Im pretty sure that because the whale is mentioned during the part where the protagonist dies its saying that the protagonist is now a whale sailing the sea's (most people say he drowned so im taking that idea) and the whole "You look quite divine tonight" is probably him actually seeing his lover again

The interpretation I like most about Murders is that Simon murdered his girlfriend after going insane (yes this means Simon wasn't faking insanity in the mind electric) and has no recollection of murdering her so he goes to the fountain of infinite mirrors (which I believe represents the unknowable truth) to find out who killed her but finds that he killed her. He is filled with grief and guilt (Murders of murderers living in fear of it) as well as anger and disappointment (all for nothing at all). The next two songs represent what happens after murders, in Space Station Level 7 the girl goes to heaven and in the mind electric Simon gets electro shock therapy. Other notes: - The girl's fate is foreshadowed at the start of the song at the line (she found the erlking, the lover,) An erlking is a European folklore creature that stalks children who stay in the woods too long and kills them with a single touch - I think the whitewood represents innocence and the blackwood represents loss of innocence - I believe Simon learns the truth at 2:41 which is represented by the seemingly random change of tone from this very dark song to classical then back to dark followed by the line "all for nothing at all" - "tree falling no one would hear" might be a metaphor for the girl's death in the forest that no one could hear/see - The first and last lines of the song represent Simon not knowing and then finding out the truth "He was in the forest looking to see the trees but none were there" (First lyric) "I was in the forest looking to see the trees but none were there" (last lyric) I think given the context of the rest of the album and murder's placement in the album this is the best interpretation i've heard. I love the entire album but Murders is really interesting to me because imo it is when the album truly becomes a story, not just a bunch of songs randomly thrown together. Let me know if you have a different view on it, i'd love to hear it!

the song "Dream Sweet in Sea Major" is about, like you said, a man sailing the sea and being captured by the siren's voice. I believe the whale is just another name to that person, since at that point of the song he is already swimming towards the beautiful siren, and now he is talking to them a moment before he drowns and dies. He says: you're delights surround us as we sail Signed, yours truly, the whale - so he and the other whales are the people captured by the siren's voice, swimming towards her. The song describes it as a beautiful experiance of love since its from the 'whale's' point of view, he feels like he's flying towards his love, but in reality, he's dying.

literally, the first time I heard this song was back when I had to read Moby Dick for english class (yes, it was a very long book), so I've always associated the two with each other. Both the song and the book have a deep sense of loneliness. The first line "alone at the edge of a universe humming a tune" is just one example. In Melville's book, captain Ahab is on a doomed quest to find the whale; and it's as if nothing else in Ahab's world exists except himself and the whale because of his hyperfixation on revenge. In a way he is perpetually lost at sea because his life (and the meaning of it) is incomplete without this monster whale. and i find that incredible sad. just like joe hawley's song feels sad (it could be due to the echo in his voice plus the melody itself) I doubt that Joe made this connection on purpose, but I still like to think about it. great video btw

“the whale” may also be a nod to the legend of zelda link’s awakening, specifically the wind fish, who has the appearence of a whale. The whole story of the game may be an inspiration to the story of hawaii part ii, and the music of zelda games, like that of the wind waker most definitely inspired some of the album’s melodies

I don't really see why Simon must be dead at the end of the song? In my head he just died after he was devoured by the whale, or after he drowns dunno. He became insane after The Mind eletric and lost himself in the Labyrinth. Remembers about his dead girlfriend (That he killed in murderers) during Time Machine. And during Stranded Lullaby he becomes part of a shipwreck and start to float aimless at the sea THats when Dream suite starts the whale could only be what he saw after a shipwreck or even something out of his crazy mind, since he even hears Sirens At least thats how i see it

Very good essay! One thing though, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the thought of the characters coming back as whales! After all, in “Isle unto Thyself” Simon says “Why did we deserved to be revived?” Also, in “White Ball”, they say “Today is renewed, Is reborn, Each day, I am new I am yours” and “Marble Gods tango circles in space, Round the already dead, Hung by staircase.” I believe the most convincing evidence that the lovers have at least been reborn is the fact that “Space Station 7,” when translated, is actually about departure from heaven!
@kowalski2385 Жыл бұрын
Glad I found this, and as for me, my first impressions were "This is DELIGHTFULLY HORRIFYING!!" I drew much speculation from lovecraftian themes! The Whale being an incredible being, enormous, incomprehensible and a sort of adventure Godlike being. The album makes me think of a date at the end of the universe, trapped in eternity with the Whale. "You'll live forever tonight" "it feels like flying but maybe we're dying" "Believe me darling, the stars were meant for falling". Not in order, but all striking to me, and the funny French esthetic of being romantic, is a wonderful touch. I really love creepypastas and redditnosleep, as well as SCP where the freaky and unexplainable things occur, where not all happenings derive from historical or mythological aspects. At least in meaning.

I know this video is like a year old, but I just want to say that I thought the whale was Simon, as implied in the music video for Isle Unto Thyself. We follow a whale evolving before eventually reuniting with an octopus it loves. Your interpretation is cool too, thats just how I saw it.

Very great video! I find much of the beauty in Hawaii Part ii, is that every listener can have different interpretations and how something as small as one line can lead to a deep dive of research
@RoyaleFlamingo2 жыл бұрын
I love that you decided to deep dive into something so small within the album it's so fun to pick at every little detail of hawaii: part II. And I agree the vagueness and weirdness of the album is what makes it amazing. It's so vague but so jam packed at the same time and that's why it's great. There's so many ways to interpret the songs because there is no real meaning. You'll never get to know the reality of every lyric so you're free to interpret and relate to it however you want. There's so many little details of every part of Hawaii: part II whether it be the lyrics or the actual music in the back. You can make so many scenarios and scenes in your head about how the song goes and would look within a real life situation, in which I love doing. Honestly, just every little bit about the album is just so strange and cool because there's so much work put into it with references and the melodies. I especially love The Mind Electric as it's so confusing you have no idea what's going on within the song until you actually get to listen to it and interpret all the weird messages and the weird cuts between the songs. It's so violent with the loud and confusing beat and that's why I love it so much. And again you are able to just interpret everything within the songs and pick out every little detail of it and that's why it's so much fun to listen to!

3 things of note: 1. A hidden music video for isle unto thyself where the main character is represented as a whale who goes through metamorphosis to overcome changing environments. I am 93.527% sure that this is the whale Joe referred to in DSiSM. 2. One of the most important things about theory crafting that a lot of casual people theorizing about Hawaii Pt II neglect doing is once having a hypothesis, rechecking over and over again with the source material of the rest of the album to see if any previous interpretations changed with a new theory. It’s not necessarily a theory, but without supporting evidence from the other songs, it can be difficult to sell a theory, and a lot of information that is just assumed in mass is correct is a lot more flimsy than you believe. For example, Dream Sweet in Sea Major has a contextual meaning and a non contextual meaning, and they tend to be interchanged. As a standalone piece it seems to be about a sailor who is called by sirens and sinks his ship. A shallow meaning like this comes from a lack of context for seemingly unrelated lyrics that go nowhere in the song because it all ends here, and you *cannot take the lyrics out of context!* Here’s an interesting fact, it has been studied that as long as *7* minutes after someone is declared dead, brain activity is still observed. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that after the long build up to nothing at the end of the 7 minute song represents Simon’s anticipation of what comes after death as he becomes fully dead, but you wouldn’t know that if you took every detail out of context and just assumed he was at literal sea, instead of a metaphor because why would the answer be so straightforward now after an entire album of ambiguity and vague details? 3: So what exactly is the meaning? To answer that I want to ask how many distinct lyrical sections are in DSiSM, and by that I mean any times where there is a distinguishable difference between groups of lyrics. The answer to that is 11, and by excluding DSiSM itself and including Variations on a Cloud, you get 11 sections for 11 songs, that either take the lyrics,(“we are beyond a bow” -> Black Rainbows “above a blinding star” -> Isle unto thyself) melody, (Introduction to the Snow, Variations on a Cloud), straight up drop the title of the song(murders), be completely obvious even on first listen(Space Station Level 7) and the rest can figured out by relating t the lyrics to the meaning of the remaining songs. I am still working out the details of what this means including the order of them, but I believe that this can be used as a key for the chronological order of the album just backwards because we gotta remember that our only vantage point is from inside the mind of Simon, and anytime we go outside of that is likely him imagining what goes on without him. Make of this what you will or ignore it, I just needed to get this down somewhere where someone will see it. Let me know your skepticism, test my theory, I don’t care if I’m wrong here if that means I get closer to uncovering the full meaning of Miracles Musical!

Jonah and the whale *is* actually about the afterlife in a way. In Christianity, the story is seen as a foreshadowing/foretelling Jesus' death and resurrection three days later. Symbolic stories like this are seen throughout the Bible and have meaning in both Jewish and Christian traditions.Since it's about death and return, I don't think it fits your thesis, but I thought I'd offer some more context to the story.

I personally think Simon is the Whale. In the music video for Isle unto Thyself, the whale is our protagonist character, who we follow as he makes changes and ultimately reconnects with the octopus (who I'd like to think is his girl. The victim of his psychotic break, his murder victim.). I think the violent key smashing is a slight allusion to Murders, which makes sense with the idea I've presented her. He's saying the woman he's murdered, now that he's in the afterlife, looks beautiful, and now that life and existence is whatever, they can be together again. However, in her response, the next verse, the female character let's him know "we will be atoning" meaning she doesn't forgive him, even if he was insane, he still killed her for no reason, and she doesn't have to stand with that. I would write more, but im not one for mile-long comments.

The game OFF has a similar issue in which halfway through climbing a tower to reach the second boss of the game, a giant floating whale appears in a combat encounter and does absolutely nothing. The creator has given no explanation as to why it's there. Sometimes artists just put whales in inexplicable places cause they feel like it. (Obviously the theories here carry a lot more weight, I just think it's funny that this is now the second thing I've gotten really into that just has a whale in a weird spot for seemingly no reason)

New and improved interpretation of Hawaii part ii + ruler of everything and variations on the clouds. Before we start this is the backstory on how I found these, found the ruler of everything first then mind electric second but in a closet time period to it. I saw an explanation by the ruler of everything which explained the basic frame of the entire story like 2 years from the current writing of this explanation. This is what the songwriter got its inspiration from with the story and using some of his unused unfinished songs and incorporated them into the album. If you think of the ruler of everything as a demo, inspiration, and enactment of the man’s feelings throughout all of it (explanation of ruler of everything will be at the end). I found how the song and the albums themes and mood were overall similar then I dug deeper for the explanation for Hawaii which I think are false, which led me even deeper to my explanation here so please read and if you have any discrepancies please tell. I believe that the Hawaii part ii is a album detailing the story of a man who was cursed with immortality which is a curse bestowed upon him with the added factor of the passing time degrading his mind and the alter ego of himself infecting his mind and causing the death of his lover. The following paragraphs will detail how this interpretation is a suitable story for the album. The first song “Introduction to the snow” shows him reminiscing on his past life as he floats on the precipice of all eternity when everything fades away as he gazes upon the stars and his mind detailing how beautiful and bitter it is. The second song “Isle Unto Thyself” starts us off with an ethereal sounding chant that might have been the goddess he and his lover worshiped or himself reminiscing on the past. Then it cuts to the man detailing how he met the love of his life and like the quote “why would it matter” doubting why and how it all started or maybe him being hesitant of love and how it may hurt him. The song I believe details his love and journey with her and him questioning if the memory was real then the song lyrics details on how when he was on the brink off death “Bled on the ground” he met the god and he was given the immortality he wanted and his alter ego too unbeknownst to them it would be a curse. Next it describes how the universe passed through and how he describes it and how it all died and him questioning his humanity as he ponders life. The song “Black Rainbows” is sung by the woman and is set in what I believe is Hawaii where the 2 lovers met and how they came upon Stella Octangula which basically defines a god(search it up and the theory of its meaning) the song follows how they saw the light that it shown and the possibilities and how beautiful their love and “it” was. (Btw the songs if you listen in order mix like a musical flowing together perfectly ) The next song white ball details a tango both physically and metaphorically kinda where they danced and detail about the future of the stars and eternity and their love together but later on it’s only him who lives forever. This song “Murders'' is a song shows the ego shows how it depicted of the love and how it pessimistically saw it and how he was in the middle and how all it wanted was the fountain of infinite mirrors which basically means immortality and how the ego took control and killed the love of his life and how at the end he gains control and spirals down into his depths of tragedy. The next song is the Japanese song which is translated to space station level 7 which basically details how humans evolved into going into space what it looks like but level 7 is a gate a final gate to heaven which the song constantly chants which leads me to believe that the man lives and is looking for heaven where his lover is and constantly looking for death. The song “Mind Electric” depicts how he was caught for killing his lover and how he is in court pleading to the court of his alter ego which they sentence him to death and how he depicts his degrading mind. And with his sentence he is sentenced to electric chair and how he depicts the electric corses through his brain and how his alter ego is becoming more present in his mind commenting on how the surfs work the ground and he plays with his mind and how it or him prays for it to end the torture and suffering. Next song is Labyrinth which describes how his mind is spinning and how he’s trying to get out and how now he feels like his past lover is following and has already gone to level 7 aka heaven. The rapper is the man and his mind as he acknowledges how he is running from the people trying to kill him and how he is in fear of his alter ego/god may cause the death of more and how he is trapped in this cycle. The song “Time Machine” is showing how he is now in the future waiting for the release of life and how he regrets what the ego has done, possibly conquered the ego or fused together because the other thoughts did not appear in the song. It follows his desire to go back with a Time Machine which he is awaiting to appear so he can go back and prevent all of it. The song “Stranded Lullaby” is detailing on him being stranded out in space and time and I believe he finally conquered his ego but became numb to the idea of basically everything with the only remaining shard of him being his lover and he is “lost at sea” or he has finally came to terms with his alter ego and he questions why it did what it did and why it was so lonely. The final song is “Dream Sweet in Sea Major” the final song based on my interpretation is where he finally conquered the ego and becomes and the god finally brings him the the promised land when he floated through space and finally reached level 7 where he finally is reunited with his lover as he savor the moment and the moment forever where the verses describe them going back into Hawaii and where they relive their love and what is to come as they love within heaven which he reached and the final verse he says good bye to Hawaii which is a representation of the ego torture and what he felt to finally get their as he grows and anew and will spend forever in eternity with his love. This is what I believe the album means in most sense. I believe the conclusion I detailed is what actually finally happened in that marvelous story which was detailed in the album Hawaii part ii. Now unto ruler of everything, before explaining remember that ruler of everything was way before and the ground for Hawaii part ii. The song starts out with “Juno was mad he knew he’d been had so he shot at the sun with a gun…” (please read lyrics to understand what i'm saying) implying that Juno/Man was mad because he got tricked into living forever causing for him to lose his loved ones, have the devil/ruler of time/ ruler of everything in the end being in his consciousness(like the alter ego) with its commentary and low tone. The song mentions the sun and how life expanded out of it and around it into the galaxy and the sun literally a god was there with Juno and how the sun knew of the deal he made and could have stopped him. “Every end of a time is another begun” is how Juno saw the passing of time, “you understand mechanical hands are the ruler of everything” mechanical hands being the hands on a clock and how time rules everything, and “do you like how I dance ect ect of the verse” basically states how Juno saw how man was obsessive over how they look talked walked and the view of other for their approvment and how they don’t care that they may “die soon” or disintegrate into chalk. The rest is fodder basically meaning he just bumbled around without meaning and how the time deity criticizes but emphasizes with him. Variations on a cloud first thing straight is not connected to Hawaii part ii or ruler of everything. Blatant reference to their song and overall theme but not connected. Also this supports why I think the ruler of everything is to be taken into consideration when talking about Hawaii part ii. Song starts out with 2 singers both the same person optimistic high tuned awaiting and departing for the future and seeing the beauty of it and the one who doesn’t want to leave the world and what they made and how it’s disappearing in a basic sense. The context is how basically 9/11 yada yada but in 9/11 people were getting burned to death and were stuck onto so people saw as these people were jumping off holding hands to their death which is what the singer is detailing their thoughts and life as it flashes before their eyes “a little bit of magic to end the world”. You can relate the lyrics to this no need to elaborate it shows how he tells of his mother and friends and how they were to him, what he built up how it’s crashing down, and how he/optimistic one accepts it how the memories keep on coming back and coming back as he falls to his death but happy and accept for what is to be for the life he lived and what may lay ahead. Very good song too. I believe this song was also a passion project to the viewers who understand it like a wrap up and gift for a final departure. And so too with these songs for it wraps up the explanation of this song and the rest of all of this.

Thank you for putting this together, great video, I love this album . . and I was thinking the mythological Siren looked like Simon's dead lover, as it lures him to a watery death/lifetime together? I heard Joe referred to himself as Whale in high school or on social media a while back? Love the line "Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me"

In the music video for Isle Unto Thy Self the main character is a whale. Maybe it was more autobiographical in a metaphorical sense than we thought?

Not very relavent to the video, but I feel like sharing because it's one of my favorite words: A spirit or God who guides the dead to the afterlife is known as a Psychopomp.

Actually, i think the whale is the main character in the album, who is kind of a self insert of Joe into the story, the music video for Isle Unto Thyself follows a whale which would represent they both, and thats also explains the mind electric and the overall schizophrenia themes of the album, as Joe is known for having this condition

I always thought of the whale being whoever simon's love was with in the forest. And to me it always sounded like Joe was putting on his French accent to add on to that. The name drop and music makes it feel like a twist, and after the music descends into a sadder tone, it seemed like he was going to heaven, but instead he's going to hell for his crimes, to a star above the sun

Although it looks like you put a lot of effort into your research, the answer was right under your nose the entire time. "The Whale" is simon, it is our main character. This can easily be deducted from the Isle unto thyself Music video, where our main character is represented as the Whale and his lover Represented as an Octopus. And the part in Dream sweet in sea Major where our main character says "Signed yours truly the Whale" is where is he has drifted out of sleep while lost at sea, and is confusing the siren for his lover.
