In this series, Lopaka brings you some of Hawaii's Most Haunted places.
Master storyteller, Lopaka Kapanui, brings to life the feared Nightmarchers, the goddess Pele, Menehune, e‘epa, mo‘o and more. But… Hawaiian deities and spirits aren’t the only things residing in this island paradise. Here is also where the Japanese dog demons, the inu-gami, are sent to ruin the lives of unsuspecting families. Here is where the Filipino vampire-like creature, the aswang, roams in search of her next victim. And here is where the Portuguese witch, the feiteceira, spins her spells and curses at her whim. Rich in culture and traditions, these islands are overflowing with stories of ghosts and hauntings, creatures and curses. Lopaka is the keeper of these stories.
Beyond the cool, blue waters and balmy trade winds of our idealistic paradise is the thin veil which separates our world from the place where shadows talk back. Spirits, Ghosts, Legends, Facts... Experience the Hawaii most don't see every day.

Would you be kind enough to share any of your experiences, Ms. Sumang? I'd love to read/hear any that you decide to tell but I know these sorts of experiences are very powerful and personal and sometimes best left unspoken about.

I think it's stories like these that teach us history but also reminds us the importance of respect. I've gone on ghost investigations on the mainland and sadly, I have not yet encountered anyone who could tell stories like Lopaka or Glen.

I was on a work travel assignment living in Koloa town in 2010, and worked 3-11pm. I'd drive back to my apartment through Tree Tunnel Road every night, and it was always a bit creepy! No encounters (except wild pigs on the road), though. I've lived on Kauai since 2016, and I have always wondered why so many local businesses and events open with a traditional Hawaiian blessing - now I think I know why! There are so many undiscovered and desecrated gravesites on these islands. Respect.

I love your haunting stories.. spirits are alive. The state still has not learned from their disrespectful actions and use iwi kupuna sand from Maui for the fail rail system. I will never ride it because my na'au tells me it's cursed... the concrete is already cracking in a handful of area's and the rail isn't done yet. They built part of the rail on old Rice Paddy Lands.. not a good idea at all. TY for bringing up the subject of "iwi kupuna."

Oooooooh, Lopaka, now you visiting my old haunts. Try go thru the tunnel of trees between midnight and one. Take some pork with you. Hope and pray you no see the white lady. She going stop you, n kill your car till you give her some. Once you share, your car going start up again, and you can go. It was high school prom night, we were driving home thru the tunnel of trees. Thinking about the while lady. Then we heard a noise in the back seat, like a squeak. Looking in the rear view mirror it was completely white!! That scared the bejeezus out of us. We floored the gas, and hauled ass outta there!!! Then we looked back again, and the white was still in the back seat. Again we freaked out. But then realized we didn't have any pork with us.....so why is she there??? Turns out it was a bunch of white balloons we took home from the prom!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 Whew!!!! Safe.

@@sammatsusaka823 The story I just said was for real. But we neva did try going thru the tunnel after midnight WITH pork. That is the legend I grew up hearing. And was never brave enough to try it out. But the prom story is true. But if you do try it, let me know what happen. I DO believe in the spirit realm. Hawaii is a very haunted state.

I lived in Koloa before Iniki. I would body surf at Brenekes nearly everyday. One night a spirit tried to push into my chest. It was dark, male energy wearing some kind of hat. I tried to push it away but it was without physical form. It went away and i sat up. The house was near that ill fated hotel.

My family lived for a year near the area where the hotel would later be built. I never experienced anything unusual. However, some friends warned my brother and me that the area where the hotel was built later on was kapu. They did not explain.

Lived in Koloa for four years. Every time I left to go back to the mainland as soon as I got in the plane I would start crying. I don’t mean a little bit I mean really crying tears running down my cheeks into my clothing. My kids were young adults and they were with me and they also thought that was very strange because I never cry. But it was like they were crying because I was leaving.

Do you know what would make a VERY LOUD, like a door slamming? Some people tell me that's a Portal closing. I didn't know Hawaii had such a thing. But it made me scared, I left the area. I didn't run, because you cannot run down the mountain. I talked to this guy with his dog (Boxer) He said 1 day he heard that same noise 1 late afternoon. He thought it was a truck door on the ridge. Not even possible, a gun shot can be heard. But not as loud as if it's like 10 feet from you. Too bad Hawaii doesn't have Crypto animals. Anyone seen Barn Yard Swifts on Oahu? Want to see them? Newtown had them, but the Zipline people locked the gate. But I've seen them on the ridge of Halawa Valley Ridge and Moanalua Valley Ridge. (early morning like 8 or 9am) small birds gliding through the air catching bugs to eat. I forget, but plenty of GHOSTS at Honolulu Airport. Talk to Security and the Janitors. I experienced some mild ghosts there myself. How does GHOSTS know your name?

My 2nd great grandmother Mary kauihanohano luahiwa Nicholas was born I koloa.. I guess so was my 3rd great grandmother ululani kololina hipa and probably many of my ancestors prior.. I've never been there.. I hope to some day.. I like to feel spirits.. I was actually lead to Hawaii from Washington state where I was born and raised.. by spirits I guess.. plus when I was 17 I was told to come here and find a stone under the lava by 4 supposed angels.. this was before I even knew I was part Hawaiian let alone Portuguese and had family history here.. I didn't even believe it until recently when I got a dna test via ancestry.. plus I built my family tree on their website.. so now i guess it makes sense.. anywho.. I just want to go there and feel the spirits.. commune with my ancestors and learn more.. because I'm pretty sure that stone I was supposed to find under the lava that those supposed angels told me to find is in fact hi'iaka.. who pele brought here as a stone egg am I wrong.? I think I know what answers I'm looking for but I need confirmation.. some day I will get there..

Mr.Lopaka, Did not get a reply on the Headless priest of Hakimo rd of Nanakuli...when growing up on Hakimo Rd my grandmother would always make sure we were in the house before dark. Folks living on Hakimo road would often talk about siting's of the headless priest, but no one seems to know where this Ledgen or siting's came from. Could you investigate and shed some light on this story? Mahalo Nui
