Worldwide for life! I saw Ben and Kathy and Mrs Gayle, we know them through the business. We are in the Tsuruda organization on Maui. So great to see all the family cooking and enjoying traditional meals together. I could almost smell and taste how good it was. We'll see all of you at Dream Night next weekend, aloha.

Can you make a video specifically showing how to make the kombu knots? I would like to learn this technique but I can’t see your grandma’s hands during the knot tying segment. And the video is sped up so it’s hard to see details. Thanks so much for all these old fashioned recipe techniques!

I can see if my mom remembers how... I don't think my grandma would be able to show me again. Possibly...

Hi, Carolyn! I was just browsing through your video when I saw a couple of people I recognized! I remember Mr. & Mrs. Haru Tamamoto when I was growing up in Laupahoehoe/Papaaloa! Mrs. Tamamoto used to cut my hair! My mom, Michie Ikemoto still lives in Laupahoehoe. In fact, she celebrated her 90th birthday just two days ago. Please give your grandfather and grandmother my best wishes! I was SO THRILLED to see them on the video! By the way, I really like your video too! I wanted to know how to make a proper nishime with the right flavor. Now I know how. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year! Aloha, Glenn Ikemoto

Hi Glenn!Thank you for your nice comment! I will share this with my grandparents. I'm sure they will be thrilled to hear from you. My mom says that she remembers you from Laupahoehoe! I'm going to try to continue to film more of them in the next couple months. :-) Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video.Cari

Carolyn Lee Is Gail your mom? Terrific! Give her my best wishes too! BTW, my best friend on Kauai is Wayne Tanji. His sister, Jan, is married to your Uncle Owen! When I was working, Uncle Owen was one of the attorneys in our department, the Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs. And, if I'm not mistaken, Aunty Jan's father, Bill Tanji, and your Grandpa Haru were good buddies in the Army during World War II! Small world, isn't it? Again, give my best wishes to EVERYONE! Keep up the good work too! I LOVE your videos! I can cook great, hearty meals in Maine where I live during the summers and falls. Winters and springs, we live on Kauai. We have the best of both worlds! Take care, Carolyn! Aloha nui loa, Glenn

Glenn Ikemoto Yes, Gail is my mom. Small world! And I remember meeting Aunty Jan's brother Nils and his wife April. And yes, my grandpa and Mr. Tanji were good friends during the War. Small world for sure. Thank you again for your kind comments. Glad that we're connected over youtube. Wow, its nice to be able to live in two places. That is definitely the best of both worlds. :-) glad you're enjoying the videos. Thank you for watching! Please continue to share my channel with others that would appreciate my grandparents local style dishes.

Hi, I was just looking for a recipe for konbu seaweed when I came across your video. I live on the Big Island and grew up in Hilo, and I was thinking boy they seem familiar, and their mannerisms were so familiar and I thought wow, do all Japanese families act like local families like in Hawaii? Then I scrolled down and read the comments and read Lapahoehoe and thought, Ahh, no wonder... Your grandparents look so familiar to me, like I know them. I've lived here for 30 yrs so maybe I have seen them around. They are so cute and adorable.
@Caritaira8 жыл бұрын
+Indigo Blueviolet Yes they lived in Laupahoehoe and in Hilo for most of their life. They moved to Oahu in 2006 to be with the rest of our family. You've probably seen them around since Hawaii is so small. Anyway, thank you for watching! And I'll let my grandma read this comment.
@indigoblueviolet8 жыл бұрын
ok thanks...you are blessed to have them...they're so sweet. Having lived away from Hilo and in the mainland, I can appreciate the people from Hilo a lot more and realise not everyone everywhere is like them :)

I just found your videos, and I am enjoying watching the cooking. I especially love this nishime one as I am always trying to perfect mine. I grew up in Hawaii in Laupahoehoe and somehow found you through a Laupahoehoe group on FB (I think someone linked to your videos). I am planning on using this recipe to make nishime for New Years as long as I can find the ingredients here in South Carolina.
