In this video you can see how using two clubs works the shoulder and upper back muscles (deltoids and trapezius). Using a single club engages the muscles on the opposite side of the body (the obliques and intercostal muscles). One specific exercise with a single club (shoveling sand) works the latissimus and erector spinae (lower back) muscles.
The stop - start motion of the clubs in these exercises may offend the purists that prefer smooth circular movements. The forces involved in decelerating the clubs, and then accelerating them again, means that the exercises become more intense, that is why I do it.

Making the clubs provides almost as much exercise as swinging them!

Excellent Andrew, the stop start motion is very much part of Meel Turning, so I don't think that you should worry about offending purists. I saw some great half beat turning in Iran with one club motionless whilst the other was scribing a full circle. Am currently working on it, the timings are very difficult, as you automatically go for swinging both clubs, where you want to swing just one. All good fun.

you are a legend paul i saw your great videos, Im persian and doing excercize at the house of power myself and never seen such creative motions like these before and cant imagine how with pair of meels you can do a lot of work out. greeting from Ireland

In South India especially Tamil Nadu they call it KARALAKATTAI. There have about 64 to 72 type of single KARALA swinging method. And there is about 28 to 35 Double KARALA swinging method in Tamil Nadu. They using 6 type of different shape KARALA for swing. Each type have its own particular name and benefit and method of swinging.
