To me a favorite author is someone who you've read a few books from and constantly enjoy, and you'd give all of their books a chance.

I would consider favorite authors as having read 6 or more titles, or actively keeping up-to-date with their released works. i personally wouldn't go by ratings because as you stated writing styles change between stories.

I think this is such an interesting discussion. I think for truly favorite author I have to like the person as well as the books. Like with her that shall not be named, even though I loved so many of her books growing up, she cannot be a favorite author to me. My favorite author is definitely Tolkien because I love the way he went about being an author. I also have so much respect for him as a person.

Just found your channel, bouncing around your videos, I really enjoy them, thanks a lot. I like you as a person, your sense of humor had me laughing out loud several times, but also your thoughtfulness, intelligence and your honesty. Not to get all praiseworthy, but I do like hearing you talk about books and authors. Hope you’re doing well!

Chuck inspires that feeling in a lot of people it seems! I consider him a favorite author and Invisible Monsters, Fight Club, Survivor and Choke are some of my all-time favorite reads. His others range from ‘still really good’ to ‘big miss,’ though. It’s so interesting how everyone chooses their favorite authors differently!

I feel the same as you about Palanhiuk and Gaiman ! For Palanhiuk, I read and liked Survivor. I did not like Rant. And then I DNF'd Adjustment Day. And yet, I wanted to read his backlog and got most of his books ! Now I've unhauled a couple and have kept the 5 I think I'll enjoy the most. For Gaiman, I've read almost all of his books (over 50, he's got middle grades, picture books, comics, etc.) I've got only 3 things left... He is by far my favorite author but I've felt okay about more of his stuff then I loved. But it's his writing, his person, who he is and that part of him on the page that makes him my favorite.

I also agree with how I categorize my favourite authors. For me, if a book sparks ⚡️ a surge of any kind of emotion in me (excitement, emotional, etc) they can easily become a favourite author. I find myself questioning this more lately. It should take a lot more than just that to become a favourite. Sanderson is one I am confident is a favourite because every book has been a 5 star, ever re-read of his book gets me excited because I have always discovered a new sub-plot that blows my mind. For fantasy, he to me, is an author that can make fantasy haters love his books with how much of everything else he adds into it. Relationships, power that manifests itself in narcissism or violence and/or war. He adds in religion usually in the form of an entire character. He tests the meaning of belief and the difference of faith vs obsession and the consequences of both. 💕 he writes so much more than just a fantasy novel.

Neil Gaiman is both one of my favorite authors and all around people. I either love his books or I hate them. I love his writing and when he narrates his audiobooks… That’s to die for. But just like him, I am so confused by who is my favorite because there are such conflicting aspects

I have been doing the 3 five star favorites rule since 11th grade. It was something I came up with because my birthday is on a 23rd of December and 3 is a favorite number of mine. It's cool that you and Lala have decided to chose 3. I have never questioned my process for authors becoming my favorite. If I rate 3 books by an author five stars and those books are all in the same series I still count that author as a favorite. Some top favorite authors for me are Kristen Hannah, Ransom riggs, Debbie Macomber, Dan Poblocki and Jonathan Maberry.

To answer your question : what makes a favorite author ? For me it goes beyond the book and it also has to include the person. Jeff Vandermeer is one of my favorite author even though I loved and hated equally as many books, but I appreciate who he is as a person. Same for Neil Gaiman !

This is such a great video. Now I want to figure out what I consider a favorite author.. I have two that come in mind immediately, but they are Latvian authors (I’m Latvian too). I have read all the books they have published and have enjoyed all of them. Unfortunately only one book from one of the authors is also available in English and it’s The Curse of the Cat by Linda Nemiera. I think I need to sit down and think about this topic now.

What makes a Favorite author for me, I can't quantify it. I've read 22 books by Andrew Vachss but I would not call him a favorite. I've read 13 by Chuck Palahniuk, some 5 stars & some 2 stars, but I'd call him a favorite author. I've read 2 books by Deborah Kay Davies, 4 by Larry Brown and 4 by Patrick deWitt - all 3 are favorites of mine. I just like them. Their works connected with me, there was a spark. In French, je ne sais quoi ! I do love your quest into the essence of what make a favorite author for you. 💖

I go by gut instinct alone when picking favorite authors. Kind of like do they spark more joy than other authors? I have favorite authors with books I've DNF'ed or ones I've only read one book from. It's all feeling and not statistics or I would also overanalyze.

I thought this was an easy question but y'all got me questioning everything. I usually call Neil Gaiman my favorite author because his authorial voice is just so rich and beautiful and unique. But maybe Angie Thomas should be on my list because I've never given any of their books less than a 4.5 star rating? Or Tamora Pierce because I've read the largest quantity of her books and they're very nostalgic. Or do I go with Bram Stoker because he wrote my all time favorite book? Or maybe Celeste Ng as an Auto Buy author? Oh god, do I include non fiction?

For me, a favourite author must have written at least 3 "works" (like you said, a series counts as one) that are at least 4* and one 5*. I only found 2 so far (Jane Austen, who reigned supreme for many years, and just last year Adrian Tchaikovsky), but I'll keep searching!

I think a favorite author would be anyone who left a deep impression on me for a long time and multiple times (in a positive way) obviously if I hated a book so much that I can’t stop thinking about it, I’d not call that person a favorite. 😂 That way it’s not about ratings and also if I hated books by them as well, that doesn’t take away books that I did love. In my mind, I would just consider them to have only written those that I loved and ignore the rest and still call them a favorite because of X Y and Z books. Also, I think favorite author and favorite genre don’t have to be the same for me. They are different questions!

There are some authors that I say are my favorites, but I don't love everything. That's how it is with Stephen King, because some of this books don't interest me like Mr. Mercedes. I use to think F. Scott Fitzgerald was a favorite, but his books got formulaic and he would write about the same thing. I mean he's a great writer and its what he knows but I started to get bored after reading a bunch of his short stories. SJM and Cassandra Clare used to be a favorite, but lost interest in the worlds they created. Donna Tartt is another, but so far I have only loved one of her books and I kept thinking should I give her other books another chance.

well how important is it to have a favorite author list? there are some authors that have ether made a few things and i've LOVED only one thing. or they have made a lot and I might even read it all and be entertained but i will never consider them a fav. i do have fav authors but even then there are subcategories i divide them into. i suppose this means there are a few that are my Loved authors and nothing will ever topple them. but for the most part i'm not overly concerned with the authors. i look for books to treasure and hoard. sometimes i come back to the same source and come away in satisfaction, or sometimes i walk away until i hear good things. ...i suppose the reverse is also true. i've had one book put me off so bad, i dont care to look into their future works. i might be wrong about their writing, but one bad time will put me off.
