Big Island Video News is almost always right on. You might want to make this and KHON2 your main place for lava news. I've seen a few others, and they simply are not to be trusted. This has led me to be even more leery of counting on them for real, honest news about anything else. No one has been killed by the lava, so that's a good thing.

It's not sad, it's nature doing what it does. That's how Hawaii was made in the first place, now we are witnessing the island changing and growing. I don't feel sorry for a house being lost that was built on a volcano.

Thank you for the update from CD. This phase of the eruption has been very interesting to see. It is unfortunate that these communities were in the low ground where the lava had to flow. It is my understanding that Fissure 8 has been putting out a greater volume of lava than Pu'u O'o did during its most vigorous eruption. It was clear from the earthquake activity under the summit that there was magma coming up along the conduit from the hot spot, but rather than erupting up there, it was drained away along the tubes deep under the rift zone, with most of it coming up at Fissure 8.

I think it's interesting that the lava is coming from far away at fissure 8, and it makes a right turn at Kapoho crater. This was the crater formed at the source of the 1960 eruption. So the old crater is cold but today's lava flowed over to it and went around it.

Good coverage. I am reminded of a problem lava flow in Iceland, where they pumped great amounts of seawater onto the edge of a lava flow to harden it into a dam wall. It saved the town. I wonder if some of the last remaining "pockets" of houses near the beach could use the same technique.
@janettaschuch3591

Ray Watson -- not with warm sea water. Iceland sea water is always some of the coldest.
@jackstrada5263
@jackstrada5263 6 жыл бұрын
Ray Watson Yes they could have and should have done this starting back when Kalapana, 10x more amazing than Kapoho, got taken out. I guess it's ok to build fishponds and divert rivers to feed water to taro fields but it's forbidden to alter a lava flow to save the only accessible part of the coastline.
@dnomyarnostaw
@dnomyarnostaw 6 жыл бұрын
Good point. Tropical water can be up to 30d C, but of course Arctic water is close to 1dC. Even so, when the Lava is about 1,200dC it doesn't seem that critical. Certainly, it solidifies when it hits the Ocean water as we can see.
@dnomyarnostaw

Jack - I can see some logic in not using fresh water, but there is plenty of sea water near the coast, as I mentioned.

Learn from mistakes. I don't know who went into coast region to warn and advise but seems practical to take names and check them off at roadblocks when leaving if wanting to make sure residents are safe. Hearing answers like not sure how many are in there I just wonder if it was police or CD that did the door to door. If so, what the heck guys.

The United States Federal Government is obligated to compensate them for property loss until they can be relocated safely. The evacuees are not liable for the decisions of state and/or federal authorities who were fully aware of the high probability of natural disasters in those regions prior to zoning of land.

Fred Norman - I'm quite certain that those who lost their homes aren't sitting around waiting for the county or state to supply them with new homes. Perhaps you also don't realize that for the people here, if they have friends or relatives, they go there, and all the ohana live together for awhile.

Tourism is hurting on the Big Island. The last thing hotels can do is give away free rooms. County and state finances are wearing thin. Federal funds will be needed to help many of the people. I am sure government is working to get a FEMA declaration for emergency funding.

The Hawaii Files Channel: If tourism is hurting then there must be plenty of rooms free. It's when tourism is booming that I could understand hotels not being able to afford any space. I can't believe all Americans think like the toddler-in-chief; surely some hotels are run by adults who understand that it could as easily have been their hotel under lava and local people inviting into their homes the displaced guests.
