Speaking as someone great with kids, I've found that those who are amazing with kids usually don't have their own! It's soo much easier to have all that energy and love for little people when you're not constantly sapped of energy from the day-to-day stuff. When you're good with kids, you get the best part of kids and their parents get the less cute stuff like tantrums and messes. Speaking as someone who's been the favorite aunt for many, many years, I've been beloved by the little people in my life as the fun, "pays attention to me"/"does stuff with me" aunt. Now that I've adopted one of my nephews; and to be clear, despite having no plans for 2-legged children of my own, I love him and give him everything he needs and more, I still get the rotten parts of the "having kids" stuff: dirty diapers, him getting into everything, his absolute meltdowns at the smallest things- like being told not to chew on his dang sippy cup tops just breaks his little heart and then I feel like mean mom, even though he totally shouldn't be chewing on the freakin' sippy cup tops! Parenting is exhausting. And knowing how devoted they are to their animals and the fact that the zoo is their baby and they're busy, busy, busy, I very much doubt they will have any human kids. Either way, it's totally their choice and it's really a private matter.

Remember that your insurance only covers so much! Think of making things inclusive. Never anything ALL LIGHTS OFF - unless you're doing an adult theme and even then - remember that (strangely) the 100 Mile Club is a real thing. Always have staff at the turtle tank. That's one place actual interaction with animals - also Sharon - can happen. We really don't want anything dangerous or otherwise going into that tank. I can easily go on forever. I AM a wet blanket: safety first! Eye on the side of safety. Always have a larger number of staff than customer ratio on anything scary or dark. I was a very sensitive, sheltered little kid, who got taunted a lot for being a crybaby. I probably would have burst into tears and asked to go home while the kids all laughed and the adults all scolded me for being "spoiled". :< Which, now that I think about it, is what usually happened with Easter egg hunts I participated in every year at church. To be fair, the big kids and the little kids all went at once- the adults herded us into a huge, disorganized group, counted down, and said GO. I think they got some sick pleasure out of watching us jostle for position, stampede, fall down, knock each other over, get trampled. (The especially sadistic parents made us wear our best clothes for the most sacred day of the Christian calendar, then screamed at us after the egg hunt for getting them dirty.) The big kids, the tallest and fastest, got all the eggs, while the rest of us scrats got dirt and skinned knees. The grown-ups were all "oh well, survival of the fittest, you'll be the one to get all the eggs when you get bigger", which, in hindsight, was pretty damned twisted. Not to mention ironic- picture your Sunday school teachers standing there, teaching you social Darwinism, while the mere sight of a biology textbook was liable to make them faint. After a couple years of bumps, bruises, and heartbreak, I refused to go anymore. We stuck to hunts in the backyard from then on- no bigger kids to push us down, no fancy Sunday dresses to spoil, no shrill screams for a Mommy more worried about grass stains than broken ankles. ...I think I need to go lie down for a while.

We looked in the newspaper community pages to find things to do and my girls (3 all very close in age) thought it was sooo cool. It wasn't until they needed ideas themselves and were looking in their community pages (on line) and realized the most important thing: many of the activities were free or had nominal fees attached. We all got a big laugh as one-by-one each girl figured it out. My Mom did the same thing and passed it on to her 6 daughters. We stayed connected with our community and had so much to do. We then could afford a movie night here and there or go out to dinner at a nice restaurant. Thanks for putting that out there!

Then as a parent you have a MUCH better opportunity to try the "let's take a look at your eggs" and giving others a chance to find some eggs. Thankfully, Emily and Ed must have been in these situations as they put out 400+ eggs for each hunt! Very smart and hopefully they didn't run out. Another commenter had a great idea of Staff walking around holding a bag and nonchalantly dropping off new filled eggs. One thing I learned making programs for kids at a nonprofit: make a detailed record of what you did to prep for the event, for the event, and specifically what you would have improved on. That way next year you have a record of what went right and what can be done better. More detailed than this video. Maybe even make note of what date you should start prepping for it so it doesn’t sneak up on you. It’s also handy because if it’s a good enough record someone else can take over the project next year or the year after and use your notes from the last year or two as a guide.

Its where you set up different stations with carnival games where kids can win prizes and candy! At the schools I've worked at, we also turn it into a fundraiser with a cake walk or a raffle. Don't be afraid to ask teachers/schools near you for ideas on how to celebrate holidays in a fun kid friendly way!
@alicecain48512 жыл бұрын
For the 4th's idea, what about a movie on the side of their building? People are usually out late because you can't start any of the fireworks until after dark and it's not dark enough until after 9 pm in July.

Okay so I’m not a huge “kid” person, but sometimes they really do endear me. That little boy who made his own Rex shirt was one of them, so freakin sweet

You could color code eggs for age groups.. So like 2-4 yr olds get green 5-7 year olds get blue... And hide them at different heights so the kids know what eggs are for their age group and they leave the others behind
@natalieelizabeth51202 жыл бұрын
We used to color code like this when we did egg hunts when we were little
@alicecain48512 жыл бұрын
But after the 200+ mark... They were hiding 400+ for each group! Getting them out at all... Plus - how many 2 - 3 yr olds know their colors that well? There are only so many parents and staff to go around. And as I pointed out in another comment - who wants the job of taking the "wrong" colored egg out of the 2 - 6 yr olds basket? I promise you it won't be pretty.
@SeattleSeaDragon2 жыл бұрын
@@alicecain4851 older kids most certainly can tell their colors apart.. So if you put a bunch of green eggs close to the floor and you tell older kids hey leave these for the small children it's a possibility..

What if for Halloween the reptiles had little baskets full of candy that say “please take one” and the kids could go around and tick or treat at the different enclosures. Maybe certain enclosures also have pumpkins in them as well (if it’s safe for the reptile of course).

As for holiday programs, I always loved running story time for any special occasio. and we did special 'spooky animal stories' themed guided tour (for us, it was things like the death's head and black witch moths, both of which have been seen as omens of death)

glad everyone had a great time egg hunting! also, you say the leftover chocolate bunnies are for employees, but you really mean they're for Emily (we're onto you!) seriously though, it's a great idea to do events like this! not only does it get more people interested in coming to the zoo, but it also is great PR!
@warriormaiden98292 жыл бұрын
Lol, did you notice that when Emily was putting the prizes in the 'big prize' tub, one of the boxes was empty? She thought she was being sneaky, but we know her too well by now. XD (Not like I have a nose for sniffing out empty boxes so I can avoid them. Nope, not me... 😂)

I added a comment about making it more inclusive for people with disabilities too. I know that there are many types of disabilities, but then why not a full day of different hours for people with different types of abilities? People are most often not completely deaf or blind but they need different environments. Low light to find objects and low sounds around them for the beaping eggs if in more difficult hiding places. Just because you have a disability doesn't mean you want it to be completely simple - at least for certain ages. Hopefully if they ever do something like this, they'll ask you for ideas.

Maybe you guys could give the kids & participants a unique stamp on their hand for each round and they can choose which round to participate in so everyone gets a chance.

For 4th of July, maybe some sort of block party style event? The park near where I grew up used to have little games and events for kids, and some food vendors selling hotdogs and burgers and such that they were cooking on the grill. Combine that with some indoor programing and it could be a really cool community event!

Next year you should use name tags but instead of putting names on them put Round #1 / Round #2 and Round #3 so you can distinguish which kids have already had a turn finding eggs. Maybe even have the Snake Discovery Logo in the tag. Just a thought. Everyone look d as if they had a great time.

I'm just several States away and still can't get there - yet! Hopefully COVID and things going on in the world will calm down and make it easier for everyone to enjoy these types of little things more. I'm glad that Emily and Ed can put on these types of things now so that their community does have these opportunities. Check out your own community to see what it has to offer. It may not be up to Snake Discovery level - but what is?!? Doesn't mean it can't make a wonderful memory for you and your family. Good luck to you!

I adore Ed's level of bastardry with hiding all the eggs up where only a 6-foot person could reach, and the random empty egg. Not so much fun for the employee who catches a grumpy parent, but huge fun for the rest of us! Mwa ha ha ha haaaaaaaa *cough cough* ouch

Hi Guys! What a fun day! I hosted monthy events for almost 20 years. Let me pass on some tips! ☆ Scout troops and high school seniors are always looking for volunteer opportunities. ☆ Make a file system for your events. What went wrong, or right, supplies needed, suppliers for items, cost, etc... It really helps when you want to run an event more than once. ☆ lots of "holiday" opportunities. Mothers day "bring scared moms in to ease they thoughts". May 4th dress up in star wars! Grandparents day! Tropical dress and learn about animal dances or high light reps from the tropics. ☆ Remember to always have a donation box visible. It never hurts and it can advertise upcoming events. ☆ one of the biggest things is to not waste what you learn from an event. Write it down to remember. It will put you two steps closer next time to getting it done. ☆ Don't be afraid to ask for help. You saw how eager your friends were to help. Let them stuff those eggs next time. And even help find things to fill them with. It was a fun video. Thank you.

hmm, odd I was taught as a kid to help the smaller kids get eggs that are higher up. (my aunts would give the big kids prizes for whom was ever the most helpful to encourage this) Then again some of the hunts I went to had egg limits to keep kids from getting more than other kids. I am glad you got help. As for how to celebrate other holidays.... umm, have rex eat a red white and blue cake?

I love you guys so much and I cant wait to go over for next years easter egg hunt. In my opinion you guys should have the rounds go by age groups so no body feels at a disadvantage while looking, like for example toddlers and kids go first then tweens and teens go second and the last round for adults...like me...who love egg hunts because were a child at heart lololol
