It's hard to tell when he is pranking with the sparks, but that hotel suite only had a subpanel with no main breaker. If a dead short is big and fast enough it will trip both the branch and the main, and possibly even further up. Then he would have been forced to break into that central electrical room to hide his tracks. Or get the hotel management involved. "I dunno what happened.."

8:11 - Over here, metal flush-boxes are RARE. They were basically discontinued as standard ages ago, although, you can still use them if you want. ALL the flush-boxes in the last 30-40 years, and all new installs, use plastic ones. Mind you, grub-screw type terminals, not just 'Wrap around and screw' type flat screw connections. 240v also, and an earth line and M.E.N. connection system. Not sure if they even use M.E.N. at all in American 110v systems. Most sockets and plugs seem to be two prong, with no earth line at all. I note the SOCKETS in USA allow for an earth pin, but it seems to be very rarely used. Over here, ALL appliances and wall sockets MUST have that third earth connection UNLESS the product is 'Double-insulated' - which is indicated by a double square symbol on the product if that is the case. Very entertaining video! :)

I mean the silicon in semiconductors isn't coming from sand either, it's usually mined and purified. The higher the purity of the starting material the less work you need for further purification.
@danial_amini
@danial_amini 2 жыл бұрын
@@InTimeTraveller from what I just researched on wiki & yt, either quartz or sand (silica sand obviously) is purified to metallurgical grade elemental silicon, and some of that is further purified into semiconductor or solar panel grade silicon (crystaline silicone). So yeah it doesn't come directly from sand, and it definitely doesn't come from a sand that has large amounts of calcium in it.

I think maintenance at that specific location for safety equipment maybe had some issues even before the world economic slowdown impacted vacation rental markets. For hotel rooms the primary things that make a room handicapped accessible are: switches and door handles at a lower height wider doorways grab bars in the tub area or a roll-in/walk-in shower Some hotels go above and beyond and do things like no cabinet under the sink to make it easier to reach.

In Australia, there was a perceived danger by authorities that someone may bend a knife at sufficient angle to get the handle out of the way. Then they may get that knife and potentially slide it into live pins of a power plug while it was still plugged in, without dislodging the plug. Then they may hang onto the knife long enough to get a jolt which may cause them to suddenly pull on the knife and knock the plug out. The authorities decided 1. Lets make all contacts more deeply recessed, so pins are not engaged if something the thickness of a knife is placed at the top of them. 2. Lets make all pins shorter for the same reason. 3. Lets make the thickness of the conducting pins significantly smaller, so plastic can surround the top of the pins where a knife may go. So we have gone from a perceived danger of a brief shock to people modifying knives to put across live plugs, to hundreds of fires each year from buzzing plugs with insufficient contactor size or engagement.

As someone who works with LV electrical installations, there are a couple interesting finds: 1. Turning off the an individual breaker doesn’t mean it’s safe to touch the parts (unless it’s a 2 pole breaker) because return currents from the neutral can still shock you (since the neutral is unswitched in a single pole breaker). 2. The GFCI that took more than 5mA is a fail if it is rated at 5mA. In the UK for instance, 30mA RCD trips around 22-27mA, and if it trips at more than 30mA, it would have to be replaced. However the accuracy and precision of your homemade GFCI/RCD ramp tester may not make it very suitable for the mA range. 3. When there was a dead short between the line and earth conductor, the breaker at the fuse board should have popped. Maybe the earthing there wasn’t very good. Great content as always :)

8:40 I recently saved my house from burning down by discovering an outlet that was so hot that it literally burned my finger with first degree burns (like a sunburn) when i touched the screw to remove the cover plate. the wires inside were completely corroded and stiff. I measured the temperature of the faceplate (the plastic covering) at 131 F. pretty scary

We had that in a JB feeding a transformer caused by a Floating neutral because the X0 point was not grounded. Only reason it didnt catch fire was because the splitter in the CSO trailer blew up and it prompted him to ask us to take a look was hot enough we could see the heat radiating off the box and we took the temp and it was 180 degrees. Not only that even with the breaker off the neutral was still live and gave a nice arc flash when we cut into it. That saved four 6 story wood frame Condos from going up in flames (again since it already burned down once from the roofers)

@@SeamonVB Lol, and you even missed the _actual_ contraction typo in there : it should be "[...] it feels like *you're* part of the problem". FWIW though, the "it's vs. its" one can be kinda confusing, I have to look that one up myself just to be sure sometimes! I think it's because if you were to go purely by the rules, you'd think that they might _both_ be "it's", with one of the 's indicating possession, and one indicating a contraction. But since that'd be super confusing, we don't do that (and also there are often special rules for pronouns, such as "his" and "hers" instead of "he's" and "she's" to indicate possession, as that would cause the same ambiguity as before)

You can find it too if you look. You dont even have to look hard. Like where I used to work. They converted their outdoor lighting from 240V sodium (I think) to 120V LED. In the breaker box, they took out the double pole breaker and put in a single pole, which is fine, but they connected both hot wires to the same screw. And at the other end, they just put a wire nut on the end of the unused wire. So now, theres a live wire in the wall with probably nothing covering it because I'm sure the wire nut came off

I am not an electrician, but I worked as maintenance lead at a location for a hotel chain that shall remain unnamed. Due to knowing an electrician who helped with a remodeling project I am aware of some of the electrical code in my area... The amount of... wonderful electrical work that I found in that hotel when I started was astounding. And I am sure if I was a fully trained electrician I would have found even more things to make my skin crawl.

It’s not really amazing, bad electric stuff is really everywhere. In my hotel in Curacao they had a splice on kids reach height with live conductors, if you had something like a small tea spoon you could toast yourself. In my own house in Belgium they didnt even bother to put in the screws in a powerpoint to clamp the wires, they just let it hang under mechanical tension..
