Having Pride | Thomas Sanders

This month is Pride Month, and its a very important time to be educated and pay tribute to those who came before us fighting the struggles for equality and the present fight that still is being fought against oppression today. It's also, I think, a good time to come together and be proud of who we are. This can be tough sometimes, as it was for so many of my friends and I. So I decided, for this video, to do something special, and sit down with a lot of my friends and answer some questions you all may have had about our personal experiences with our identity.We don't represent everyone on the spectrum, and we can only speak from our own personal experiences, we don't know everything, but hopefully, something we say may help some of you out there watching. I talk way more personally and openly about myself than I usually do here, so forgive my nervousness and I hope you enjoy.

For four years I didn't tell my best friend that I was gay. I was afraid that, as a straight man, he'd no longer see me as "one of the guys" if he knew. Recently, I finally came out to him and told him I have a boyfriend. Right away, he told me that he's bisexual and also has a boyfriend, which I never knew. After that, we opened up to each other and the walls came down. We were both hiding our lives from each other out of fear, and it turns out there was nothing to be afraid of! It was a fantastic moment.

Coming out has always been weird for me. Many friends have known forever, some friends don't know to this day, but by far the hardest to me was when my sister accidentally outed me in front of my massively conservative parents. They seemed to ignore it (to this day my oldest sister's wife of 7 years is her "roommate" when my dad speaks of her) but I was terrified because I was NOT ready for them to know. I have 3 kids and I hope they never have to feel like they're not able to share who they truly are with me. 💗💛💙

I came out to my mom almost two years ago (August 13th) as Bi. I didn't even have the courage to tell her IN PERSON. I wrote a letter and put it on a mirror in her bedroom before I left to go to my dad's and basically cried myself to sleep the entire weekend. I got back and my mom had written a six-page letter in response (because I specifically asked her to not talk to me personally about it because I was still uncomfortable) and she didn't care. She thought I may have been too young to decide (I was 12) but she said that if I felt that I liked both guys and girls, or decided I was a lesbian, or a transgender, or whatever that she would still love me no matter what. I still cry whenever I read the letter, though.

STORYTIME: I accidentally came out (I'm bi) to my mom when we were watching TV and, Supernatural came on. We were watching the episode when we first meet Charlie (who is a female) and I ever so casually said,"Oh, she's really hot." When I realized what I said, which was about three seconds, I started trying to explain what I meant. She stopped me and asked if I liked girls, when I said yes and added that I also liked boys, she smiled sadly and said that I was confused and that it was only a phase. Later she realized that it was never a phase, that I do love both boys and girls. She apologized, saying that she now understood. I'm happy to say that the one and only Thomas Sander encouraged me to come out to my parents, and if it weren't for him, I would still be in the closet. My older sister who was adopted last year is gender non-binary and I call them "Big sis" because my dad told me to call them that way. They were born male (Brian) but they have another side to them who's female (Akané).I have two big sisters who were adopted, one Bisexual and one Lesbian. I'm pansexual and my younger sister is Bisexual. My dad learned about my biological sister's sexuality and sat down for two seconds to take it in before being like "I'm proud of you, you just told your dad what makes you happy and, if you come home with a girlfriend, I will welcome her with open arms." He then adopted the twins because they were mistreated for being attracted to girls by their mother. Then, he adopted a beautiful human being that introduced themselves as Akané but then said they were gender non-binary so I got confused for a while (I read a lot of books since then so I'm ok now). And then, I realized my own sexuality and haven't told my dad yet but I don't think he needs to hear it because he always knew I didn't want a relationship with someone I don't like for their personality. I think it was obvious because I told my mom and she didn't even flinch. Ten children and five have found out they were in the LGBTQ+ community.
