Smart son. A whistle is the number one on the pack list I give to students. It's so easy to get lost even taking a few turns away from base camp finding a spot to do a #2 in the dark. Outdoors I always carry my SAK (Dutch army issue) model pioneer on a lanyard in my trouser pocket on a lanyard that also contains of a lanyard for knives when over water, on steep hills or in deep snow, small ferro rod with striker (carbon steel for flints that can also be used as a spear point) tick remover and small peace of fatwood and a whistle. I call it my last resort items. I have this carabiner that has some items on there also I can strap anywhere but it's outside of the pocket because it contains, among some other small stuff, an solar and crank powered small flash light and beta light so they need to catch some daylight. Than I have a food prep knife usually stainless steel I carry on my belt or as neck knife tip down. Depending on where I'm going and what I want to do is a stronger knife (usually carbon steel), machete or ax for the rough work. I have my survival tin and fire making tin usually in a fanny pack along with some other small stuff like an extra ferro rod, etc. and some tampons. I carry a haver sack or most likely the Colombian Mochila for the somewhat larger items like the canteen and cup, coffee, some cordage (not as much as you have), that stronger knife if not to big, small first aid kit, duct tape, zip tires, etc. There room left for collecting tinder and/or edibles. The tampons can be both used as tinder or in the field wound dressing. Slice them open halfway lengthwise butterfly them open and put on the wound and fixate with the duckt tape. I use the same system even when traveling with a backpack. The backpack will usually only contain what I need in base camp. If just for a day hike and not taking a backpack I add the orange reflective vest to the Mochila. But a great set up and good video! Thx for sharing.

Looks strangely like my own rig. Been running the Appalachian woodlands for 46 years. Agreed. On runs like this, practical is best, and less is more, but you have things to have fun with LOL. Nice rig brother.

Nice kit Joe! Looking into sewing myself a haversack for the summer and building a kit of my own. This gave me some nice ideas.

Great video Joe. Thanks for sharing. Ive been thinking of getting or making a haversack myself. I usually just take a small back pack. Nothing designated specifically... kept at the ready. Usually pack it as I need it. Having one designated and packed would save me time..so when I find I have the time to take off for a few hours I could just grab and go.. I waiste time (digging out kit and packing it up) that I could be in the woods. Now I will decide to make my own or purchase one so Its always at the ready and I can grab and go.. Thanks Joe...time for me to get my act together and become more prepared to easily be able to get out on short notice when I have some time to do so. It will also give me something to share with the community. Cheers Brother

Great video mate. Just wondering what size is that toaks cup? I find my pathfinder cup too big for cups of tae. Looking to pick up a slightly smaller one

Thank you. You had some good ideas (the drumstick and auger). However, just wondering, you didn't seem to have a flashlight and compass; not essential?
@LivingtoLearn6 жыл бұрын
Good spotting and thanks for watching. This is just my day hike pack to my usual spots. If I was going scouting for new spots a flashlight and compass would be part of it for sure.
@steveh49624 жыл бұрын
Joe, do you hike with a good staff or walking stick? As possession and use of weapons is quite limited in the UK, I should think it a necessity.
@axerxes39815 жыл бұрын
Joe..... terrific Video! Lots of good ideas, especially the drum stick... way coo!! That is your jacket or jumper?? Looks like a pull over, but hard to tell. What is it and where did you get it?? I'd love to have one like that. Thanks for sharing... good video!! Ax

Living to Learn dang it! None of the cool jackets from fjallraven are ever warm! What a struggle haha I guess it doesn’t matter if you look “cool” when camping lol It does matter though And I must have anorak number 8 now
