That was one of the best updates I've seen. The pictures were great and really did help to clarify whats happening there. I liked that you had a sign language interpreter there with you. Perhaps in the future you could have the interpreter in a little box in the corner of the screen so when you cut away from the lecture to show video the information could still be available for deaf viewers. Again, that information was presented very well, great update!

@charliemoody71686 жыл бұрын
Being over an actual hotspot, Hawaii is made of basalt: that’s what Hawaiian lava hardens into, and its more or less typical of such places. Guatemala and the rest of the eastern arc of the pacific rim, does not produce basalt; the magma is made from crustal material and hardens in to a much different kind of rock, called andesite. Where basaltic magma swells and pours out, andesitic magma tends to explode out, in simple terms, because andesite breaks before it melts. ...and nobody got called a cunt. Go, me.

I remember her asking , “but where’s the lava ?” Strange to think the whole area is no longer there. Either it’s sitting at the bottom of the vent, or more likely blown to ash .
@luv2travel20006 жыл бұрын
Has this been considered: From Fissue 8, break the lava levy that is closest to the F3 & F4 or the area that once was Pohoiki Road so the lava flows down and joins up with the lava rivers going south. The east direction has been so destructive and still has many more homes at risk. But to the south it looks like there is a large forest reserve area as well as the current lava flows.

@mikkolaine48836 жыл бұрын
This is happening above the old magma channel. They have stated that the ground hasn't moved the way that any slump could occur.
@eyesopen54696 жыл бұрын
You're thinking of the Hilina fault (the great crack). The Hilina slump is already in the ocean. It's following the Puna Ridge and the rift zone running east.
@dontask68636 жыл бұрын
And where did they state that Mikko? Because I just heard this scientist state the southern slope of Kīlauea moved meters. Guess what the southern slope is of Kīlauea...the Hilina Slump.

Don't ask the Hilina slump is already in the ocean. There is only the Hilina fault on the southern slope. Type Lo'ihi seamount into Google, check the images for Hilina slump. If the slope slides off into the ocean, it will be named something else. Hilina slump is now a Buzz word used by KZbinrs for fear mongering and attention.

So really, that summit falling in and widening is what he said is BAD. In comparison to ground cracks, that is where lava started coming out...interesting. Also, with all these cracks parallel to the shore, it sure looks like the south east of the island wants to detach and float away. First drown everything in lava and then break off the entire chunk. Wouldn't that suck!?

Kind of like a toilet bowl flushing, but rather than go through the nice smooth pipes to the main, the magma is making it's own path of least resistance. Explosions. Cracks. Lava. Deeper crater?

A question for Geologists - Given that 8 and 22 have produced significant flows and still are flowing is It possible that given in the past the islands have slowly moved northward could this be an early sign that these two will form their own micro Craters effectively pushing the shelf further out to sea?
@MikeB35426 жыл бұрын
ram64man Maybe...more likely this is typical behavior. Kileauea has been erupting for years, but the lava has been conveyed from the summit to vents along the ocean through lava tubes. My guess is that the fissuring is due to collapses of these lava tubes.
@joyleenpoortier74966 жыл бұрын

Right from the horses mouth, and you can’t do better than that. So we have the USGS overall view. I feel bad for those who have suffered losses from the growing disaster. I think the County CD Director has done a tremendous job of trying to stay ahead of things. He and others have been grinding with no breaks. The Mayor has equally involved and I understand that he has lost part or all of his home. The media has done a good job in keeping residents and anyone else well informed. So if fissure 8 gets plugged up; the main Kilauea summet caldera could explode? Where is the remaining 98% of the magma?
@ericraymond10146 жыл бұрын
We may never see it, the amount of lava left in the volcano doesn’t effect whether it will come out or not. It’s just an analysis of how much has come out already.
@therealkingrapcollection74266 жыл бұрын
Sorry i can answer that better than anyone.... the remaining 98% of lava is on top of a bunch of homes
@007johndog0076 жыл бұрын
Got 'em!!!!
@cameltrophy36 жыл бұрын
I think if 8 got plugged that one of the others down there would pick up, but yes. If all the fissures down there were plugged, the lava could come back towards Kilauea. Think of Lava like the water running down a windscreen: at the top of the screen there could be a strong stream of water but at the lower part the ends might trickle back and forth. Now think of that but with hot lava. It will run the path of least resistance, but it will wipe out anything in it's way. Also that 98% number that got thrown out was not really accurate. The magma chamber is fed from the core of the earth and that is not going to subside any time soon. Hawaii has been erupting for thousands of years, and it is not going to stop. But it is cool to watch. It is just damn awful that these are people's homes.

So there is a water table level. Is there a magma table level? is this all caused by Teutonic plates squeezing together?
@mikkolaine48836 жыл бұрын
You might mean tectonic plates? There is no magma table. There is only magma chamber underneath any volcano. A channel feeds them. Plates crashing doesn't creat volcanoes. The Alps doesn't have volcanoes tho they stand in the break line. Subductions zones are where oceanic plate goes under the continental plate. This action creates friction on the rock between. The secret incredient, water, steams so much it melts the rock that becomes magma. Magma pushes it's way to the surface when the pressure gathers. These volcanoes are explosive strato volcanoes like Krakatoa, Mt St Helens, Mt Rainier, Pinatubo and Tambora. Hawaii stands in the middle of Pasific Plate on a hot spot. There is a weak point in the plate where magma plume rises up from the mantle. Yellowstone is also this kind of but bigger. Iceland stands also on the hot spot and in the Middle Atlantic Ridge. There is very easy access for magma to come up. Canarian Islands stand also on a hotspot. Hotspot volcano behavior is determined by the magma type. Hawaii has very running and gas rich basalt. It releases the gas easily. This kind of magma erupts calmly as fountains and fast moving lava flows. Ryolitic magma from subduction zones is stickier and captivates gases. That makes them explosive.

He does not have more or less knowledge or insight, he is just offering information. That’s rude to imply that other USGS people are less knowledgeable when in reality volcanologists in general are learning a lot about volcano behavior from Kīlauea. It can end tomorrow or after 100 years. Nobody knows. Not even scientists.
@mikkolaine48836 жыл бұрын
This depends how high is the magma chamber. On higher it feeds the eruption longer before draining. It has been feeding Pu'u O'o for 35 years with high level lava lake on the summit. Magma erupting till this day is old magma. The beginning we saw slow lava that was stored there after 1955 eruption. Now it is erupting the magma originally from Pu'u O'o channel. Soon there will be the summit magma. That's why the flow has became faster since it is fresher and hotter.
@eyesopen54696 жыл бұрын
Mikko Laine I'm a planetary geologist and Spatial Analyst (G.I.S) major, I predicted this after the Japan quake swarm, the Peru quake X2. Which indicates the Pacific plate is on the move again. Movement of the plate means a change in the point of eruption. The magma chamber is fed by a larger magma plume under the Pacific plate, as the plate moves it forms new eruptions. I believe that this new eruption has tapped the source(the plume.) That's my theory.

Actually nobody can predict these events. They can seek the clues what is happening and the changes in the system tell something else might happen. They had clear signs in the beginning and they warned people. Thought that nobody has been killed. From now on they can't say anything but if nothing changes this thing can be going on like this very long time. It has been seen in the history of Kilauea.
