Indians buy bleaches and fairness products, which are also advertised with leading film stars endorsing these products. We must admit we are obsessed with skin colour to the extent that we would accept advertisements portraying darker women as less employable than fair skinned women. And the word gora or gori ( fair skinned )being used almost as a synonym for beauty is accepted in our society. If we aren't racist then I do not know who is.

They are all supposed to be a group of international dancers with Ms. Hawa Hawaii as their main attraction. Since India back then didn't have the concept of political correctness, I guess they just decided to paint the same local brown dancers black to portray them as dancers of a different nationality, thereby cutting down the expenditure while still giving the group an international feel (back in the day).

I couldn't even figure out why Rick and Korbin were so offended till they said "black face". 😂 Black face isn't a concept in India, because India does not share America's history of slavery (if anything, we were victims of it). I guess they painted their bodies and faces black to contrast it with the white and pink they were wearing. And most of us are dark skinned anyway, so it's not offensive whatsoever to our senses. Our culture never oppressed the Black people because of their colour Like you describe. No one should accept this racism accusation.
@TheB6574 жыл бұрын
@@ккє-о6ц Partiality is true Sir but not "racism" . Reason is with due respect the Bollywood industry favours those with "fair - complexion" compared to those who are original skinned. This is why most actors and actresses are heavily made up (they apply all sorts of skin lotions and make - ups) except a handful few who naturally have a fair skin tone. This is the darkest side of Bollywood .... and any wood so far.... The casting bench easily says : "He/She won't fit the camera ... sorry not in the market". This is gradually changing with great actors who were treated unfairly have started production companies of their own which hires true talent instead of "skin - colour". From ~ 1960s till now, the film industries in India have evolved from slight cultural to No culture representation. Hence as for my viewpoint, modern Indian film industry is more of "Not Indian" anymore and more of lavish rich people in parties, garbs and wines. I hope you get what I mean.

Historically, there is no white-black racism in India. Though india had caste system but nothing based on skin color. So, it was no big deal in india to color faces that way. And today also it is not, becos India has no history for skin color discrimination.

We did, we do. Just that back then it wasn't as sensitive a topic. When I was a kid, if I called a dark person "kalia", nobody would have batted an eye (but my mom slapped me when I was 8 for this reason, and I learned my lesson).

I think u don't know why fair and lovely creams are having such a high revenue from India. It's because we are obsessed with white/fair skin. Being fair skin is welcomed by society and dark/black skin is looked down upon. If you are living under a rock till now then wake up and see with your own eyes

Back before the 90s, racism was not talked about much or it wasn’t frowned upon even if it was prevalent. Hence, the moviemakers didn’t bother to showcase it that way in the movies

Those smugglers called a foreign dance crew from hawai island and lead dancer was miss hawa hawai sri devi who is journalist gets to know this and somehow comes instead of miss hawa hawai to smugglers den to know there plan.... What director did he required dancers who looked like from hawai island for a song only to dance not for acting so he managed by makeup and as it was a fun movie this was ok because indian man disguised as african made it more funny

Indiana Jones was not racist as well. Nor was Mr. India. It's just a depiction of people in movies. That's all. It's not about being racist but just doing something to have something. India and the black culture is big enough to enjoy humor and such situations. There's a white guy for crying out loud in this movie Mr. India who's made to look like a bumbling idiot. Loads of Indian movies make the white guy the villain and Indians generally are openly racist against the whites (gorahs as they're called). Reflects a lot in Indian movies where they openly mock white people. Why doesn't Mod Missy bitch about that then?
@KOOOLICE5 жыл бұрын
I can't believe people are defending this blatant racism/black face in the comments with their whataboutery abt Indiana Jones or by simply pleading ignorance. Sure, you were kids and were ignorant about it. The maker wasn't. Director Shekhar Kapur, is a British film director, who studied in the UK and has traveled worldwide before entering movies. He knew exactly what he was doing, perhaps you didn't. So, stop defending him.

@Nischal0009995 жыл бұрын
I am sure there was. It just wasn't recognised. Black facing the background dancers to dance as idiots is dehumanizing black people. Back then, black people were just thought of as freaks from Africa. And that is racist. It just wasn't recognised as racism.
