ERTH103/Kazumine Kishi I have never been to Hanauma Bay and would like to take this opportunity to visit. 1, Hanauma Bay was formed when molten volcanic ash from an explosion about 32,000 years ago hardened. 2, The bay used to be a popular fishing spot for local residents. 3, The destruction caused by the blast created a new biological zone within the reef. 4, Balsamic is the most common rock in Hawaii, It was used to make weapons in the past. 5, The UHU fish crushes any rocks or coral they encounter.

Thank you for the great video! 5 things I learned: 1. Hanauma bay was formed by volcanic activity 32,000 years ago. 2. Hanauma Bay's education center has different rocks which can be found at Hanauma Bay. The native Hawaiians used Basaltic rocks in their tools and weapons. 3. Prior to 1956, there was a fringing reef stretching the bay, until bio weathering (human interference) caused the destruction of it. 4. The destruction of the part of the reef let new biodiversity to take hold in Hanauma Bay. 5. Parrot fish were once believed to be destroying the reefs, but actually promote healthy reef by preventing algae from smothering reef and are actually responsible for the output of sand.

I love this video. There were so much to learn! Here are 5 things I learned: 1. Hanauma bay was formed by a series of volcanic activities 32,000 years ago. 2. You can find a variety of rocks, such as basalt, lava, limestone, and tuff. 3. Hanauma bay was one of the popular fishing and picnicking parks for local people, but it was not used for swimming purpose at that time because there were only two lagoons that were surrounded by a nearly unbroken chain of shallow reef along the shoreline. 4. Tons of coral rocks were removed from the central portion of the Hanauma bay in 1956 when the city and county of Honolulu sold an easement of the Hanauma bay to Hawaiian telephone company who blew the strip through the fringing reef in order to create an undersea telephone cable. 5. There were two recorded sand restoration projects in 1970 and 1987. Sand was imported to build a wave barrier on the reef crests in 1970 and to close the 1956 cable trend and restore the beach . Mahalo for your video!

Thank you Shawn for this educational video! Five things I discovered: 1. Molten ash solidified and volcanic eruptions 32,000 years ago created Hanauma Bay. 2. Tuff makes up Hanauma Bay. 3. To install a telephone wire beneath the water, a piece of the bordering reef was torn through in 1956. 4. Sand from Kahuku was removed to rebuild the Bay's declining shoreline. 5. Hanauma Bay was once a well-liked fishing location.

1. I never realized Hanauma Bay’s iconic shape was the result of volcanic forces and wave erosion. It really gives a whole new appreciation for how powerful and creative nature can be. 2. The role of parrotfish in creating sand is mind-blowing! I never would have guessed that they could be responsible for so much sand and tropical beaches. 3. The transformation of Hanauma Bay after the 1956 cable project is such a great example of how nature can adapt and create new habitats even after human intervention. 4. The comparison between basaltic rock and lava rock was so intriguing. It was fascinating to see their weight and texture differences were due to gas bubbles. 5. I’ve visited Hanauma Bay before, but never knew the story behind its sand restoration projects. It’s amazing how much effort goes into preventing these natural creations Mahalo for sharing this video!

Thank you for the video! These are 5 things I learned from the video. 1. Hanauma Bay is made by volcanic activity 32000 years ago. 2. Lava rock is lighter than basalt rock. Basalt rock is dense and solid. 3. Tuff is the volcanic ash hardened due to a natural cementing process. 4. Back in 1956, Hanauma Bay was one of the favorite fishing and picnicking parks for people in Hawaii. 5. In 1970, the city and county of Honolulu imported sand to build a wave barrier and the sand origin is still unknown.

Shawn's presentation was great. Here are some things I can take with me today about Hanauma Bay. 1. Hanauma Bay has had 2 sand restoration projects due to erosion. 2. The north surrounding walls of the bay are made out of tuff. Basalt and choral are embedded within the tuff. 3. The sand is different. On one side, you have fine sand with grains of basalt, coral, and shells. Conversely, the sand is more coarse, with larger basalt, coral, and sediment particles. It is also duller in color. 4. You may see parrot fish or uhu, also known as the sand maker. A large parrot fish can make over a ton of sand each year. 5. Hanauma Bay was created about 32,000 years ago due to a series of explosions that created a hydromagmatic blast when a volcanic vent opened up underwater.

Thank you for great video! 5 things i learned 1. Hanauma bay is made up of the molten ash that settled and hardened during a series of violent explosions 32,000 years ago. 2. The ash chemically cemented together over time to create the tough cone a rise in sea leavel and wave erosion is the reason for the break in the cone which filled with ocean water to creat hanauma bay. 3. Tough is the volcanic ash that hardened due to a natural cementing process this is what hanauma bay is made of and we can see the fragments of basalt and coral embedded into the tuff which has a resemblance to sandstone. 4. In 1956, hanauma bay had already become one of the favorite fishing and picnicking parks for the people of Hawaii. 5. The loose rubble left by the blasting became a habitat for a host of small invertebrates and fishes who feed on them many of which had not lived inside the reef in numbers prior to the blast.

I loved the video! 1. Hanauma Bay was formed by volcanic activity 32,000 years ago, mainly consisting of tuff, a hardened volcanic ash. 2. A new habitat for marine life developed from the rubble of a 1956 blast, enriching the bay's ecosystem. 3. The bay saw two sand restoration efforts in 1970 and 1987 to mitigate erosion and repair damage. 4. Its fine sand is a mix of basalt, coral, and sea creature shells, reflecting a diverse marine environment. 5. Despite its beauty, Hanauma Bay struggles with pollution from debris and waste on its shores.

Wow! Despite living here my whole life this was my first time really learning about Hanauma Bay. Thank you for sharing! 1. Hydromagmatic blast occurred when a volcanic vent opened up under water , this explosion blew up steam, hit gasses, coral, and fine ash which coved the area which cemented over time and created the tuff cone, rise of sea level, and wave erosion 2. Types of rocks found here: basaltic (more dense and solid)and lava (light in weight and dense) rocks 3. In 1956, Honolulu sold an easement through the bay to the Hawaiian telephone company for the first leg of a new trans-pacific undersea telephone cable. With this they blew a 200ft wide strip through the reef 4. With the blast came a new biological zone and there were more hiding spots for animals from the blown up pieces of rocks and coral 5. 2 recorded sand restoration projects: 1970 (imported sand to build a wave barrier and the reef crest to close the blown up area from 1956) & 1987 (imported sand from Kahuku to restore sand from erosion)

Aloha Dr. Gasdar and Shawn, Fantastic presentation! Here are some things I learned. 1. Hanauma bay was created 32,000 years ago in a series of violent eruptions. 2. Hydromagmatic balsts occurred when a volcanic vent opened up under water, blowing up steam, coral, and rock which cemented over time into the cinder cone. 3. Rising sea level and wave erosion caused the break in the cone, forming Haunama Bay. 4. The cemented ash in Haunama Bay is called Tuff, and rocks and coral can be found with it. 5. In 1956 the City and County of Honoulu sold an easement in the bay to the Hawaiian Telephone Company for the first section of a trans-pacific undersea telephone cable and Hawaiian Dredging was contracted to blow a wide section of the coral reef, destroying part of this ecosystem and toxifying the environment with oil. 6. The rubble from the channel eventually provided firtle grounds for a variety of sea life, not present prior. Mahalo Shawn for your great work. John B.

This video was amazing! So informative! I really learned a lot that I did not already know, despite having lived here for over a decade, and having been to Hanauma Bay many, many times. 1. Hanauma Bay is made of molten ash that settled and hardened during volcanic explosions 32,000 years ago! 2. Hanauma Bay was popular as a fishing and picnicking spot through the 1950s; however, swimming was not common. This changed in 1956 when C&C Honolulu sold an easement through the bay to install an underwater telephone line. As part of the installation, Hawaiian Dredging blew a 200-ft.-wide strip through the reef, creating the "center" of the bay. This destroyed coral and polluted the bay with oil. 3. On a more positive note regarding the underwater cable installation (above), the rubble diversified the ecosystem and provided an opportunity for new life to enter Hanauma Bay. The bay became home to small invertebrates, fish, and other sea creatures, unlike before, now that they had ample space, protective habitats, and a channel to come and go from the bay to the ocean. 4. Like other beaches on O'ahu, such as nearby Waikiki, Hanauma Bay has undergone sand restoration projects due to beach erosion. Two recorded projects include 1970, from which the sand's origin is unknown, and 1997 when sand from Kahuku was imported into the bay. 5. Depending on where you stand at the bay, it can feel like a very different environment, with some areas even having different-colored or coarser sand than others. An abundant material that can be found around the bay, as the surrounding walls are made of it, is called "tuff," which is volcanic ash that is hardened due to a natural cementing process. Tuff contains fragments of basalt and coral and resembles sandstone. Mahalo 🤙

Mahalo for the video on Hanauma Bay! 1. Hanauma Bay was created from an underwater eruption 2. Rocks at Hanauma Bay include basaltic, lava, tuff, etc.; lava rocks are lighter compared to basalt because of the amount of gas bubbles found in volcanic rocks 3. The coral at Hanauma Bay has a thin outer layer, and will leave a hard skeleton as it grows 4. Hanauma Bay was initially popular for fishing, but not for swimming 5. After the construction blast in the 1950s, it opened up a new environment + channel in the reef for different species

1. This video contained a lot of really great information. 2. I really liked the images and layout of the presentation. 3. I've lived on 'Oahu my whole life, but have never been to Hanauma Bay. Since I'm not one to really go out. 4. I think it's pretty sad that they needed to get sand from kahuku, in order to restore Hanama Bay 5. The voice of the presenter was really clear, and everything was straight to the point.

Very informative! 1. Hanauma Bay was created 32,000 years ago. 2. The Bay is made up of many different types rock. 3. 1956, the city/county allowed the telephone company to place a 200 ft. Strip of underground telephone cable. This ran through the middle of the reef. 3. Hanauma Bay has had a couple restoration projects where sand was imported due to beach erosion. 4. Koko Crater sits behind the bay. 5. Great place to snorkel. Several different Parrotfish can be seen here.
