the Outland groups, the rebels would likely not be using old pre-combine weapons for the most part due to the fact everything they have is stolen from the Combine. I imagine the Combine took nearly every documented and found weapon in the city and likely trashed them for parts. Considering the Combine in Half Life 2's vision is supposed to be top-of-the-line military, the MP7 makes sense. It was made for counter-terrorist specialities, so it also makes sense in the hands of the combine forces to be deployed in case of civil uprisings, and notice how it's only seen whenever there is a anti-citizen threat. The rocket launcher simply can't be an RPG-7 for the fact it is wire-guided, so that's settled.
@scudb55095 жыл бұрын
Volkolov I wasn’t talking about replacing weapons. I was talking about extra weapons. The invasion happened in the 90s or Early 2000s. Weapon dumps were all over the Eastern Bloc, enough ammunition to destroy the world more than once, millions of AKs and RPGs. Wars were going on in Yugoslavia and Moldova, neighbours to Romania. People would definitely hide them, for future use. Combine could not possibly find everything. Besides, why produce something, when you already have a lot already. Waist of energy. MP-7s were available in limited quantities back then. Arm the elites with MP-7s, but leave the normal soldiers with AKs. And AKs would’ve been symbolic to have. It’s not only a weapon, it’s a symbol of the revolution, a symbol of rebels,insurgents and terrorists.
@notfreeman68095 жыл бұрын
@@scudb5509 it was probably a matter of gameplay over lore, having 5 different assault rifles wouldnt make sense in an HL game. they probably choose the mp7 because it fit the ruined future aesthetic

My god, this video is absolutely incredible, I was glued to the seat watching this entire thing. I was absolutely blown away by some of the scenes you managed to create, the city scapes must of taken hours to create, and for so many short clips. The bird cage scene must of been tricky to build, without the proper Garry's Mod tools, it looks a lot like you used Stacker for it. The scenes with G-Man were incredibly well short, the short pan backwards from Angela to reveal the briefcase caught me off guard. How did you make the interior of the APC? Did you build it yourself or was it just a prop you found? I realize the lack of voice actors must of made it really hard to convey the story from the characters, but the body language and gestures were spot on and you really got a sense of what was going on. The campfire scene with Padder had me on the edge of my seat, I was expecting some Predator shit to go on, Padder aint no Schwarzenegger I'll tell you that, so it was relief to see it was only a couple of zombies. Seeing Angela get Trans-humanized reminded me a lot of the time she got her arms amputated and replaced with cybernetic ones, just to fuck with her mental health, because the higher up who ordered it had a sick sense of humor. I absolutely have to say I loved this entire film, beginning to end. It's such a wonderful fucking momento to take away from all the years we've spent playing HL2RP together. You're doing fucking great things Dan, there'll come a you'll be making big budget films, you'll be the next J.J Abrams, you even got the lense flare down in some of these shots. From one retired HL2RP player to another, I salute you for this piece of art. -Padder

4 minutes in and I'm ALREADY amazed. For a first, the animation is so incredibly smooth, and with 11,000 hours in Gmod, I have NO clue how you did all this. I like to think of the vortigaunt poker scene as not just a parent and child moment, but more of that the bigger man will not overreact over simple things such as losing a poker game, and that's why the little one freaks out as such. But that's just me, I'm no english teacher. The concept of Gman making her swap with a stalker to a combine soldier is such an interesting one, and it shows just how powerful Gman is. The ACP firing just a few rounds, causing devastation through-out the group could symbolize how everything can change so fast. I personally know that well. It's a great way to bring up the suspense of the movie, truly a good moment. This is truly an achievement of an animation, cinematography, creativity, and everything it could and should be, for 2018 none-the-less. I thank you for making this purely so we could see it.

A fan made Half-Life animation that's 40 minutes long? This is like a dream come true! Homework will have to wait ;p EDIT: I finished watching it, and while I have some problems with it, for example I'm not really sure if there is any story (lack of dialogues doesn't help) and things like the guy living in the woods, and yet wasting precious ammo on pigeons and zombies are kind of funny, and some elements of violence seemed overdone and unnecessary, the G-Man is there apparently for no real reason, and I don't see the purpose of that combine soldier sub plot, I must say that I appreciate the effort and the fact that it's so long.

My General Breakdown: Again across the citadel, Judgement Day arrives. A wavier is raised to all citizens, which may be implying a raider coup/base has been located. Huddled inside a warehouse, resistance members coupled up ready to face the onslaught of Combine Civil Protection, meanwhile. The initial surge of bullets crashes into an unfortunate rebel standing in front of the weak barricade. Civilians outback use a back-door to escape whilst the remaining resistance hold their lines, they are soon overwhelmed, eventually evacuating themselves. One resistance member attempts to halt the inevitable assault, but gets terminated via Shotgun to the torso and was forced to be left behind, injured and left to rot. G-man acknowledges this. And confronts her later. A mild foggy afternoon at the citadel, the body’s from the raid were being counted. A small handmade sedan is seen driving down a isolated forest, soon coming to a halt near a valley of unusable cars. An effigy made out a human CP corpse was fashioned as a warning. A rebel seen moving into his Cabin. Hunting for his next meal. A coup of birds catches his eye, he’s thinking of having a nice dinner, one being caught and killed mercilessly. Whilst cooking his reward, It appears that the headcrab zombies are still persistent in hunting, no matter how the setting presents itself. As a fast-zombie is heard sneaking up in the rebel. He arms SMG, and guns down 2 infected before running through the cornfields, realising that his spot was vulnerable to more ambushes. He crosses through the forest out back into towards a small cabin. A small radio station, long abandoned, only used for broadcasting temporal messages. Sending out a message towards the rebels within the confines of City-17 attempting to find refuge. A tired and exhausted rebel is seen sleeping, he is quickly alerted by the presence of the broadcast from the radio station, the co-ordinates to a refuge, a safe haven. He kits up in his Rebel clothing, and moves into a small rebel hideout. Two vortigaunts are seen playing cards. The plan was to be discussed among the rebels. The woman killed during the evacuation is seen, met by the G-man. Her body was taken and was transformed into what seems to be a failed combine transition, she awakens into her trans-human body. Rising, as the stalker moves in with his suffering life of slavery. The Combine Solider comes across cages, filled with drones disguised as birds. Next to it, there is a small backpack, perhaps filled with suit energy or other resources. He stumbles across a propaganda room, observing the brain-washing that all other combine ranks endure. He makes a dash across the hallways, seeming to know a lot of things about the citadel. He observes a highly durable Combine APC. And sneaks into it with the intent of escape. The CP’s guarding it are alerted and attempt to halt the APC, their attempts are proven futile due to the APCs resistant armour plates. Combine Elites open fire into the APC, proving futile as the pulse cannon obliterates the bridge. Realising that the only escape is via an shoddy repair job. He dives into one of the canals around the citadel, forcing his way out of the APC before drowning. A group of citizens is seen filling up a train-cart of supplies. Before cutting back towards the depressing background, the ‘broken’ combine is seen as a disgrace to the Citizens, and is promptly attacked whilst being observed by the G-man. He is abused, but with the extensive combat training injected into the solider and the help of a Blinding Camera Drone, he dispatches them before evacuating with haste, away from the approaching CPs. A group of rebels are seen filling up a tran-carts full of ammo and other resources, whilst another observes and scans the layers of the citadel, he is spotted and scanned by a Combine Spy Bird, operated by what seems to be an elite. A Dark Charge is shot at the rebel, it is seen flying towards him with increasing speeds, with only a narrow dodge and a area full of debris, they were essentially walking beacons. Evacuated to another hideout in his sleep, the combine seen making their approach. The rebels, armed to the teeth, still plot an ambush in order to play it as safe as physically possible. As the first CP rounds a small wall, he is subsequently obliterated via shotgun. The LMGs fire up as the APCs make a futile defence against the relentless on-slaught of hellfire the rebels unleash. The civilians held up in another warehouse are announced a escape plan. Whilst a strider is deployed, taking out a Cross-Bow rebel. A Dune Buggy was dispatched, with one of the rebels unleashing a rocket upon the strider, destroying it. The Rouge Combine Soldier seems aware of the escape plan, and is plotting to steal a Combine Helicopter, the Rebels at the final gate leading to the exterior of the City, hold off a few units, before a combine APC was sent out and was ordered to terminate the means of escape, catching 3 allies in the process, destroying the exit console. Before everyone could be arrested, tortured or killed by the Combine dispatched. The Rouge Combine destroys the APC and the Combine with it. Blasting open City 17s heavily armoured gates, before clearing out the CPs that weren’t killed during the initial ambush. All the civilians rush to the forest, seeking the Safe Haven they were promised. Eventually, the co-ordinates were reached, everyone was safe. There’s still work to do, and our Rouge Combine has a job meeting to attend.

Breathtaking. I had no idea that this sort of film even existed until now. I would definitely like to see more, if it exists. Personally I play G-Mod, recently with little vigor. Now I may try something like this work of art if I ever have the time and inspiration (not to mention the patience) readily accessible. Excellent story as well. I am no expert, but I believe that this 40-minute film is definitely worthy of evolving into a 2-hour blockbuster action movie. Most impressive and excellent work!

My God... It's been some time since I scanned the community again for HL content. I'm a complete nut for this stuff, at least used to be, it consumed me. This is a real good rendition of the kind of content I wanted to make, albeit mine was only a summary of the HL universe storyline, 7HW & all. There's very few quality productions like this, I've spent over 14 years ruminating on my own project, saving the best mods, concepts, sounds, demos, & others' content. Gigabytes of stuff. Always too busy & never able to commit to manifesting it. Every now and again a gem like this pops up, don't know why it took me over 2 years to find, and it's incredibly emotional to watch. Not just from personal regret and waste, but you actually make me feel the novelty of the game universe again. Canon or not, this shit is phenomenally mesmerizing, and built with detailed craft in every shot. Thank you, man.
