I've got a fish room of my own, all my tanks are there except for one display 75 in the main entryway. I think you touched on this a little bit, but one of the best things about having the fish room is the fact that you have a space that is entirely yours creatively speaking. There is a large physical space that you can experiment with, and where you can see ideas and planning come to life and be realized; I think there is a lot to be said about that aspect of the hobby. Plus a room full of great / special tanks really gives off a fantastic private aquarium feel that is fantastic to experience personally, and really blows away guests. There are few people that don't find a strong school of 100+ silver tip tetras at least a little bit awe inspiring.

Loved the video! I have about 15 tanks spread across three different rooms in my house and one on my porch so I can’t really use an air pump for all of them and it’s also a lot more walking to feed everything than if I had them all in one room. I’ve been able to avoid extra maintenance by focusing more on plants and bacteria than filters and it’s worked out surprisingly well so far

I greatly appreciate how you structured the video. Arguing the Pro's and Con's is a great way to present a more grounded argument. I've often seen fish rooms I've been jealous of. But my propensity for automation and a desire to limit the amount of chores has always led me towards running a single system (aside from say a hospital tank when necessary). That perspective has also lead me to criticize channels which overly support having a dedicated room as the only viable path forward. However, I think you did the topic justice. You have a beautiful example to show, and presented the double edge in a reasonable set of arguments. Good video Sir.

I think one other issue, that goes along with space, is weight of the tanks. Seems easiest to put a fish room in the basement, otherwise you’d likely need to reinforce the floors

basements incredible huge space .But as we get older it’s harder and harder to go up and down the stairs .So I love to put my aquariums where I’m at most of the time kitchen living room bedroom even the bathroom lol We’re heading to aquariums to a guestroom everything has to be very quiet so I find that the best for me in my retirement years.No mom and Pop aquarium shops in our area only PetSmart and Petco and one small shop I’d rather not buy a sticker gun if you know what I mean .20 years ago people used to go there like the zoo now no one goes across the crashing of another shop.A local breeder in our area died four years ago and I can’t tell you how many stores got fish from her they couldn’t beat her prices she sold To many many mom and pop stores so she’s gone and so are they.So I mail order most of my fish now or I don’t get them.

Considered it, as I've had dedicated reptile/ invert rooms for many, many years. However, I'm pretty content to have a select few larger tanks + QT/hospital tanks as kind of a compromise. Cost, maintenance, and potential problems were the major factors in that decision.

The patio pond taught me a lot this year... it's the first tank where plants beat algae which is nuts in full sun... I have algae in it now for the fry to help with spaces for microorganisms, but I had to TRY to grow it by overfeeding and ferts.

Great video Zenzo! I used to want a fish room, and started my first 55 gallon in a spare room. And then maintaining simply one tank was harder than I thought. (Health stuff) Then I got two several years later a 20L and regular 20. Plus a 10 for quarantine. All in my dining/living/kitchen. And since I am a clutter bug, it drove my husband crazy. We finally agreed to one big tank which is ok, a 75 but it’s a busy room and the cats swat at the fish, and the dogs race through, so the fish are fairly spooked. Definitely not as restful as closing a door and just watching your tank. So I wish we had placed this tank in that space again. But I would definitely develop MTS a lot faster with a room with just one tank. So maybe this is for the best. Although, the two quarantine tanks that I am setting up today in my bedroom…well they won’t be QTs forever… 😜 The one CON that I have with just one big tank, is wanting different types of fish that really can’t live together. So that MTS creeps in again.

I have a fish room in my basement, mainly for breeding. I also have 5 large display tanks, 90+, in common areas of the house. 45 tanks total. I think you nailed it. The display tanks take the same amount of time as the room cause they are on 2 different floors and the equipment has to be carried form one to the next.

I'd say you covered it pretty well - although I'm at the point in life where I don't care if I never leave the fishroom. Just finally consolidated and expanded into a dedicated fishroom and have been considering what to do for emergency power. A whole-house backup isn't a possibility for a while (just re-sealed and waterproofed the basement to make the fishroom and had a garage built.) The only feasible option I can come up with is a small gas generator, do you have any better ideas?
@tothegarden
@tothegarden 2 жыл бұрын
Small gas generator is cheap and effective. Unless you have an auto starting one you would need to be there to start it up. I am looking into battery backup powered by solar for a fish room I am working on. It is much more expensive in the short term though and mine would back up other parts of my house as well.

I'd argue giving me a reason to not be away could be more pro than con :). 25 ish tanks for me all in 1 room and the utility room next to it. To make a longer trip work for me I adjust to a minimal amount of feeding with extreme foods in autofeeders on non puffer tanks 3 days prior to a longer trip, then water change and filter service 2 days prior to minimize the waste while gone. I also use more live foods. Those definately have extended my time away ability here. I will feed more live blackworms, snails, shrimp, scuds, and misc culls the day before leaving to keep some food available for a majority of a trip. I have used that live food hack to be away for 14 days without issue for everyone in the fishroom older than 30 days when I left.

I am fortunate enough to have a fish room! My personal cons however is that this room is on the second floor 😑 I am constantly paranoid about leaks and the potential of ever needing to move them again. (I have 7 tanks 5 gal- 20 gal.) On the plus side though I’m not worried about space (I am also in the SF Bay Area) as I don’t have kids! 😂

Maybe this is good advice for anyone considering a fish room, I went from a 75g & 40g to a rack. Rack holds 4 40g and 20, 3 10s, and 5. That's enough for us, I wouldn't mind getting one giant tank (125+) but think I am done with smaller tanks. It's too crowded and feels like not everything gets full attention. Plus the smaller tanks on top are hard to reach and get ignored more being out of sight.

A year ago I had 2 tanks. Now I have 20. I love it but it requires at least 30-40 min a day just to maintain. I'd say I've learned a lot but so much of my knowledge comes from this channel and Aquarium Coop. I cheated and basically did what you guys said. Thank God for these channels.

I have 4 tanks and that is about max for what I can handle for the time I have for maintenance and still enjoy them. I'm thinking of upgrading next year down to 2 tanks and consolidating all my fish into one since if I get a longer tank I think I can get all of my favorite into one tank.... but I have to keep one up because I'm not sure about apistogramma with sparkling gourami... I think if i scape it right it will be ok, but I'll have my back up plan if there are problems when I try it. My plan is to make almost a "shelf" mid level with driftwood and broadleaf anubias so that the gourami can be hidden from the lower layer where the apisto will tend to be.... maybe I'll get lucky... I have 5 sparkling gourami in a 20 tall with guppies and they get along fine and that goes against common advice... well they leave the adults alone anyway, but it is much nicer for me not having to have excess guppies "sleep with the vegetables" and be culling all the time

I always envy all the peeps with fish rooms...but as structured and organized as I am I would be doing something all the time every single day. I currently have 2 community tanks that finally don't need water changes as frequently. I have a shrimp only 3 gallon that takes care of itself and my pea puffer tank the really is the only tank that gets regular water changes. I have 2 more tanks that are in my home office that I'm getting ready to scape and set up...and then I will be done!! I will have most of my wish list list fish. But I am only able to set up these other tanks because the others are stable. A fish room is cool and those who have them..super cool 😎

How much dies this affect your ability to enjoy then in daily life? Obviously at this point you'd be spending a good amount of time in the room anyways, but I've always liked keeping my tanks where I spend my time. Eating dinner, see my fish. Watching TV, see my fish. A fish room sounds amazing but I also don't see myself spending just sitting in the basement or garage or wherever as much. On the other hand I don't want to take iver my living space

It depends if I decide to work down there or just stay in my office upstairs. I am usually down in the fishroom everyday for a little bit of time, feeding and checking on the fish. Sometimes I go down there just to sit and relax for a little while. Also, my home gym is connected by a door, so I often go back and forth between sets to fiddle with things in my tanks. If I decide to work down there for part of the day, I will be down there for more time. Overall I’d say that I enjoy the fishroom tanks as much as I enjoy my living room tanks.

Your water bill I guess that would go with costs no matter where you were depending on state.I have a well excellent. other than minor gases in my water have to wait at least 15 minutes before adding water to my aquarium it hard to just take the Python and add to my Aquariums The gas most certainly would kill the Fish .I’ve been there.Was wondering does anyone else have that problem with slight natural gases in well water.Thankfully my water is incredible just add Koi last year to half Acre pond they Tripled in one year in size .My husband would’ve built me a room if I needed it I have a huge basement that would be the pits have to run up and down now ha ha Have two large Aquariums in my master bedroom We love them really Beautiful to watch at night along with a great movie.Built-ins in the kitchen and dining area .etc We still have a large spot in our family room that would hold at least 250 gallons It’s my dream tank And kid safe !Now it holds family photos lots of them.So seeing the cons as we get older I’m happy to have nine beautiful aquariums the knowledge from KZbin Corey you and Dean particularly. To feed my love for the hobby So as we get older We are blessed to be able to enjoy retirement minus horses lol! My aquariums have been with me 35 years now big and small .And I can tell you I enjoy them more now and appreciate them more now than ever before love watching the KZbin fish keepers share their experience makes a hobby that much more rewarding
