UPDATE: I had to cut out the end of the lesson since I used the wrong word for twelve, and I didn't want to confuse you all. Thanks @Slater McGee for catching it! Here are the CORRECTED examples for using the day divisions to indicated day or evening: 12 pm (12 noon) ka hola 'umikūmālua o ke awakea 12 am (12 midnight) ka hola 'umikūmālua o ke aumoe And some more examples :) 7 am ka hola 'ehiku o ke kakahiaka 7 pm ka hola 'ehiku o ke ahiahi

I came here because Duolingo doesn't explain grammar. And this video gives perfect understanding. Thanks so much!

Very helpful, certainly with analysing the structure of the sentences. I saw on Duolingo, I think, Sentences like "Kani ka hola 2" = it's 2 o' clock. And "kani ka hola" = it's time. Are those correct?

Very good question! So I mentioned in the video that "kani" is the verb to ring (like when bells in a clocktower ring on the hour). So, "kani ka hola" literally means, "rings the hour". It's definitely another way you can express time, similar to how we can say, "the clock strikes two". And you might especially use this phrase if it just turned that time. Say you were due to go to school at 7, and it just turns 7, you might say, "Kani ka hola 'ehiku! E hele kākou i ke kula!"

Aloha, e Laura! I see that again, as you mentioned, the time words are English-based I must say that I'm starting to get confused here 🤔 I wonder if it actually means that the Hawaiian we use today is kind of a "New Hawaiian" version, and a few hundered years ago the Hawaiian people used to use other worlds with a completly different structure After all, Hawaiian isn't a Germanic language (or even not Indo-European) so I really don't understand its strong similarity to English

Not sure if I missed something but on the last lesson that translates 12pm noon, why is it ka hola iwakaluakumalua and not umikumalua?

Oh my! That was a typo! I’ll have to see if I can edit the video 😬
